Htaccess Question - Is this the way to go to consolidate?
-
Hi all,
My site seems to have www.xyz.com, http://www.xyz.com, http://xyz.com and other variations! From an old agency doing this. All showing differing backlinks etc. SO I want to merge them so I can just look at one analytics account - with everything combined.
I want it just to consolidate all to https:///www.xym.com as the client wants - how do I do this? Does it take long to take effect??
Also I presume in webmaster I'll have to set up the preferred extension?
Thanks very much for any advice

We can help you get all those urls to point to the https on the server. But what reports are you referring to?
-
It's actually just by looking at link reports to the variations that I can see they fluctuate with differing versions. So I'm looking for a simple way to make sure all the prefixes redirect to https://. Thanks for the comments so far.
-
Excellent addition. Probably a combination of both since he states that the client wants to migrate to HTTPS. We'll have to get clarification from Giles.

Ryan,
I was going to mention this but after I re-read it. It seems he is dealing with an issue inside Google Webmaster Central that shows reports for more then one domain. I have seen this before where they list domains likehttp://www.site.com
http://www.site.com/shop
http://www.site.com/Each showing different metrics.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Giles. You'll end up with something similar to this:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on
RewriteRule ^(.*) https://%{SERVER_NAME}/$1 [R,L]RewriteRule ^page1(.*) https://%{SERVER_NAME}/page1$1 [R,L]
The first being an example of redirecting an entire domain to HTTPS and the second, a specific page.
The effects of the redirection are immediate in the sense that once the .htaccess file is changed the redirection will be in place. What takes a longer amount of time is for the change to carry over in Google's ranking and throughout the web. Using the tools in GWT and Bing can help.
Here are a couple of guides that you might find useful: http://moz.com/blog/web-site-migration-guide-tips-for-seos and http://moz.com/learn/seo/redirection.

How Can I Redirect an Old Domain to Our New Domain in .htaccess?
There is an old version of http://chesapeakeregional.com still floating around the web here: http://www.dev3.com.php53-24.dfw1-2.websitetestlink.com/component/content/category/20-our-services. Various iterations of this domain pop up when I do certain site:searches and for some queries as well (such as "Diagnostic Center of Chesapeake"). About 3 months ago the websitetestlink site had files and a fully functional navigation but now it mostly returns 404 or 500 errors. I'd like to redirect the site to our newer site, but don't believe I can do that in chesapeakeregional.com's .htaccess file. Is that so and would I need access to the websitetestlink .htaccess to forward the domain? Note* I (nor anyone else in our organization) has the login for the old site. The new site went live about 9 months before I arrived at the organization and I've been slowly putting the pieces together since arriving.

Question about structuring @id schema tags
We are using JSON-LD to apply schema. My colleague had question about applying @id tags in the schema parent lists: While implementing schema, we've included @id as a parameter to both the "list" child of "ListItem" of a "BreadcrumbList" - on the same schema, we've added an @id parameter to mainContentOfPage and both @id parameters are set to the pages URL. Having this @id in both places is giving schema checker results that have the child elements of "mainContentOfPage" appearing under the "list" item. Questions: is this good or bad? Where should @id be used? What should @id be set to? Thanks for the insight!

Launching V2 of my site - what questions to ask the SEO Agency
Hi I am in the process of launching a new version of my site and I know I need to get my current SEO Agency to check and test certain aspects of the site so that I don't lose any rankings. The problem is I am unsure of everything to ask them and I was wondering if someone could help me out. I don't want to have missed something basic and therefore want to give them a checklist to confirm they are happy before go live. Any help appreciated

Going after multiple similar keywords, which is the better approach?
Let's say I have a page targeting a keyword, "New York Restaurants". There are also several "very close" variations of this keyword which I could also target. Here are the volume estimates: New York Restaurants - 100
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | jcgoodrich
Restaurants New York - 40
Best Restaurants New York - 30
Best Restaurants in New York - 20
etc. Given this, which of the following is the better overall approach? A) Have one page and work all of these keywords so the page targets all of them. For example here try to weave in "Best" in different ways. B) Have multiple pages and use 301 redirects. Create one page only targeted at "New York Restaurants" and then create additional pages with the other terms in the URL and Headline, which 301 redirect to my "New York Restaurants" page. This is similar to how wikipedia does redirects, for example "Bourne 2" 301 redirects to "Bourne Supremacy". Thanks! | New York Restaurants | 12,100 | Medium | $0.93 | 0% | ACCOUNT |
| Restaurants New York | 2,900 | Medium | $1.00 | 0% | ACCOUNT |
| Best Restaurants in New York | 3,600 | Low | $0.69 | 0% | ACCOUNT |
| Best New York Restaurants | 2,400 | Low | $0.80 | 0% | ACCOUNT |
| New York's Best Restaurants | 260 | Low | $0.76 | 0% |0 -
Technical Site Questions
When i do a google cache of our site, i see 2 menus, our developers say that's because the 2nd is for the mobile menu - is that correct, as when i look up other sites that have mobile rendering they only have one menu visible. Plus GWT's has the number of internal links per page at least x2 what they should have - are they connected? Secondly when i do a spider test through http://tools.seobook.com/general/spider-test/ it shows all "behind the scenes text" eg font names, portals, sliders, margins - "font size px" is shown as 17 times and a density of 2.15% - surely this isnt correct as google will be thinking that these are my keywords !? My site is www.over50choices.co.uk Thanks Ash

Rankings going down down down
Hi guys, I know this is a little open ended, but any advice/ideas would be greatly appreciated. I launched a new site about 3 months ago (www.transfersandshuttles.co.za). I have had unique, useful articles written for it, and the site does provide a useful service. I have done a little link building and continue to do so. The site was making decent progress moving up the rankings for a few weeks, but now it just seems to get worse and worse.

How 'Off Topic' can I go - site wide?
Hello, I am currently number 1 for a competitive keyword - so don't want to push the wrong button and self destruct! My site is highly focused on one relatively narrow niche with about 50-60 pages of content bang on topic. I was wondering if Google will discredit my site in any way if I start adding pages that are** 'loosely related' **to the overall theme of my niche. Some of them are what you might call sister concepts with maybe one mention of my target keyword in the body..... Does the algo value what percentage of the whole site's content is on/ off topic? If so how important is this as a factor? Thanks a lot
