What's better ...more or less linking C-blocks?
-
I'm a little confused about c-blocks, I've been reading about them but I still don't get it.
- Are these similar to sitewide links?
- do they have to come from websites that I own and hosted in the same ip?
- and finally, what's better ...more or less linking c-blocks?
Cheers

More is best.
C Block refers to the "group" that an IP address links to. Lots of domains linking from the same C Block might suggest related sites or a network. Having your links coming from a wider spread of C Blocks is generally seen as good.
Like with most things in SEO it is not just a case of "more wins". the C Block of a site that links to you is just one factor amongst hundreds, maybe thousands that influence rankings. Most importantly an unusually low number compared with linking root domains can be a sign of something odd.

This is a very useful article which I hope you find of help - http://www.blindfiveyearold.com/what-is-a-c-block-ip-address

Hello there!
When you read an IP address it is something like 45.452.456.77 - this is the actual "address" on the internet where your website lives. It is like your phone number. When you put a domain on top of it the domain "maps" to the IP, it is an alias (like speed dial), they type in the name and you are sent to the right number.
The IP address has sections separated by periods. In my example above it would be aa.bbb.ccc.dd The "C-block" (and dont confuse that when you are at a bar and your buddy cuts in on a conversation you might be having with a cute young lady), is the 3rd group of numbers in an IP address starting from the left, or in my example 456
Usually, when the "c-block" section of the IP address of two different websites is different, that means that the websites are hosted on separate servers. Why does this matter? It is very easy for sites to share an IP address or even to share C-blocks. Kind of like houses. You can share the same IP address, would be the equivalent of a lot of people in the same apartment complex, the street address is the same. Having the same C-block is more like you live on the same street. Having different C-blocks is like being on different streets, or even in different zip codes or cites etc. Not a perfect analogy, but you get the idea. Sites with different C-blocks are seen as more "separate" than those that share a c-block.
Why does this matter?
If you get a ton of links from sites that all share a c-block - it looks like a link farm or link scheme and Google may ignore those links or could penalize them for you. Back in the day (not that I ever did this) you would setup a bunch of sites quickly and cheaply and they would share IPs or even be on the same c-block of IPs. You could generate a bunch of links that way. This was obviously spammy and Google cracked down.
Note that this could be one link per website linking to you, but if all the websites were in the same c-block it looks suspicious.
So, you can get links from the same c-block - it is not like an automatic penalty, but if ALL your links are from 1 or 2 c-blocks - it looks suspicious. If you host websites that are truly different from each other, they all produce original content and it makes sense to cross link, I would talk to your hosting company and make sure that each site is on a separate c-block - just to be safe. You could be "linking properly" from one site to the other, but the c-block issue could make your link pattern look suspicious.
Your host might say, "Well we cant control what IP we give you", blah blah blah. They do use different ones over time. What we have done is had one site setup on an IP, then wait a while (few months) then get a new IP for the next one etc. Naturally over time, your host will be getting new IPs all the time and so you can work it that way. You will need to update your DNS settings etc, so you need to be technically astute to change IPs, again if you think you need to (it may be that you do not).
Usually, worrying about c-blocks for links is not an issue assuming that you are getting links naturally, so this conversation may become old hat, but if you are hosting sites and linking them together, it is just something to consider.
One more, you can actually do a lookup of what sites share the same c-block. If you find a bunch of p0rn sites on that c-block or other questionable sites, that could cause an issue with your site as you are seen in the same neighborhood. Most hosts today you do not have to worry about and/or they keep those sites on separate blocks anyway, but just something to consider.

C-blocks basically refer to where an IP address is located. C-blocks are like the neighborhood and sites that share it are basically your neighbors. More linking c-blocks is better.

