Should I remove our videos from DotSub.com to try & boost our Wistia videos?
-
Okay all you video SEO lovers, I had a thought today that I thought would make an interesting question.
I have been using the tools at DotSub.com to transcribe our videos. The tools are great, and even better, free. We have about 80 videos on DotSub and all of these videos are also on our YouTube channel. Once I've completed the transcription, I've been exporting the .srt file and uploading them to YouTube to replace the God-awful machine transcriptions (sorry Google, but they are baaaadddd).
Anyway, sometimes our DotSub video will outrank the same YouTube video, sometimes not. The 80 videos on DotSub have amassed about 10,000 views and a couple of translations...which is nice, I guess?
Recently, we've begun experimenting with Wistia. Here is a search term for which our YouTube and DotSub video results pretty much flood page 1: "studiolive webinar"
All of the DotSub videos also exist as Wistia videos on our Website and blog. For obvious reasons, we would rather have our Wistia videos rank in those three positions which right now are dominated by the DotSub versions.
Should I remove the content from DotSub in order to try to get the Wistia videos to rank instead? Or should I leave them all there? I should probably add that we do have Wistia videos that are outranking both Dotsub and Youtube versions of the exact same videos...so I know that's possible. I'm just wondering if by leaving all of these videos up at DotSub if we are cannibalizing our potential at ranking for videos that link back to our site?
What do you think?

Hey Dana,
I'd answer this question... with a question, which is "where are your audience?".
Syndication across platforms is only going to be valuable in so much as it reaches more of your target audience and so I'd suggest starting with working out who they are and where they hangout.
My perception is that you're going to hit the point of diminishing returns pretty quickly after you cover off YouTube, Vimeo and potentially Daily Motion (if you're accepted), but for your niche, there may well be other sites which have a concentrated pocket of your target audience.
I'd ignore the list of sites you linked to altogether, as I think it's completely wrong. They seem to have confused "highest traffic" with PageRank and then lump hosting platforms (which don't display user submitted content on their sites) into the mix.
Cheers,
Phil

Hi Christy,
I think the jury's still out. The original intention was to syndicate our videos across as many channels as possible. Given that we aren't going to hire an agency to do it, the submission process comes down to me, and honestly, I still haven't finished submitting all 140+ of our videos just to DotSub.com alone, let alone the other possibilities on this list.
I am thinking maybe I didn't ask the question the right way around and perhaps I should start a new question like "What are the benefits, if any, of syndicating your video content across as many free video channels as possible if your goal in creating videos is solely brand awareness?"
In other words, our videos weren't created to gain links. They were created to gain eyeballs and awareness. That being the case, wouldn't it be better to upload as many as possible to as many placed as possible, especially if it doesn't cost us anything more than the time it takes me to do the submissions?
Thoughts?

Did this answer your question, Dana?
-
Hey Dana,
Basically - I think you need to test this and test it again to find the solution :).
The DotSub content is essentially behaving in exactly the same way as the YouTube versions of your video - that is ranking well but driving traffic to a siloed page with just the video on and no way to drive further conversions. Given that the tutorial style of the content isn't very sales focused, I wouldn't be too concerned about that, but since you're splitting traffic between DotSub and YouTube - you're not doing all in your power to optimise your YouTube channel. Should you move just to Wistia and YouTube? - I think that really depends what you're trying to achieve with the videos. Currently I don't feel like they're amazing direct sales tools, so I wonder how much ranking your own domain for the terms in questions matters a great deal to the bottom financial line? The only way to really know that will be to test it rigorously.
You'll certainly be cannibalising direct traffic unless you choose just one channel, but really I think the question boils down far more to "what will be the best use of these videos?"
Cheers,
Phil.

