International Domains for SEO
-
My company is international and we have websites for each country with Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLD). I am in the US and I am seeing that other countries such as Costa Rica and Germany are ranking above us in search results. I thought Google automatically geo-targeted users by default and therefore I should only get .com or US results. Any idea why other countries would rank above our site?

Apart everything the others said in their answers, and taking for granted that you see others "foreign" web sites outranking yours, I would consider others things than just geo-targeting factors.
I looked at your web site (which is http://www.fastlaneus.com/... as I supposed reading your username here and searching for it on Google) and, if we consider the main keywords you are targeting:
"Authorized CISCO Training (non personalized SERP)
- I see Cisco ranking in the first 6 positions with its domain/subdomains... this is quite normal;
- I see newhorizons.com, which is a business company with a global presence and with a great link profile (1000+ unique linking domains and DA 63). It's ranking with an internal page, toward which they were able to build and/or earn some deep backlink from 7 unique domain names. This is a good practice in order to strengthen important internal landing pages. So, at first, it seems correct its presence;
- I see pearsonvue.com.. another huge company with global presence and with giant link profile. It ranks worst than newhorizons.com possibly because its on-site SEO is less than perfect, but it is the clear example of how having a great link profile still matters a lot;
- I see lrseducationservices.com, which is company smaller than the others (its a Pearson Vue Test Center too). It's 100% USA based (Illinois). It is not a web site we would expect to see ranking in page 1: a) Almost non-existent link profile and b) the page ranking is not exactly optimized for "Authorized CISCO Training". I don't have the time to dig deeper into the reason why Google shows this site, but I would not exclude a test Google does sometimes (showing something worth in the 1st page and start seeing user signals);
- Finally, in position 10, I see globalknowledge.com. Again another multinational company with a link profile much stronger than the one your site owns.
Good news... fastlaneus.com is ranking in position 11. This means that the situation is not that bad at all.
Maybe you should start thinking more about creating content marketing campaigns that can bring you:
- Big links;
- Great brand visibility;
- Increase of branded and direct traffic.
Other things:
- Improve, then, the quality of your blog, so to earn more interested readers (I read few posts, and they tend to be a masked infomercial).
- Create content you promised with a link (webinars) and that in reality do not exist (I don't see any link to any webinar in the webinar page);
- The webinar page, as everything related to your "community" is sitting in a different domain name (http://fastlane-community.com/). I don't know the reasons of this decision, but maybe you should start thinking about consolidating the community part into the main web site.
- The infographic of your site are not really my style (too verbose)... and they lack of any opportunity to be share (no single page with social media buttons for social sharing and no text commenting the infographic, no embed code for the infographic... nada de nada)
- Your brochures/PDFs are indexed... why? a PDF like this http://www.fastlaneus.com/medi_a/pdf/Cisco-Training_US_8-pg_web.pdf substantially targets the same main keywords you want your organic html landing pages to rank.
And I could continue, but I stop because this is not the place for an audit :D... and also because imagine your site is not fastlaneus.com despite of your user name!!!! :D.
Everything you think about geotargeting and geo-localization of the SERPs is true in theory. In reality Google tends to show the sites it considers better responding to the search intents. And in this effort Google sometimes gets things wrong, as when it presents sites clearly targeting another country (and regional Google) in Google.com.
This also may happen for another reason that in the USA tends to be forgotten.
Formerly Google.com is not only for targeting the USA, but for targeting the global public. It is only because of recurring habit in the States and the same history of Google that made Google.com the preferred Google for targeting USA, so much that if you type in google.us, you are redirected to google.com (302 redirect).
To conclude this "essay"...
- If you are targeting the USA public, then geo-target your site in Search Console (see links in the others answers);
- Start thinking about my suggestions above
- Implement the hreflang annotations, so to suggest Google what site should be presented to the users depending on their location and language.

Hi,
Here is a little info I have shared with others on international SEO.
In order to rule out issues with your own sites, start by reading this checklist from MOZ as it will give you a great grounding and allow you to quickly identify and remedy any problems.
I would also read this article from Google as this will walk you through what you need to do.
HREFLANG will be used to explain to Google about international pages with duplicate content.
Any idea why other countries would rank above our site?
I would also like to know how you are determining these facts. If you are just searching from your own machine, there could be all kinds of personalisation getting in the way. If this is the case, use something like MOZ or Positionly, etc., to track SERP positions accurately.
If you are seeing these results from within a tracking app, then refer back to my first points above and check that everything is in order with your sites. You might stumble across an easy fix.

Are you looking at rankings manually on Google results pages OR via rank tracking type software (such as Moz) ?
If the former then have you deleted history/cache etc and/or searched in incognito mode etc etc to help filter out subjective considerations like search & surfing history etc to try and make the results as objective as possible?, since if not that could be skewing the results ?
Have you geo targeted the websites to their target countries in Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools) ?
In addition you can also apply 'hreflang' country/language attributes to further try & control which regional search results the various country versions appear in (but only of you definately don't want them appearing in US results too)
Just a few thoughts hope they help a bit !
All Best

