Huge drop in rankings for specialist life insurance site
-
I work with a site who specialise in life insurance for people with pre-existing medical conditions - http://goo.gl/Drwre6. The site has ranked really well historically, but was hit hard on 16th June when we saw an almost 100% drop in rankings overnight.
We picked up on quite a few issues straight away and rectified these. A list of steps we've taken so far are below:
- removed CSS & JS files from robots.txt
- changed hosting provider back, as it had recently been moved somewhere new
- updated copy on main landing pages to remove small amounts that were duplicated
- requested removal of some suspicious looking backlinks and submitted a disavow
- found and removed a test site that was live and indexable
- found an external site that had scraped copy from our site - requested removal (this site is no longer live)
- cleaned up any 404 and ensured all redirects are working correctly
- updated the diabetes page to include more valuable info - including linking out to authority sites
After taking all these steps, we have still seen no improvement. It could be that Google just hasn't yet re-crawled the site to take the changes into account...?
We're aware of one other site in our industry that has noticed a drop in rankings in the last couple of months, but a number of our competitors are still ranking well for our target terms.
We wonder if the site was caught up in the Payday Loans update, as the timings almost line up. Other sites with spammy medical content seem to have been hit, so we wonder if the "medical" type content on our site could have been penalised? Incredibly frustrating if so, as it's a valid, genuine service being offered!
Really at a bit of a loss as to what to do next, so any help would be hugely appreciated!

Also make sure that no one in WMT has checked the box to remove the site from Google's index. Doing so will usually result in a warning, so it's unlikely you wouldn't have seen it. The only thing you mentioned that I'd look into more would be the hosting change, but that impact should have been more or less immediate.
Are you receiving any organic traffic from Google? A huge drop could mean a lot of things, but 0 traffic usually means a technical issue is to blame. If you've just lost most of your traffic, it's possible that it's a penalty or algorithm adjustment of some sort. There are a few directory links that I'd be concerned about, and I'd disavow any questionable sites with sitewide links (I saw at least one). It could also be a Panda or a "Payday" adjustment.
Check the algorithm history and see if it aligns with your drop in traffic:

Hi Katie,
Sounds like you've ticked off most of the boxes.
May we suggest you consider these as options:
- Check GWT>Change of Address to check no one has redirected the website. We are seeing hackers using this approach more frequently.
- Resend a disavow to GWT. A quick report with CognitiveSEO says the domain still has 51% unnatural links. ahrefs.com confirms the removal of links which is a good sign.
The domain doesn't seem to be indexed often. Using the 'tbs' query, you'll notice within the last 30 days (give or take 3/5 days) Google says it only indexed 3 pages. Searching by hour, 24 hours and week produce no results. Do the server stats confirm the reduction of visits from Google?
A Copyscape batch analysis says 8 pages contain large amounts of content that exists on 30 over websites. Five of these are seemingly important landing pages whereas the rest are news pages or quote form.
Don't want to teach you how to suck eggs, however while you have been trying to put out the fire, has proactive outreach been applied too?
Thanks,
Phil -
How about a sampling of some of the terms you used to rank highly for and now are not?
-
Hi Ruben
Thanks for your reply.
Google have cached the majority of main pages since we made the changes.. but perhaps if they haven't crawled the site very deeply, they won't have picked up some of the site wide changes that we've made. Eg. in WMT, they haven't yet picked up that some of the bad links are no longer live, and these were taken down a few weeks ago now..

It could be that Google just hasn't yet re-crawled the site to take the changes into account...?
Do you know how to check that? If not, type your company into google. Then, in the SERPs, you'll see your company's site. At the far right of the url for your site, you'll see a little arrow. Click the arrow. There will be a chose of "cached" or "similar." Select cached and at the top of page, you will see that last time google indexed your site. Then, at least you'll know if the changes haven't worked at all or just haven't been indexed.
Best,
Ruben

Google Indexed Site A's Content On Site B, Site C etc
Hi All, I have an issue where the content (pages and images) of Site A (www.ericreynolds.photography) are showing up in Google under different domains Site B (www.fastphonerepair.com), Site C (www.quarryhillvet.com), Site D (www.spacasey.com). I believe this happened because I installed an SSL cert on Site A but didn't have the default SSL domain set on the server. You were able to access Site B and any page from Site A and it would pull up properly. I have since fixed that SSL issue and am now doing a 301 redirect from Sites B, C and D to Site A for anything https since Sites B, C, D are not using an SSL cert. My question is, how can I trigger google to re-index all of the sites to remove the wrong listings in the index. I have a screen shot attached so you can see the issue clearer. I have resubmitted my site map but I'm not seeing much of a change in the index for my site. Any help on what I could do would be great. Thanks

