Have name.org want to get name.com should .com redirect to .org or other way around?
-
Its a non profit organization. With name.org acquired in 2006. name.com will be acquired soon. In SEO terms it would make sense for me just to get .com and redirect to the original .org but from the standpoint of 7 year history of name.org is it worth keeping or its irrelevant or not that important or really important. I am in the process of rebuilding the site other than the initial domain home links to other pages do not matter at the moment. Thanks Mozzies

So part of this is a new website branding, and this organization is trying to attract younger crowd and I am not sure of the studies but they might prefer .com as .org seems like an older tradition. But just guesses here

Clickthrus in SERPs are pretty much the same for .org and .com domains. If they want a new image, having it at a .com will not make that happen. A new website, new messaging, etc, that will all change their image. As long as you can keep them from moving to like a .biz, you're probably fine. The aged-ness of a domain isn't all that relevant, although a lot of SEOs like to bring it up. You could switch the domain with basically no harm, but Irving is right. If it's a charity or a non-profit, there is a weird expectation that their site be on a .org.

Irving,
Yea that is what I was thinking, seems obvious, but the org wanted to build a new image and try to appear more modern, by having the main domain be .com. How much benefit is that 7 years for the site, practically any ideas?
-
It definitely matters, since it's an aged and trusted domain AND it's a not for profit site definitely leave it as .org and forward the .com name to the .org site.

MOZ.com Page Rank of 2?
I don't recall the page rank of SEOMoz.com prior to the company's change to MOZ.com. But did notice that MOZ.com currently has a Page Rank of 2 (which I find weird since it's such a strong, content rich, highly-regarded site). I'd be interested in hearing about findings from the MOZ.com team on why the low PR and how has it affected your site since the change? (...and perhaps a look at the future through a crystal ball 🙂 I recall reading the MOZ domain changing article titled "Domain Migrations: Surviving the "Perfect Storm" of Site Changes" which had great info and addresses some reasons for PR loss in the 'Traffic and Ranking Loss' section: http://moz.com/blog/domain-migration-lessons

301 Redirects?
Hello fello Mozzers, I have just read a post about 301 redirects on the Blog. A great read and has provided me with a bit more insight and highlights what could be a potential issue for a managed site I look after. On this website I manage, I have inherited a .htaccess file with literally hundreds of non file based existant 301 links. e.g. redirect 301 /dealerbrandname http://www.domain.com/ So we have lots of dealers and they place a link on there site to http://www.domain.com/dealerbrandname We then redirect it to the homepage or a relevant topic page along with some tracking variables. Is this likely causing significant issues, based on the post I read I imagine it will be, but anymore thoughts on this would be hugely helpful. CheersTim

To link or redirect? That is the question.
I have a site that I don't really use any longer but still has some okay rankings. I'd like to take advantage of the links point to that site. Is it better to redirect that site to my new one or to just place a link on the homepage pointing to my new site?

Old website, new domain name
Hi, We have an old website which is currently being 301'ed to a new domain name / bespoke e commerce website as we're rebranding and having an increase in the range of products we will be selling. My question is can we keep the original e commerce website selling the original products under a new domain name and escape duplicate content issues with the product descriptions as we have copied & pasted product descriptions to the new website ? I'm looking to the future and building another domain name will help with future expansion plans / thoughts. Both websites are registered to us at the same business address if this helps. Please feel free to ask questions if I haven't worded this very well! Many thanks in advance.

Why is map listing split this way ?
I am trying to figure out why map listings gets split up this way. Some people gets their maplisting to the right while the generic map listing block is down after a few organic listings . Didn't they at some point of time club orgainc + map together so only one shows up in SERPs ? q2Foz.png

Is there a way to pull historical rankings for a keyword?
I have someone who's come to me and said that they have lost all of their organic keyword rankings. They did launch a site redesign a few months back so that could be a reason as to why. But after looking at the site, link profile, etc. It doesn't look like they could have been ranking for the terms they say they were. They have never implemented any SEO on their sites btw. I did not build this site and have not done any SEO, they are coming to me to solve the problem. I did notice in SEM rush that a couple months ago they were ranking organically for more terms (20 in July vs. 5 now), so they did lose some. Is there any way to see what terms they WERE ranking for?