301 Redirect Only Home Page/Root Domain via Domain Registrar Only
Hi All, I am really concerned about doing a 301 redirect. This is my situation: Both Current and New Domain is registered with a local domain registrar (similar to GoDaddy but a local version) Current Domain: Servers are pointing to Wix servers and the website is built and hosted with Wix I would like to do a 301 redirect but would like to do it in the following way with a couple of factors to keep in mind: 99% of my link are only pointed to the home page/root domain only. Not to subdirectories. New Domain: I will register this with wix with a new plan but keep the exact sitemap and composition of current website and launch with new domain. Current Domain: I want to change server pointing to wix to point to local domain registrar servers. Then do a 301 redirect for only the home page/root domain to point to the new domain listed with wix. So 301 is done via local registrar and not via Wix. Another point to mention is it will also change from Http to Https as well as a name change. Your comments on the above will be greatly appreciated and as to whether there is risk in trying to do a 301 redirect as above. Doing it as above it also cheaper if I do the 301 via the wix platform I will need to register a full new premium plan and run it concurrently to the old plan whereas if I do it as mentioned above will only have the additional domain annual fee. Look forward to your comments. Mike

Social Impacts on SEO? How to Do this?
I'm new in SEO and heard by one of my friend that social signals are important for SEO of a website. If people have shared a website's url on their twitter, then it will automatically get rank in google. Is that true and how google sees this social sharing? and how can I do this for my website?

Internal nofollows?
We have a profile page on our site for members who join. The profile page has child pages that are simply more specific drill-downs of what you get on the main profile page. For example: /roger displays all of roger's posts, questions, and favorites and then there are /roger/posts, /roger/questions, /roger/favorites. Since the child pages contain subsets of the content on the main profile page, we canonical them back to the main profile page. Here's my question: The main profile page has navigation links to take you to the child pages. On /roger, there are links to: /roger/posts, /roger/questions, and /roger/favorites. Currently, we nofollow these links. Is this the right way to do it? It seems to me that it's a mistake, since the bots will still crawl those pages but will not transfer PR. What should we do instead: 1. Make the links js links so the child pages won't be crawled at all? 2. Make the links follow so that PR will flow (see Matt Cutts' advice here)? Apprehension about doing this: won't it dilute crawl budget (as opposed to #1)? 3. Something else? In case the question wasn't confusing enough... here's another piece: We also have a child page of the profile that is simply a list of members (/roger/friends). Since this page does not have any real content, we are currently noindex/nofollow -ing it and the link to this page is also nofollow. I'm thinking that there's a better solution for this as well. Would love your input!

Hello,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | dror999
I have a question that I can't find a good answer on.
I have a site, actually a "portal"/ "directory" for service providers.
Now, for start, we opened every service provider own page on our site, but now we get a lot of applications from those providers that thy want sites from their own.
We want to make every service provider his own site, but on sub domain url. ( they don’t mind… its ok for them)
So, my site is www.exaple.com
There site will be: provider.exaple.com
Now I have two questions:
1. can it harm my site in SEO?
2. if one from those sub domain , punished by google because is owner do "black hat seo" , how it will affect the rood domin? It can make the root domain to get punished?

What would be the best domain choice?
Hello I got a website www.keywordCA.com and I'm ranking #1 spot on "keyword" but what I notice if you have the exact match you get more site links and etc. Like this keyword that match with my domain name "keyword CA" The ideal name will be www.keyword.com but is taken and the owner don't want to sell the domain (at least he is not using it, is just parked) and I also got the domain www.keyword.net Do you think www.keyword.net will be much better than KeywordCA.com in order to get more exposure and google will generate more site links?

Migrating online store to subdomain using shopify and effects on seo and energy down the road for seo
I'm looking for some clarity... Looking at using Shopify for an existing online store that we have to migrate. Setting up the store with shopify means we will be using a subdomain such as shop.mywebsite.com instead of mywebsite.com/shop. The following are points to consider when responding The client currently has an online store, however it's a proprietary shopping store and CMS that has since gone defunct and they need to migrate to an alternative in order to survive online against new CMS systems that allow the site and its content to be better optimized. There is a lot of existing SEO done on the current site that we don't want to loose PR on. There is roughly 2000 products Client has a fixed budget, dealing with checkout issues, custom work and various other "bugs" seems to be easier controlled with Shopify...thus budget can be used more on content/strategy and migration We want to run the main site in Wordpress and are wanting to use Shopify since it supports a gateway, has great features and seems like it would allow us to get more bang for the buck and can focus more on the main site and content strategy and drive traffic to the subdomain store if needed Or main concern is the effort of migrating 2000+ products to shopify and the traffic and PR it gives the current site will have a negative effect on the main domain itself. Should we really be considering this path? The domain is diveidc.com One main benefit to the subdomain is the ability to clearly segment products from the service portion of the site in the analytics and focus 2 clear strategies and track it in a very defined manner. We're really on the fence with this...any thoughts are welcome.

Does domain WhoIs Privacy affect SEO efforts?
Hi guys, I got a hopefully quick question. I am designing a site currently that is made up of many different domain names as part of a network. I've heard that Google will penalize however is linking is passed back and forth between these domains if the registrant information was the same. I have WhoIS privacy information on all the domains to stop telemarketers and spam as well as (hopefully stop Google from getting suspicious). I'm not doing anything bad or against Google rules but I can see how they might think that if I have a huge network and links are being passed between these. It's a friend of mine who owns like 2000 domains and he wants to put legitimate information on each one and rank them higher, it's an interesting concept but I won't go into to much detail. So my question is basically, does having WhoIS privacy on all these domains, will it affect me in anyway in the SEO process? Will google count the links passing back and forth as legitimate? Or might it get suspicious and think I am spam? Are there ways to see what server it's coming from? Should all these sites be on different servers? Any help is much appreciated!
