Preparing a DotNetNuke Active Forums site for SEO push
-
I'm in the process of buying and running an existing forum that is running on DotNetNuke 5.2.0 and Active Fours 4.1. As part of the transfer, I'm asking that the site be upgraded to the latest version of DNN and AF 4.3. AF 4.3 has SEO-friendly URLs instead of the current long, ugly default URLs, and I'm looking forward to implementing that feature.
My specific question is:
What would you do to prepare for this upgrade in terms of the content, especially related to the URL changes?
I've gone into Google Analytics and downloaded content by page title, exported the first 1000 results, and put those titles into Word and corrected spelling errors in the title so URLs will be based on correct spellings.
General background:
- The site is not currently monetized, and there will not be an initial focus on monetization and likely only smaller efforts (affiliate Amazon links in a resource section) in the future.
- The site is free for users.
- I'm fine with taking a hit in organic traffic in the short term. About 1/3 of the traffic is from search engines right now, and less than 30% of the visitors are new visits.
- The site is going to continue much the same as it has until now. Same moderators, same purpose, same skin, etc.
- I have access to GA, site is verified in GWT, need to verify in Bing, and I do have root access to the server.
- I've already started working on image file sizes, both of user-submitted images and site-related images like the header.
- Until now, I have no experience with DNN or AF or any of the extensions (and am appalled at the price and lack of features of some of those extensions, compared to what I'm used to for WordPress).
More general questions:
In terms of SEO, I'm intending to treat the upgrade of the forum with the friendly URLs as a re-launch. I'm wanting good URLs, put in a site map, fix non-www to www, etc. When I start making the changes and submitting the site map and generally drawing Google's attention, I want Google to like what it sees, and have as much optimized as possible when googlebot comes around. My goal is to draw more targeted visitors from search that are interested in the content in the site.
What other suggestions do you have for the site prep, both from being a forum in general and specifically on DNN/AF?
I'm not putting the URL out just yet, as we haven't announced to the users the change of ownership is taking place.
Thanks everyone!

We've announced the transition, so I can post the URL here. It's http://rcnavalcombat.com/.
We're running out of HDD space on the current virtual server, so I'm shopping for a larger package, and will be setting up the new server with the latest in DNN and AF, tweaking things the way I want, and importing the existing site (and rinse and repeat about five times to get bugs worked out I imagine) then going live with the upgrades on the new server.

I haven't done so, I have only user end experience with this. However, I think that would be a good idea to do so, especially if the topic is a good one or receives several replies. A small update to the policies should clear the way to allow this.
I cannot recommend many modules, but I can say buyer beware. I would stay with DNN features like http://www.snowcovered.com/snowcovered2/Default.aspx?tabid=242&PackageID=18835. Using others can crash your system, remove data tables or just plain out not work as described and you may end up spending more money to hire that company to trouble shoot their own product.

I've used that sitemap strategy before (a separate sitemap for the different major areas of the site) and had good success with that. I'm going through GA and taking a look at the pages with the most visits and making sure those pages don't have glaring errors for a human or bot visitor, such as missing/mis-sized images, horrid misspellings, etc.
Do you have any advice regarding modules to use or avoid?
More of a general forum question than a DNN question, I'm wondering what the schools of thought regarding changing or cleaning up thread titles are. Do you ever go back and make things more clear, such as changing "a noob question" to "a noob question about [subject]", or standardize thread titles (in a product review section for example).
Does anyone have resources or forums where forum managers can go to answer this type of question (about any changes made to UGC)? I'm wondering where other forum mods hang out.

I run our sites on DNN and am going through this same transition. I have decided that based on the conversion Rand had with the head Binger and the Mozinar about Sitemaps, I am going to create a few of them, each based around a specific category, i.e. Services.xml.
This, from my understanding, will allow me to monitor which pages of each sitemap has been indexed and try to help out those that haven't yet been crawled. Then I will keep a sitemap of the sitemaps. With all that being said make sure the sitemap is free from errors, DNN default tabid urls and contains your best of pages.
I think as a forum, this can be great for you if your primary topics contain several ongoing subtopic that gain a lot of attention. Your first steps of capturing what you have already seem to be spot on. Let us know how this works out.