Site rankings down
Our site is over 10 years old and has consistently ranked highly in google.co.uk for over 100 key phrases. Until the middle of April, we were 7th for 'nuts and bolts' and 5th for 'bolts and nuts' - we have been around these positions for 5-6 years easily now. Our rankings dropped mid-April, but now (presumably as a result of Penguin 2.0), we've seen larger decreases across the board. We are now 5th page on 'nuts and bolts', and second page on 'bolts and nuts'. Can anyone please shed any light on this? Although we'd fallen some before Penguin 2.0, we've fallen quite a bit further since. So I'm wondering if it's that. We do still rank well on our more specialised terms though - 'imperial bolts', 'bsw bolts', 'bsf bolts', we're still top 5. We've lost out with the more generic terms. In the past we did a bit of (relevant) blog commenting and obtained some business directory links, before realising the gain was tiny if at all. Are those likely to be the issue? I'm guessing so. It's hard to know which to get rid of though! Now, I use social media sparingly, just Facebook, Twitter and G+. The only linkbuilding I do now is by sending polite emails to people who run classic car clubs that would use our bolts, stuff like that. I've had a decent response from that, and a few have become customers directly. Here's our link profile if anyone would be kind enough as to have a look: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=www.thomassmithfasteners.com Also, SEOMOZ says we have too many links on our homepage (107) - the dropdown navigation is the culprit here. Should I simply get rid of the dropdown and take users to the categories? Any advice here would be appreciated before I make changes! If anyone wants to take a look at the site, the URL is in the link profile above - I'm terrified of posting links anywhere now! Thanks for your time, and I'd be very grateful for any advice. Best Regards, Stephen

Our quilting site was hit by Panda/Penguin...should we start a second "traffic" site?
I built a website for my wife who is a quilter called LearnHowToMakeQuilts.com. However, it has been hit by Panda or Penguin (I’m not quite sure) and am scared to tell her to go ahead and keep building the site up. She really wants to post on her blog on Learnhowtomakequilts.com, but I’m afraid it will be in vain for Google’s search engine. Yahoo and Bing still rank well. I don’t want her to produce good content that will never rank well if the whole site is penalized in some way. I’ve overly optimized in linking strongly to the keywords “how to make a quilt” for our main keyword, mainly to the home page and I think that is one of the main reasons we are incurring some kind of penalty. First main question: From looking at the attached Google Analytics image, does anyone know if it was Panda or Penguin that we were “hit” by? And, what can be done about it? (We originally wanted to build a nice content website, but were lured in by a get rich quick personality to rather make a “squeeze page” for the Home page and force all your people through that page to get to the really good content. Thus, our avenge time on site per person is terrible and Pages per Visit is low at: 1.2. We really want to try to improve it some day. She has a local business website, Customcarequilts.com that did not get hit. Second question: Should we start a second site rather than invest the time in trying to repair the damage from my bad link building and article marketing? We do need to keep the site up and running because it has her online quilting course for beginner quilters to learn how to quilt their first quilt. We host the videos through Amazon S3 and were selling at least one course every other day. But now that the Google drop has hit, we are lucky to sell one quilting course per month. So, if we start a second site we can use that to build as a big content site that we can use to introduce people to learnhowtomakequilts.com that has Martha’s quilting course. So, should we go ahead and start a new fresh site rather than to repair the damage done by my bad over optimizing? (We’ve already picked out a great website name that would work really well with her personal facebook page.) Or, here’s a second option, which is to use her local business website: customcarequilts.com. She created it in 2003 and has had it ever since. It is only PR 1. Would this be an option? Anyway I’m looking for guidance on whether we should pursue repairing the damage and whether we should start a second fresh site or use an existing site to create new content (for getting new quilters to eventually purchase her course). Do I have to tell WBT site moved to a subdirectory on another internal site?
I am moving content from one site to another and redirecting the DNS from www.oldsite.com to www.newsite.com/old-site. I have put the 301 in place but I wanted to make sure I have to also tell Webmaster Tools to change the old site to the new domain? We still want the old domain name to answer and redirect to www.newsite.com/old-site. Thanks

Purchased a high ranking domain and want to transfer my site to the new domain
I recently purchased a highly ranked domain. The link profile is very good and I don't want to lose to many links however I want to transfer my site to that domain. What is the best way of doing this without losing the current rank on search engines? Also how much does the transfer of registrar information impact my SEO?

How do you prevent the mobile site becoming a duplicate of the full browser site?
We have a larger site with 100k+ pages, we need to create a mobile site which gets indexed in the mobile engines but I am afraid that google bot will consider these pages duplicates of the normal site pages. I know I can block it on the robots.txt but I still need it to be indexed for mobile search engines and I think google has a mobile crawler as well. Feel free to give me any other tips that I should follow while trying to optimize the mobile version. Any help would be appreciated 🙂
