Are all duplicate content issues bad? (Blog article Tags)
-
If so how bad?
We use tags on our blog and this causes duplicate content issues.
We don't use wordpress but with such a highly used cms having the same issue it seems quite plausible that Google would be smart enough to deal with duplicate content issues caused by blog article tags and not penalise at all.
Here it has been discussed and I'm ready to remove tags from our blog articles or monitor them closely to see how it effects our rankings.
Before I do, can you give me some advice around this?
Thanks,
Daniel. -
Thanks David, at this stage I have set up site to no index follow tag pages. Thanks for blog usability feedback. Related posts is next on the list of to do for the blog.

I don't think standard tags get used much by visitors. Related posts, especially if acompanied by thumbnail images, perform much better in my experience.

Ok thanks guys, at this stage I think this is the way I'll go or as David says just use them to organise content and not display them.
Has anyone else found anything out there, articles, videos, anything on Moz that says Google is smart enough to deal with this so it is a non issue.
Also any thoughts on how important blog tags are these days for usability?

Agree 100% with David and Fredrico. Noindex, follow your tag pages.

Had the same issue myself, constant duplicate content reported on tag pages as sometimes some tag could have the same content on a page (while paginated).
We decided to no-index the tag pages, not only for the duplicate content issue, but also, they do not provide any extra to search engines, they are intended for users, then why have search engines indexing them? We added a no-index but NOT a nofollow as we WANT the pages they link to to be indexed (posts).
Sure, we lost about 7K indexed pages, but now those that remain are actually then ones that deserve to be there.
I'm with David on this one.

If you're using tags internally to help organise content, you could just stop them from appearing on the front end of the site.
The alternative is to keep them on the front end, but to no-index the tag pages.

Re-direct Irrelevant (high ranking) blog articles?
One of our sites has some old & completely irrelvant blog articles that are high ranking & receive the top two visited pages for the entire site (more page views than the homepage even). Our marketing managers are wanting to take down the blog posts since they are falsely inflating their traffic numbers with irrelevant visitors. I'm concerned by taking them down and re-directing to another site it will affect our overall domain authority and rankings for relevant keywords. Thoughts and/or resources on taking down vs. keeping up?

Duplicate Content For Product Alternative listing
Hi I have a tricky one here. cloudswave is a directory of products and we are launching new pages called Alternatives to Product X This page displays 10 products that are an alternative to product X (Page A) Lets say now you want to have the alternatives to a similar product within the same industry, product Y (Page B), you will have 10 product alternatives, but this page will be almost identical to Page A as the products are in similar and in the same industry. Maybe one to two products will differ in the 2 listings. Now even SEO tags are different, aren't those two pages considered duplicate content? What are your suggestions to avoid this problem? thank you guys

Duplicate Page Content / Titles Help
Hi guys, My SEOmoz crawl diagnostics throw up thousands of Dup Page Content / Title errors which are mostly from the forum attached to my website. In-particular it's the forum user's profiles that are causing the issue, below is a sample of the URLs that are being penalised: http://www.mywebsite.com/subfolder/myforum/pop_profile.asp?mode=display&id=1308 I thought that by adding - http://www.mywebsite.com/subfolder/myforum/pop_profile.asp to my robots.txt file under 'Ignore' would cause the bots to overlook the thousands of profile pages but the latest SEOmoz crawl still picks them up. My question is, how can I get the bots to ignore these profile pages (they don't contain any useful content) and how much will this be affecting my rankings (bearing in mind I have thousands of errors for dup content and dup page titles). Thanks guys Gareth

Duplicate page content and Duplicate page title errors
Hi, I'm new to SeoMoz and to this forum. I've started a new campaign on my site and got back loads of error. Most of them are Duplicate page content and Duplicate page title errors. I know I have some duplicate titles but I don't have any duplicate content. I'm not a web developer and not so expert but I have the impression that the crawler is following all my internal links (Infact I have also plenty of warnings saying "Too many on-page links". Do you think this is the cause of my errors? Should I implement the nofollow on all internal links? I'm working with Joomla. Thanks a lot for your help Marco

Duplicate Content | eBay
My client is generating templates for his eBay template based on content he has on his eCommerce platform. I'm 100% sure this will cause duplicate content issues. My question is this.. and I'm not sure where eBay policy stands with this but adding the canonical tag to the template.. will this work if it's coming from a different page i.e. eBay? Update: I'm not finding any information regarding this on the eBay policy's: http://ocs.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?CustomerSupport&action=0&searchstring=canonical So it does look like I can have rel="canonical" tag in custom eBay templates but I'm concern this can be considered: "cheating" since rel="canonical is actually a 301 but as this says: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/12/handling-legitimate-cross-domain.html it's legitimately duplicate content. The question is now: should I add it or not? UPDATE seems eBay templates are embedded in a iframe but the snap shot on google actually shows the template. This makes me wonder how they are handling iframes now. looking at http://www.webmaster-toolkit.com/search-engine-simulator.shtml does shows the content inside the iframe. Interesting. Anyone else have feedback?
