How does Google Serve the correct language version?
-
Hi guys,
I'm currently working on a multi lingual .eu website with 20 lanuages which has been live now for a month now.
Its is a sub directory set up so the french language version would look something like www.example.eu/fr. The English language version defaults to the home page www.example.eu.
When you search for the brand name on the local search engines the home page English version appears instead of the preferred language version for each Country.
90% of the external links so far link to the homepage so I'm guessing this is the reason why.
We are still waiting for the development company to create sitemap for each language using the rel=”alternate” hreflang=”x” XML Sitemap Tool.
I know Google look at a number of factors when deciding what results to give a user.
Can anybody share their experience or advice here?
Thanks
Rob

Super, Thanks Gianluca for the spot.

The URLs must be absolute, not relative
href="http:www.domain.com/fr/" and not href="/fr/"
-
Hi Gianluca,
I have instructed the developers to insert this mark-up into the site now. Would you mind having a quick look to see if its now correct?
If you look at the lines 124 to 147 in the source code the tag looks like it is set-up for each country.

In your case you first must have clear what are your objectives.
In fact, if you are aiming to target all the french speaking persons independently of where they are (as in your hipothesis), then you should not geotarget your subfolders at all, but rely on the hreflang mark up:
-
Thanks Gianluca.
Yeah we implemented cross site hreflang tags on the US site also.
I thought the site strength / DA would be the issue as the US site has been established much longer. It has a 42 DA compared to the EU 30.
Getting the EU DA to 'overtake' the US in order to outrank it in the UK (and other EU countries) seems like a longer process though. It is a shame there is nothing else we can do to resolve this quicker really.
-
Mmm... the US tld is a country level one, hence it geotarget automatically the USA.
In your case may seem that it outrank the EU one in UK because of its stronger DA and link profile.
Said that: did you implemented the hreflang also in the US site, so to tell Google that users from UK should not see the .us Urls but the .eu english ones? Hreflang works crossdomain too, remember.
-
Hi Gianluca,
What if the site is a multi-lingual site (sub folder) and I submit the French language version to webmaster tools www.example.eu/fr and target it to France, add the French language site map also. What happens to the French version of the site if somebody's searches the belgian search engine for the brand or keywords related as they speak French as well?
-
Thanks Gianluca, I have done that too with the EU domain to all the specific countries.
One quick question though. There is a separate US domain (the original domain of the country) which outranks the EU domain in the UK on nearly all occasions.
Apart from the rel="alternate" hreflang="x" tag what can we do with the US domain to ensure the EU domain ranks in EU countries?
-
If you targeting a country, then you should also geotarget each subfolder to its corresponding country in Google Webmaster Tools.
-
Hi Rob,
This is a tricky subject and I have a client with a similar issue.
We added the rel="alternate" hreflang="x" tag in the head section as suggested here http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=189077 but the results are not conclusive as yet.
I would be keen to hear other peoples thought on this subject too.

Correct Hreflang & Canonical Tags for Multi-Regional Website English Language Only having URL Parameters
Dear friends, We have a multi-regional website in English language only having the country selector on the top of each page and it adds countrycode parameters on each url. Website is built in Magento 1.8 and having 1 store with multiple store views. There is no default store set in Magento as I discussed with developer. Content is same for all the countries and only currency is changed. In navigation there are urls without url parameters but when we change store from any page it add parameters in the url for same page hence there are total 7 URLs. 6 URLs for each page (with country parameters) and 1 master url (without parameters) and making content duplicity. We have implemented hreflang tags on each page with url parameters but for canonical we have implemented master page url as per navigation without url parameters Example on this page. I think this is correct for master page but we should use URL parameters in canonical tags for each counry url too and there should be only 1 canonical tag on each country page url. Currently all the country urls are having master page canoncial tag as per the example. Please correct me if I am wrong and **in this case what has to be done for master page? **as google is indexing the pages without parameters too. We are also using GEOIP redirection for each store with country IP detection and for rest of the countries which are not listed on the website we are redirecting to USA store. Earlier it was 301 but we changed it to 302. Hreflang tags are showing errors in SEMRush due to redirection but in GWT it's OK for some pages it's showing no return tags only. Should I use **x-default tags for hreflang and country selector only on home page like this or should I remove the redirection? **However some of the website like this using redirection but header check tool doesn't show the redirection for this and for our website it shows 302 redirection. Sorry for the long post but looking for your support, please.

Google Analytics - whats best way to set up to track users on geotargeted sub folders & tlds ?
Hi ive got a client site just about to launch into 2 new territories (German Germany & Turkish Turkey) The existing/main site is in English & targets English keyword usage globally via domain.com and is not geotargeted in anyway. Analytics is set up for this on domain.com and tracking accurately and GWT is set up too. Now we have added a Turkish language site via a subfolder (domain.com/tr/) & the German site (domsain.com/de/) BUT this German subfolder will be domain mapped to a TLD (domain.de) eventually.. So what's best way to configure/set up Google Analytics to track users so can view the international sub-sites as individual sites etc ? (& GWT for that matter) ? Also after doing this i will be setting up in Moz Anlytics as separate campaigns so how do you set up so only draws in the Analytics data specific to these sub-folders ? All Best Dan

Does Google's algorithm work the same in every country?
I can't help but feel this is a silly question! but does Google algorithm work exactly the same throughout all countries? I run a few sites in the UK and a couple in Spain but can't help but feel that my Spanish sites are harder to rank for. The sites that rank the best are business directories in Spain... whereas here in the UK you'd be lucky to find one on page one..

Why don't our English versions show up first?
If I google "greatfire" I find the Chinese version of our website (zh.greatfire.org) before the English version (en.greatfire.org). This is not on the Chinese-language version of Google. Why is this? Our site even has a language indicator () and also hints of where the English version is (). The same thing happens if I google "freeweibo". I find https://freeweibo.com but not https://freeweibo.com/en/, even though we indicate that's the English version (). Any ideas?

Google US vs Google UK
I could have posted this somewhere else, but I cannot find it. So, I have keywords that rank well in Google US and many that do well in Google UK too. I thought all of my keywords ranking well in the US would also rank well the UK. I have figured out today that it is not the case. Why would I rank in the top 3 in the US and not even show up in the top 50 in the UK? It is very strange. Thanks for your help! I am not super new to SEO or web business. I have had a very good company that has been ranking well since 2004.

How do you see Google results specific to location?
We run a Canadian website and are interested in seeing what SERPs look like from specific postal codes. Is there any way to manipulate Google to think our IP address comes from another location? Thanks!
