Penguin Penalty?
-
The past 2 days, specific keywords Ive been ranking well for have disappeared. If I google specific with brand it still shows up. So I havent been removed from the index. Is it possible that I was hit by penguin without any type of notice in the webmaster account? Organic traffic dropped substantialy in the past couple days without any warnings.
Any help greatly appreciated!
Thank You

Hi Marcus! I sent you a PM
Thanks!!

There are three likely scenarios for this kind of plummet
1. Manual Penalty which comes with an email from Google in webmaster tools
2. Panda
3. Penguin
Penguin is unlikely, panda seems odd to have happened two days ago but based on how you describe the site, it seems the most likely of the options.
Hard to say much more without a link.

If it were a link problem wouldnt google notify me via Webmaster Tools? I have a feeling it may be the content. It is a large ecom. site with custom up to 70,000 urls. I have been working on cutsom content on pages that will bring best ROI, should I be blocking the other pages that have "Default" content and only pull keywords? Could this cause the problem?

Hi, what about the content on your site? What about the links? Most possible Marcus have right and you got hit by the recent update...If you want to recover you will fins this very useful http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-wpmuorg-recovered-from-the-penguin-update
Thanks

Hey
Penguin is an algorithm and not a manual penalty so you will not get an email as such in Webmaster Tools letting you know anything but you can do some investigation yourself.
There has not been any chatter (or I have not seen any) regarding a Penguin update in the last few days so it may be something else entirely. As it happens, there was a panda update on the 18th I believe so if your traffic drop corresponds with that date then that could be your problem.
It's kind of tough to give advice without a URL and indication of just what keywords you are targeting but certainly, if you want drop those in I would be happy to give it a five minute once over if that helps?
If you want to do some digging into whether you have a penguin style link penalty this links are useful:

Hope this helps and fire over a URL and will take a better look.

400+ deleted pictures, 404 on URLs, can they be deleted without penalty?
A client had a website redesign and over 400 pictures (she's a photographer) were lost. The URL's (ending in .png) are hanging out there and according to the site scan, they have a matching current URL. Since the pictures are gone can the URL be deleted?

Google penalty was lifted when an SSL was added, only to come back. Have you seen this?
We took on a client who is under penalty (various reasons). The solution was a ground up new website with fresh content, domain, everything. This client has everything "right" in Google. Everything you would want a client to do, he's done. Great reviews, great offsite engagement, video, etc. Recently we updated his SSL and for about 1 week he came off penalty, only to come back on penalty (top three for every major term in a very competitive market back to around page three). Do you have any experience with this and if so, I'd love to hear your advice/rational of why this occurred and what it means?

Disavow post Penguin update
As recent Penguin update makes quick move with backlinks with immediate impact; does Disavow tool also results the changes in few days rather than weeks like earlier? How long does it take now to see the impact of disavow? And I think still we must Disavow some links even Google claim that it'll take care of bad backlinks without passing value from them?

Very Slow Recovery after Manual Penalty Removed - Are we missing something?
Our site was handed a manual penalty in November 2013 where exact match anchor text and low quality directory submissions seemed to be the problem. We began the process of link removal, reconfiguration and disavowing. We had already planned to change our domain in early 2014 to coincide with our SSL certificate renewal and although we were hesitant to do this with the manual penalty still there we proceeded and 301'd most of the site but left the pages that were the landing page for most of the exact match links as 302 to the new domain. We continued to work on removing the manual penalty for the old domain as we didn't want it to pass over to the new one and eventually this was removed n March 2014 Now the penalty is gone are we safe to change those 302 redirects to 301 so everything redirects. The problem we have is that six months on, a lot of the pages for the old domain are still indexed and even though we are indexed for the new domains are rankings haven't recovered. Is it just a case of needing to build up a new quality link profile to replace the links that were disregarded or removed when recovering from the penalty or we missing something else

Penguin 2.0 update, ranking dropped. Advice needed!
Hello After another penguin 2.0 update the website i've been working on dropped in rankings, some of keywords that i ranked in #1 are now on second and third page, you can see this screenshot here http://screencast.com/t/MramoXgTr 95% of my competitors were not even effected with this update at all, most of them don't even optimize their website for SEO, rather they use paid directories. First thing i did is analyzed my backing profile using OSE, to my surprise i found a lot of low quality domains pointing to my pages with a keyword in anchor text. A lot of them blog commenting and low quality article directories. Since i don't have control over these links and i cant remove them i used Disavow tool to do the job. For the past 3 months, i've been doing a lot of hight quality link building; such as

Penguin or paid link penalty, or both?
Hello, I have a site, macpokeronline.com, that has seen dramatic decrease in visitors in the last few months, it has went down from 800 per day to 200 per day. It is a pretty complex situation. The site owner purchased paid links from reputable mac sites for years (they were more of followed advertisements, but were only there for SEO Purposes), now that i'm going through the link profligate ins OSE, I can see that a majority of their links come from these sites. There is also a branding issue, there are almost 15,000 links with the anchor text of "macpokeronline.com" These are obviously branded links, I don't know the best way to deal with them (though the majority are coming from the paid link sites) We have just sent the request in to remove the paid links from the sites, and i'm guessing since he is paying over $1000 a month for the links, they will be removed quickly. The site has been receiving significantly less traffic since penguin (apr 24-25) We received a message on July 19th which was the generic unnatural link warning, saying that once we remove links make a reconsideration request. Then on July 23rd, we received another message that says they are taking a "very targeted action on the unnatural links instead of your site as a whole" which I have never seen before. This damage was done before I was hired by this client, I just want to get his traffic back up so I can help him even further, I want to know more about the steps I should take. 1. I will definitely remove the paid ads What else should I do, thanks Zach

Can Linking Between Your Own Sites Excessively Be a Penguin No-No?
I have a bunch of travel-related sites that for a long time dominated google.com.au without any intensive SEO whatsoever. Aside from solid on-page content and meta tag, I did no link building. However, all of my sites are heavily interlinked, and I think they are linked with do follow links and lots of anchor texts. Here are a few of them: www.beautifulpacific.com www.beautifulfiji.com www.beautifulcooklands.com My idea in inter-linking them was to create a kind of branded "Beautiful" nexus of sites. However, when Penguin hit -- which I believe was on April 27th -- search traffic crashed, and has crashed over and over again. I've read that Penguin penalized over-optimization vis a vis anchor text links. I don't have a lot of inbound links like these, but they are everywhere among my sites. Is it possible that all of my text links have hurt me with Penguin? Thanks to everyone in advance for your time and attention. I really appreciate it. -Mike