Hi Dana,
I agree I think you should get as many people as possible to weigh in on this. It's an important issue and I would be very happy to see more people away and is well with their opinions or what they've learned in the field I think this is a very important topic to a lot of people and should get quite a bit of attention. Hope you're doing well
Sincerely,
Thomas

Thanks Thomas!
Okay, so I have one vote to take them down.
Interested to hear from others who have an opinion on whether they should stay or should they go?

hi Dana,
I would have to say that having your videos up on similar public systems like YouTube Dot.stub along with mimeo it unless you're running professional and not allowing it for public use.
Unfortunately, that will give all ranking of your video to whatever public hosting provider you have chosen. Because knew it most likely not want to compete with them I would take them down however before doing so I would console with Phil at distilled he knows his stuff especially about videos and I'm sure he'd be happy to help.

Wistia Is a fantastic tool will allow you to rank very high and but you don't want to compete for your own videos and the fact that you have the ability to take them down makes it an easy choice. I would take them down.

I believe this to be an excellent guide for your choice.

Wistia also offers a fantastic transcription service with 24 hour turnaround
I hope I have been of help,
Thomas

Changing domain name, witch is better - brand name.com vs keyword + brand name.com?
Hi, I just made one decision and now I'm bit worried, if I did right one. I hope that you can give me feedback and advice regarding it. I'm in hookah market, so I do not have any possibilities to buy adds, so SEO is really-really important to us. I know a lot of things what has to be done to perform better, but currently I have just few really important questions. In international market the main keyword is "hookah" and everything related to that. We are small company and our brand is not that well known and do not have high volume traffic on website. Hookah in front of that we tough will give better understanding to audience about what is the page. Which domain name is better for SEO and also branding purposes? Currently we were using the first one without keyword, no we switched to the second one (just about week ago). https://hekkpipe.com https://hookahhekkpipe.com Regarding it, some really important questions: Would the longer version of domain helps us better rank with important keywords to us or not? When we will write good content, which domain is more likely shared? I'm bit afraid that first one and that we made a mistake changing the domain name. When the 1st one, then how big difference does it potentially make? Thank you

Is there any value in trying to add a page to wikipedia
Hi Mozzers, My manager has asked me this question and I'm not quite sure how to answer it. "Is there any value in trying to add a page about our company to wikipedia" I would have thought it's very difficult to get a page to stick in wikipedia if it's about a company that isn't huge (like Apple or Google). Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Personally I think it's potentially quite risky and unlikely to bring much traffic (because I can't imagine anyone would visit a page on wiki about my company - not that my company isn't great, because it is, it's just not HUGE or global...) I think a wiki page could be a bit spammy! Would welcome your input, and I am happy to be proven wrong! Thanks, Amelia

Enigma of Google & China - Can you solve it?
In March, my team in Shanghai launched a site redesign of our English language website (targeted at expats in China) which: Changed the URL's to be more SEO friendly (keyword based, shorter, etc) Implemented endless scrolling to replace previous pagination Changed some front end layouts Changed page title and meta description tags to use keywords, be unique, use correct lengths Since then, we see in Google Analytics, traffic form Google organic branded search terms has been steadily dropping (between 5 - 20% depending on the term). Not provided is down 2%. We do not rank for many non-branded terms, so have no statistical significance there. However in Google Webmaster Tools, impressions of branded queries are also down, along with non-branded search terms (including those we tried to optimise for). We see similar traffic drops from other search engines as well (Bing, Baidu) but not at as high a level (only 3% or so). We have not changed any other marketing strategy online or offline. We have tested / done: 1. Changing title tags 2. Reverting to old pagination (as we say in GWT a drop in indexed pages) 3. Checked the tracking code is working 4. Checked our rankings (we still rank position 1 for our branded queries and even some non branded) 5. Submitted new XML site map The only large issue we could find is that from that day there were over 300,000 page not found 404 errors (which we are now redirecting by 301s as Google shows them to us, and have been doing so for 2 weeks). Nothing is helping us so far, organic traffic continues to drop week on week, so I am reaching out to the Moz community. Can anybody think of a reason for such a dramatic drop? Please help!

