Local Listing Directories value
-
Hello fellow mozzers,
I would like to start a discussion on whether certain local listing directories are worth it.
Most people are of course familiar with Google+ Local(Google Places), Yahoo Local, Bing Local, Yelp, Hotfrog etcetera..
I know there are a lot more of these big local listing directories.
I am situated in Holland and we have a lot of small local listing directories.
Some of these directories are not really good quality. For example:
http://dordrecht.cylex-bedrijvengids.nl/bedrijf/pizza-presto-dordrecht-12014914.htmlThis domain is filled with ads in prominent locations. They have a domain authority of 44 and as far as i can tell there are close to 0 reviews on companies. (So not a very active community).
When you perform SEO for a local business you want the business to be found in the local search results. Google goes around the web to see if the business information (contact and address information, website etcetera) is consistent on different local listing directories. The links from the directories are still links and therefor they pass a certain amount of PageRank.
How much value do you think local listing directories such as the links i will provide below will add to a business? Do you think it is worth the time to find these small directory sites and fill in information about the business there or is your time better spent on other SEO activities?
I would love to hear your input on this subject

Don't forget that I am from Holland and that a lot of the American directories do not work for for Holland. But thank you for the advice.

I would direct submit to all the biggies and then submit through LocalEZE (now Nuestar (sp?)) for the lesser directories. Chris ^ is exactly right, there's diminishing returns on spending the 5-10 min to claim your listings on every directory and if you look at the David Mihm infographic that Chris shared you'll see that LocalEZE feeds most of the lesser known directories. That's what I've been doing for my clients for years and it works well.

It depends on what you are trying to get out of it.
If you are using local directories to improve your SEO and inbound link profile, then no - I don't think they are worth the time.
If you are using local directories to get your brand in front of potential customers, then yes, it is definitely worth your time.

I know what Local SEO can do for your business:)
My question is however whether the small local listing directories are worth spending time and effort on.The reason i'm asking this is that i got a discussion with some quite recently on the subject of how important the smaller local listing directories are towards your ranking in both the normal search results and in the local search results.

Local directories will help you with expanding your reach for local search. Having a listing on Google Places, Bing, Yahoo, Yelp, FourSquare, etc., will get your brand in front of potential customers faces. Isn't this the ultimate goal? Whether or not this helps you rank in search engines, you still want to turn leads into sales.
If you are looking at local directories as your sole source of inbound links to improve your SEO, you should probably look elsewhere, but if your interested in getting your brand out there for people to see, local directories are essential.

Well, once you get down to the point where it's not worth the time and effort, you kind of start spitting hairs but for the majority of those little directories, I'd say even the IP diversity factor is of little or no value--and that wouldn't really be of help in local search anyway. When you see a local site that might be of value to your local results, it's going to stand out from from garbage directories and such.

Thank you for responding
So if i understand your answer correctly. You think that the smaller local listing directories are not worth the time and effort or they do not provide any benefit at all?
-
As far as directories that are typically of primary value to local search, I'd stick with David Mihm's local search ecosystem. Outside of those, you might do searches for the [name, telephone number] of the top listed local results to get a feel for their local citations. Sites that provide overlapping citations to the highest-listed local results should be at the top of the priority list to check out.

How important is a high listing score in getlisted.org?
I checked Moz out on getlisted and found a score of 28%. I believe this is telling me that Moz does not consider this an important piece(getlisted.org) to a local marketing strategy. Also(as you can see in the image) getlisted shows missing listings when the listings are actually with these directory providers. (Not just Moz, but other companies I do local marketing for.) Plus I've noticed that at the bottom of the page the "unable to contact", Bing has been there for a long time. Is this going to be fixed? My clients know about getlisted.org and they are looking to me for answers on how to get them a higher listing score. Is this a tool that can assist in showing clients how well their listings are showing in local marketing or not? moz-getlisted.jpg

A lot of local SEO questions from a newbie...
I've been doing basic SEO for customers for quite awhile now in terms of on-page stuff, but am starting to move into the arena of local SEO services and had a few questions that I hoped you guys could help with. 1. What services besides Google+ Local do you list customers websites in, such as Yahoo or Bing Local? 2. When creating accounts at the services listed question #1, do you have to verify the phone number that's listed with the business owner or is there any extra type of verification needed? How do you deal with getting all that verified for the company? 3. Do you create all these listings at Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. from the same account? 4. Does anyone know of a list of the top 50 places to get local citations such as Yelp or YellowPages? 5. When creating citations do you normally have to verify the phone number or address that you list and how do you deal with that with business owners? 6. Do you use the same accounts to create all the local citations or are different ones required for each listing? 7. What companies would you recommend that handle all the above for you, such as a setting up accounts at Google, Yahoo, and Bing - and then also creating around 50 citations for you? Of course all the login information would also need to be provided for everything they create. Thanks for taking the time to read this post, I look forward to hearing back from all of you!

Off-Page Local SEO for a Home-Based Businesses?
What are some ideas for optimizing for off-page local SEO when you're working with home-based businesses that don't necessarily want to share their physical address, and using a PO box is not an option for major local SEO directories?

Google Local Listings dropped in all major keywords
One of our websites had dropped dramatically in all of his major keywords over the past several days. He was ranked in the maps section in google (the old pages not the google plus pages) in the top 3 in his most important keywords and all of a sudden they dropped off the first page completely - not just down one or 2 places. Not sure what happened and how to fix it.. help please!!!

Does anyone have experience with ecinity.com as a vehicle for populating local search directories? If yes, how would you rank it as a competitor to Localeze and UBL?
I've been approached by the company to use their tool. It has functionality beyond just populating local data sources which I'm not concerned with. I just want to know how it ranks in terms of local directory coverage. They claim 85% of the local directories will be populated.

Is a listing in this directory really worth $365/year??
Recently i noticed one of our competitors is getting a citation out of a directory called Refer Links. I contacted them to find out their pricing, and to be listed in that directory it is $365/year. I noticed that all the links to the websites are cloaked with php redirects and rel=nofollows' so i doubt it would do much for our page rank, so strictly from a citation standpoint, is this worth it? Here is our competitors listing: http://www.referlinks.com/listing/all-canadian-self-storage-inc--mobile-self-storage.html