Entities and SEO
How do you find the correct words (entities) to explain an entity ? The words (entities) that go together within a sentence seem to be based on the specific corpus (the keyword you want to rank ) and when they are million of results it seems impossible to find what word / entity is going to explain the entity / concept I want to explain. It seems that I got a better chance at the lottery 🙂 a

Redirecting an Entire Site to a Page on Another Site?
So I have a site that I want to shut down http://vowrenewalsmaui.com and redirect to a dedicated Vow Renewals page I am making on this site here: https://simplemauiwedding.net. My main question is: I don't want to lose all the authority of the pages and if I just redirect the site using my domain registrar's 301 redirect it will only redirect the main URL not all of the supporting pages, to my knowledge. How do I not lose all the authority of the supporting pages and still shut down the site and close down my site builder? I know if I leave the site up I can redirect all of the individual pages to corresponding pages on the other site, but I want to be done with it. Just trying to figure out if there is a better way than I know of. The domain is hosted through GoDaddy.

Site Redesign Performance
Hi, I am looking for a bit of advice if possible. In October 2018 we did a site redesign for a website that we had acquired (www.drainageonline.co.uk) but we have lost SO much organic traffic since Oct (-40/50% each month). I have amended any crawl errors including broken redirects ensuring all 301's that we put in place are working correctly, ensured 404 pages working OK, implemented canonical onto all pages along with other bits but we don't really seem to be seeing any improvements in our organic traffic. Can anyone offer any advice on the above? Thanks, Lea

Site migration/ CMS/domain site structure change-no access to search console
Hi everyone, We are migrating an old site under a bigger umbrella (our main domain). As mentioned in the title, We'll perform CMS migration, domain change, and site structure change. Now, the major problem is that we can't get into google search console for the old site. The site still has old GA code, so google search console verification using this method is not possible, also there is no way developers will be able to add GTM or edit DNS setting (not to bother you with the reason why). Now, my dilemma is : 1. Do we need access to old search console to notify Google about the domain name change or this could be done from our main site (old site will become a part of) search console 2. We are setting up 301 redirects from old to the new domain (not perfect 1:1 redirect ). Once migration is done does anything else needs to be done with the old domain (it will become obsolete)? 3.The main site, Site-map... Should I create a new sitemap with newly added pages or update the current one. 4. if you have anything else please add:) Thank you!

Few question about SEO
HI guys, I have few questions and I always find good answer here. I tried many SEO companies some very expensive and well known some with medium prices and some from India. I’m not an SEO expert but I always get the same things from SEO companies. They're saying you have to stay with us for few months before you’ll see any results. I completely understand however I don’t see the result on the end.1. What exactly Do I need SEO company for, after I do on page optimisation if they don’t work on proper backlinks. Just letting you know I’m getting content from other people.2. Is there something else which is really important after your page is optimised than backlinks? Or we should fully focus on get backlinks from customers, guest post, sharing on social media etc. to increase our DA and PA?3. Any advice about some individual or company who is good in backlink services?

Does subdomain hurt SEO on main site
This client sells event management software and puts all their clients on different subdomains of their main domain. Looking in SEO tools like OSE, when I run a backlink analysis, it pulls up all the backlinks to the subdomains as well as those for the main domain. In webmaster tools when I look at queries, impressions and clicks, they get at least 30 times more traffic and impressions on keywords found in their subdomains and very few on their own. In other words, all these tools are providing a collective analysis of main domain and all subdomains. All the backlinks and keywords recorded for those subdomains are not at all relevent to the keywords they want to rank for. For example, their software supports Boy Scouts, so keywords they rank for according to WT include merit badge, scout camp, etc., but of course, that's on the subdomain. As a result, if you were to take a snapshot of their online presence as these tools do, you would think they were a boy scout website and not a software developer if you include the subdomain, along with its PR, backlinks, keywords, etc. So the question I have is, does Google connect all these subdomains with the main domain and then water down the main site with irrelevant keywords, content and backlinks? Or does Google see all those subdomains as completely separate and we don't need to worry or move their clients off their subdomain? I'm worried about Google assigning a "boy scout" relevancy to them. Am I wrong? What would you do?

Redirecting Pages from site A to site B
Hi, I have a client who have a solid, high ranking content based site (site A). They have now created an ecommerce site in addition (site B). To give site B a boost in terms of search engine visibility upon launch, they now wish to redirect approx 90% of site As pages to site B. What would be the implications of this? Apart from customers being automatically redirected from the page they thought they where landing on, how would google now view site A? What are your thoughts to thier idea. I am trying to talk them out of it as I think its a poor one.
