Showing up in Related Videos on Youtube
-
I notice that that on YouTube, the related links that show up at the end of our videos are a smorgasbord of our competitors and other videos similar in theme (which makes sense, as those are truly related videos).
What I'm curious about -- and have had difficult finding, is tips and case studies for improving and maintaining appearance in the related video sections, and perhaps some insight into how those videos are rated for for related videos. Correlation on YouTube seems to be spotty at best, I know keywords and user metrics are key, but any more specific advice or clarification on the issue would be appreciated.

I don't think that, right now, It has a huge amount to do with G+. However, you can bet that the integration will be there at some point in the near future.
-
Thank you for the clarified guidance, even if it is just speculation. It seems that I may have been looking for a new under-researched development, where none yet exists.
-
Interesting -- Thank you for a great response.
For this question I'm just focusing on YouTube.com specifically.
I have one followup question to your answer, when you say results are highly personalized, does it also have to do with connections on G+? (eg. pages you are connected to, or perhaps even people that the video itself is connected to)
-
So, there are a number of factors here.
The first thing to recognise is that related and recommended videos are highly personalised. What you see will be based on things you've seen before and videos that YouTube think may be of interest to you. So, if you've watched your competitors videos before, it's highly likely that you'll see more content from that channel again, or content targeting similar topics and keywords.
That said, there are a few other factors at play. YouTube seem to generally only recommend videos within the same broad category as the video you just watched (e.g. science and technology) and click through rate on recommended videos also seems to be a big factor in determining which ones continue to be offered vs those which are offered less.
So, to optimise for that, you should look at keyword targeting for the topics you want to be seen as "related" for, and then generally optimise the performance of the video by ensuring you have good audience retention (look through your YouTube analytics to understand how your performance shapes up) and that you're getting traffic and views through embeds/referring links.
I'd recommend having a good read through http://www.distilled.net/blog/social-media/youtube/youtube-seo/ which, despite being three years old, remains fairly accurate.
Not sure if you're speaking mostly about videos watched on YouTube.com or videos embedded on another site, but with videos you embed on your own sites, you can adjust the settings in the embed so that related videos do not show up. Just unselect the button that says "Show suggested videos when the video finishes" when you go to select your embed code.

Sorry about that Oren. I've not ready anything more recent either which would tend to suggest, until now at least, that the game hasn't changed much.
My best guess going forward as to what might change would be that we will see the same principles that Google is applying to regular search applied into YouTube. So the steady progress to search being more query based than keyword based to seek to answer the intent of the searcher's question will apply.
The other related factor is the development of semantic search and the knowledge graph. It seems reasonable if these same developments are applied to YouTube that we will see related videos providing more of the background story and associated data related to the video just displayed. Whereas up until now related videos have been chosen, for example, based on keywords in the Title, tags etc, the next evolution will see videos more related on topic.
For example, a video about the soil types need to successfully grow roses, may then offer a related video on pruning roses or the history of roses, whereas now we may more likely see just further videos on the same subject..
So, the above is not answers as such, just my speculation trying to look through a not very clear crystal ball.

Hey Peter,
Thanks for the link. I've actually read that one -- I was hoping for something a tad more recent but it's good to know I'm not the only one who is noticing how tricky this can be.
-
Hi Oren
You are right, YouTube can be tricky to optimise for and I think with its closer integration with Google+ for a time at least it may even get trickier whilst the dust settles.
There was a YouMoz blog post on this subject last year, but whilst it's a little while ago now (in terms of how fast moving online marketing can change), I think you might find it helpful:
Dominating Youtube Search and "Related Videos" Results (Case Study)
I hope that helps,
Peter

In Google SERPs some companies / government agencies have a Google-generated card for their organization and it references their Wikipedia page. It does not show for all companies /orgs that have a Wikipedia page. What is the criteria to have it shown?
Does Google have specific criteria to show a large card in the top right of SERPs that links to a national organization's Wikipedia-referenced info? These do not appear to be the Google Business Card created by individual organizations. Example having the card and org is on wikipedia: https://www.google.com/?ion=1&espv=2#q=u.s. department of labor Example no card shown and org is on wikipedia: https://www.google.com/?ion=1&espv=2#q=Occupational+Information+network

Lightbox to show our sixteen most popular products
We wish to create a minimalist Lightbox (without flashy transitions) for our home page that displays a matrix of 4 x 4 images - sixteen in all. Each image (approximately 240 wide x 360 high) needs to have its own descriptive text and a hyperlink to the appropriate page on our web site. We are trying to identify a simple yet effective SEO friendly add-on that will allow us to quickly change the Lightbox on a daily basis. Suggestions from the Moz community would be very welcome. Thanks

Will you show a case study/live analytics of Moz before and after name change?
so many people are interested these days in changing domains either for branding purposes like you did or some people believe that having an exact match domain will save the day. I believe posting any knowledge you have gained through your fantastic looking analytics system could shed light on a subject so many people seem to be asking about. Some things I would love to know regarding the amount of people that you have either gained or lost through organic search along with your ranking for the term "seo" And other things you guys must be learning along the way as well. I would also like to know your opinion of having a meter of some sort tell us just how many new people type in Moz vs seomoz I tink it would be a great topic for people to learn about branding from as well as a way to show off your new analytics. Fellow Mozers to you agree or not? ( I now see all the little tricks you guys have been putting in our head by never using seo in branding for a long time aside from of course your name) Great job on the transition. Sincerely, Thomas PS. Did Roger get a new coat of paint or did you just take him to the car wash?

Video Hosting and SEO
Generally speaking self hosting of video is good for SEO. But if a client has a weekly/daily webshow that they will be launching (from scratch), how should we handle the hosting? Is onsite still better? Should we use Youtube to start and gain traction and than swtich once we have built viewership or Should we use self hosted video and than post it to Youtube at a later date?

Public Relations and SEO in 2012
With all the stress on inbound marketing and focusing on links for traffic and not just SEO, it would seem to me that going forward the best skilled people for the job of link building are public relations consultants (at least for startups). PR folks have the contacts and training to get publicity on the big authority sites and really drive big traffic as well as strong links. What am I missing? For link building, why should we hire an SEO firm and not a PR firm? Secondly, I've been contacting a few agencies to get some idea of what they charge and most seem to start at about $5k pm whereas we only have a budget of around $1k for link building. Am I wasting my time thinking I may get any benefit at this low of a budget? I'd love to hear from anyone with any experience using PR firms/consultants and if you have any recommendations that would be great also.

Video's Pros and Cons - YouTube vs My website or both?
This isn't really a question per say, but more of a request for advise. We are in the process of creating videos for our travel website. They are more informational and do not promote any products as such. I am aware of the options, and I am leaning towards creating a pro account with Vimeo so that the videos are available only on our website. The reason for this is so that we can at least get credit for our work, as when they are on you tube, anybody can syndicate the video without linking to our website. I am also aware that there are allot of searches happening on YouTube, and it may be worse if we choose not to upload our videos there as we would loose out on a big audience. it would be GREAT if we had the best of both options. And i had an idea i want to get your opinions on. Create the video and upload onto our website with "lower competitive" title / meta / body. Submit the video on YouTube with a "Higher competitive" keyword / title /meta and description. When someone finds our video, they might search YouTube to avoid linking back and wont find it, (although it is there getting traffic from a similar keyword) Branding is the number 1 objective for these videos, so you tube + many other video sites would be the way to go. However, i would also like our own "private" video blog on our site so that if web masters like the video, we can give them the option of embedding it on there site (like SEOMOZ do it on there whiteboard Fridays) Your comments and suggestions will be muchly appreciated. Greg