Is it worth keeping a decades-old domain that's merely 301 redirecting to the main domain?
Hi fellow Moz SEOs, We have a bigger client who we just did an SEO Site Audit for, and it was discovered that they have several domain names that are simply 301 redirecting to their main domain name. One of their domains in particular is decades old, and the client is asking if there is any value in keeping it (and the others), or simply leaving them as-is. Considering the domain age, does anyone have any recommendations? Much appreciated, Zack Barton

Title Tags in Sitecore are the same as navigation. How do I add keyword phrases without effecting my website's navigation?
I am working on overhauling the on-page SEO for ecommerce website on Sitecore. I've done all my research and I am ready to plug the Title tags and descriptions in. So, if the page on Navigation is 'SHOP' this is in the Title tag box. How do I add my 70 characters of keywords? Thanks. JOE

Is Chamber of Commerce membership a "paid" link, breaking Google's rules?
Hi guys, This drives me nuts. I hear all the time that any time value is exchanged for a link that it technically violates Google's guidelines. What about real organizations, chambers of commerce, trade groups, etc. that you are a part of that have online directories with DO-follow links. On one hand people will say these are great links with real value outside of search and great for local SEO..and on the other hand some hardliners are saying that these technically should be no-follow. Thoughts???

Title Tag Verses H1 Tag. Is having both the same better than different if there's only one clear winner in keyword search volume
Hi Mozzers, I am going through my categories on my eccomerce hire site trying to improve things and just wanted to check this query with you My understanding is that if I have the same H1 and title tag, then that would give more weight for that keyword phrase? Would I also be correct in assuming that the H1 is more important than the title tag or should both be treated as equals in terms of SEO. My dimemla is that for certain products we hire, there's only really one clear winner in terms of keyword phrase. The others I find in keyword planner are way down the volume list , so I have tended to put the H1 and title tag as the same and then have H2 tag and a slightly different heading. Is that the best philosphy or should I really mix them up , so the the title tag, h1, h2 are different ? Also Currently My on page content mentions the the H1 tag near the beginning of the content. Is this correct or should I really be using the H2 tag phrase near the beginning of the content. For example - One of the products we hire out is carpet cleaners. Therefore the main keyword phrase is carpet cleaner hire
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | PeteC12
and for our local pages its' carpet cleaner hire <city name="">.
This is my title tag and H1 tag and then for my h2 tag , I have something like "carpet cleaning equipment" with the content
mentioning carpet cleaner hire near the beginning.</city> I don't want to look likes its over optimization or mention the word hire to much but being a hire website, it's difficult not to and other keywords that don't mention it in it, are to varied so could increase bounce rates ?. When I look in GWT against my content keywords - the word hire shows a full bar. Just wondered what peoples thoughts are if what I am doing it okay?
thanks

Robots.txt file - How to block thosands of pages when you don't have a folder path
Hello.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Unity
Just wondering if anyone has come across this and can tell me if it worked or not. Goal:
To block review pages Challenge:
The URLs aren't constructed using folders, they look like this:
www.website.com/default.aspx?z=review&PG1234
www.website.com/default.aspx?z=review&PG1235
www.website.com/default.aspx?z=review&PG1236 So the first part of the URL is the same (i.e. /default.aspx?z=review) and the unique part comes immediately after - so not as a folder. Looking at Google recommendations they show examples for ways to block 'folder directories' and 'individual pages' only. Question:
If I add the following to the Robots.txt file will it block all review pages? User-agent: *
Disallow: /default.aspx?z=review Much thanks,

Will pages irrelevant to a site's core content dilute SEO value of core pages?
We have a website with around 40 product pages. We also have around 300 pages with individual ingredients used for the products and on top of that we have some 400 pages of individual retailers which stock the products. Ingredient pages have same basic short info about the ingredients and the retail pages just have the retailer name, adress and content details. Question is, should I add noindex to all the ingredient and or retailer pages so that the focus is entirely on the product pages? Thanks for you help!

Do EMD's give the boost everyone says they do?
Hi, I have used a few myself and if I was targeting UK search with a [emd] .co.uk, every time the domain has hit page 1 with little effort. I have done this maybe 4-5 times, my moz stats show 0 but I rank above results on page 1 with moz stats of DA:45+. Can I now say basically any EMD I buy will rocket through the serp's?

Does a page on a site with high domain authority build page authority easier? i.e. less inbound links?
Is this also why people build backlinks to their BBB profiles, Yellowpages Profiles, etc. i.e. why do people build backlinks to other pages that link to them? Wouldn't it be more beneficial to just build that backlink directly to your target?
