Redirect from a previous url
-
Hi - newbie question
I have a customer who's had previous versions of his website.
Previously it was known as "princess-interiors.co.uk" (been around for a few years) and is now "princess-design.co.uk" (been around also for a few years).
New site is WordPress - what would be the best way to redirect (I have access to the previous version of the site which is still hosted).
I expect it's to use 301, but how would I do that (step by step), and does www. versus non-www need addressing (and how).
Really concerned, as this site has gone to zero organic visits!!
Hoping somebody can help.
Thanks

Hi Mark,
1. Yes, You have to do that in Previous website from where you want the redirection to happen.
2. Anything whichever works best for you. But Fix one and work on it. check in google which version of your site is indexed more by "site:www.domain.com" and "site:domain.com" . Its easy to decide this way.
Note: Since its wordpress you can do it in the wordpress settings back end.

Hi - thanks for the reply
The previous site was html - there are two points...
1. I understand that it's best to map each page using a 301? - do I do that on the previous website?
2. should I redirect to www or non-www version of new site?
Cheers
M

HI Mark,
What CMS is your Previous version of site ? Is it wordpress or using PHP. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to redirect a PHP web page that is outside your WordPress installation, you can use a PHP redirect.
PHP redirect.
You can redirect a PHP page by adding this line of code to the header:
header("HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently");
header("Location: http://www.yournewwebsite.com");
?>
Note that the “301 Moved Permanently” line is necessary to advise search engines that you are using a 301 redirection. You also need to ensure that this code is placed at the top of the page to ensure the redirection works correctly.
If you would like to use redirection within a theme or plugin you are developing, you can use the WordPress wp_redirect function.
Redirect a Page Using a WordPress Plugin:
One easy solution is Quick Page/Post Redirect Plugin. The plugin allows you to perform 301, 302, 307, or meta refresh redirects. Redirection is a another great plugin that features 404 page monitoring. It will show you exactly what pages are generating 404 page errors and allow you to create 301, 302, and 307 redirects, for each of those links.

What is the best way to remove a link that redirects to a spammy site?
I've got a new client and I'm trying to clean up their backlinks. There are several links that all redirect to this spam site http://www.expert-lender.com. All of the websites appear to be real, i.e. http://www.sammorganhomes.com/ but the actual links i.e http://www.sammorganhomes.com/wp-fav/backup/supplement/semitruckleasing.html are in a sub-directory and redirect to the spam site. I don't know if these links were from the previous SEO company or if they paid someone to create these or if these sites have been hacked. Can anyone tell me what is going on here and what should I tell these site owners?

Links or Redirect?
My client's company has just acquired another company in the same industry and with that acquisition came two websites; companyname.com and companyname.co.uk. companyname.com has PA13 and DA10, companyname.co.uk has PA15 and DA10. At the moment, the two companies are to be run as separate companies but will become fully merged in time. My client's own website is brand new (PA1 and DA) and I'm wondering what is the best way to use these other two sites to improve my client's search ranking. Should I use the two sites to link to my client (these would be logical and natural links e.g. explaining the acquisition, under new management) or would it simply be better to redirect the domains to the new site? Many thanks

301 Redirect Domains with old links
I came across a nice discovery of about 20 old domain names that each have many root domains and a bit of DA. I want to know the best way to utilize them without any type of penalty. Currently, (as of an hour ago) I am 301 redirecting all of them to the most relative pages on a single domain. Will i get the majority of the link juice from the domains? I'm excited to see what will happen here. Thanks in advance, Daniel

Linkbuilding URL Problem
Hi, I work for Perfectly Engraved. A lot of our links point to http://www.perfectlyengraved.co.uk/. However that address forwards to - http://www.perfectlyengraved.co.uk/ecommerce/scripts/default.htm. Should we ensure our links point to http://www.perfectlyengraved.co.uk/ecommerce/scripts/default.htm or does it not make difference? I've put our forwarding code below. <%@ Language=VBScript %> <% Option explicit Response.Buffer = true Response.Redirect "http://www.perfectlyengraved.co.uk/ecommerce/scripts/default.htm" %> Also, would it help if we did a 301 redirect from http://perfectlyengraved.co.uk/ecommerce/scripts/default.htm to http://www.perfectlyengraved.co.uk/ecommerce/scripts/default.htm? As both addresses for every page on our site return the page with or without www Thanks

Does the url text count as anchor text in google's algo?
I always try to strive for getting good anchortext in links that people link to my sites with, but sometimes they are not very web savvy, or just plain not willing to format the link the way i want it and we end up with links that use the URL as the anchortext. My question is, if i format a url such that it has keywords in it, and when someone makes a link like this: http://www.storwell.com/self-storage-toronto-bursary-application-form.php does google consider the words: storwell, self, storage, toronto, bursary, application & form as the anchor text?