Showing up in Related Videos on Youtube
I notice that that on YouTube, the related links that show up at the end of our videos are a smorgasbord of our competitors and other videos similar in theme (which makes sense, as those are truly related videos). What I'm curious about -- and have had difficult finding, is tips and case studies for improving and maintaining appearance in the related video sections, and perhaps some insight into how those videos are rated for for related videos. Correlation on YouTube seems to be spotty at best, I know keywords and user metrics are key, but any more specific advice or clarification on the issue would be appreciated.

Moving Blog from www.topic.domain.com to www.domain.com/blog
Hi Fellow Mozzers, Just started off here on seomoz.org and am super happy to have joined the community! I've recently started a new job as web optimization manager for an education company. There is a lot to do and one of my first tasks is to figure a better strategy for our current blog. I've convinced our management to move our blog from topic.domain.com to domain.com/blog. My research has shown that this is a better strategy so that our blog can receive the DA of our root domain, get more people to click through our site, and even receive more natural searches (PLEASE, someone correct me if I'm wrong on this). Anyway, our blog is currently hosted as a Wordpress blog and we're wondering if it's more worthwhile to build a blog platform ourselves or continue using Wordpress. I am not a technical guy and don't know the backend stuff to make it happen, but my concern is primarily for the optimum search capacity. Also, our bloggers frequently put links to different portions of our website - does this hold any negative SEO value in terms of too much internal linking? I personally wouldn't assume so, but then again I could be wrong. Finally, we also track our main website using Google Analytics- currently, the only tracking we have installed on our blogs is the default provided by Wordpress (yes yes I know, but that's why i'm here -- to fix these weaknesses). I'm assuming we will be able to better track using GA when the switch is made. So, I guess my questions are: (1) Is my research correct in that it's better to have our blog hosted as domain.com/blog over topic.domain.com (2) Are there any best practices in making this switch and/or any negative implications with continuing to use Wordpress or should we build our own platform (we have the internal resources to do so, but would prefer to take the easiest and best route in terms of SEO and community building). (3) Will it still be just as easy to track using GA. Thank you!! Pedram

Trying to decide on best domain
I am trying to decide on a domain for a real estate site in Utah where the area code is 801. My choices are utahhomes801.com, the search term "utah homes" get 3600 exact matches, utahrealestate801.com with "utah real estate" getting 22,200 exact matches or forget the 801 and go for a shorter domain Utahnow.net or utahhomeboy.com. Is there any reason to stay away from 801 in the domain? Any thought or direction would be appreciated. Scott

Video's Pros and Cons - YouTube vs My website or both?
This isn't really a question per say, but more of a request for advise. We are in the process of creating videos for our travel website. They are more informational and do not promote any products as such. I am aware of the options, and I am leaning towards creating a pro account with Vimeo so that the videos are available only on our website. The reason for this is so that we can at least get credit for our work, as when they are on you tube, anybody can syndicate the video without linking to our website. I am also aware that there are allot of searches happening on YouTube, and it may be worse if we choose not to upload our videos there as we would loose out on a big audience. it would be GREAT if we had the best of both options. And i had an idea i want to get your opinions on. Create the video and upload onto our website with "lower competitive" title / meta / body. Submit the video on YouTube with a "Higher competitive" keyword / title /meta and description. When someone finds our video, they might search YouTube to avoid linking back and wont find it, (although it is there getting traffic from a similar keyword) Branding is the number 1 objective for these videos, so you tube + many other video sites would be the way to go. However, i would also like our own "private" video blog on our site so that if web masters like the video, we can give them the option of embedding it on there site (like SEOMOZ do it on there whiteboard Fridays) Your comments and suggestions will be muchly appreciated. Greg

Do I need a .com as well?
Hello Mozers, I need your advice. I have a new client that runs a paralegal shop called - Christophers Legal Advice up here in Canada ChristophersLegal.com is taken but ChristophersLegal.ca is available Question: Should I register ChristophersLegalAdvice.com and ChristophersLegalAdvice.ca and just redirect the .com to .ca (since both .com and .ca are available) or should I risk it and opt for the shorter url and just register ChristophersLegal.ca I'm thinking that I might be able to get away with just ChristophersLegal.ca since the site will be used to attract new visitors via the search engines and social media. What do you guys think?
