How to get Google to choose office location pages and not the homepage. Tips and Suggestions?
-
Hello Mozzers
The issue I have is a client with a number of office locations (six) across the south of England and they want each to rank well for each location + the qualifier solicitors. IE Brighton Solicitors. Work has been undertaken on the office location pages to include the services offered from each location, full postcodes and phone numbers. These location pages are linked to from the footer of the website so have good internal links. The site has a DA of 49 and the office location pages have a PA of 33. Google in its wisdom keeps ranking the home pages for the searches. The result is that the site ranks well in one location (London) but poorly in all the majority of others (2nd,3rd and 4th page). Were it does pick up/choose the location page the rankings are better than the homepage. The other locations are less competitive than London according to the Keyword difficulty tool.
Any tips on to suggest to Google that it should rank the office location pages and not the homepage for each location? Thanks in advance

I agree with Miriam, make sure that you have enough citation strength/listing withing for each location, as well as making sure you're listing is linking to your individual location page on your site. This is by far the biggest differentiator in my experience.

Hey There,
Ultimately, it's up to Google to determine which page they consider is the authoritative result for a search, but in a multi-location scenario, here's how you can help them make your desired choice:
-
Be sure locations are NOT sharing phone numbers.
-
Be sure you have a unique, high quality landing page for each location. No thin, duplicate pages. Be sure the complete NAP is at the top of each of these pages.
-
Be sure the landing pages are being linked to from a top level menu.
-
Be sure ALL citations (including the GMB page) are linking to the correct website landing page for each location. Be sure none are just linking to the home page or some other wrong page of the site.
-
Be sure adequate citations have been built for each location on trusted platforms and that the NAP is consistent on each one.
-
Be sure there are no duplicate GMB pages for any of the locations, nor duplicate citations with bad/mixed-up data on other pages.
-
Very important, be sure all GMB listings you've created are guideline-compliant. Be aware of any violations and resolve them and also be aware of any past history of spammy behavior on the part of the business.
-
If all of this is already 100% perfect, see if you can make improvements to the internal linking structure and 3rd party links pointing to these landing pages.
Hope this helps!
P.S. This is Miriam posting, but I'm in Mozzer Alliance at the moment.

Hey highwayfive,
I've work with several multi-location businesses, and for the most part, achieve location pages outranking home page for geo related search queries. Here's a couple questions I'd have for you.
**Content **- How's the content on the location pages? Is it focused on the geo, ie directions, nearby landmarks, etc.
Links - You mentioned having links in the footer going to the location pages, however do you have any main body content links that make sense to link to location pages? For example, on the the service pages, if this service is only offered at one or two locations it would be a natural fit to link to them there. Footer links are great and a good way to get a wave of internal links, but main body editorial links seem to carry much more weight.
Google+/Citations - As Zoe mentioned, Do you have Google+ location pages for each location that link back to the location page (and the location page linking to the Google+ page)? How's the citation health for each location?
Best of luck, Ryan

Hi,
Thanks for your reply, that should help too, and opening hours for each business if they're not already there. Do you also have each location set up with its own location page on Google Plus? Having great citations across the rest of the web, with consistency for each location, should help too.
Good luck!

Thanks Zoe,
Each page has the full address and post code and have the primary search terms in the title, H1, meta description and page copy. I could add some alt.images tags to the map and I am trying to get them to produce some unique photos for each page as well.
-
Hi,
Have you added each pages' location to the Meta Title, H1 tag and within the body text of each relevant page?
Also, you could use your internal linking structure to indicate that your location pages are important. For example, ensure each has a prominent link on your homepage, a 'Locations' page and your contact page. You can also have sub-pages for each location, which all link back to the original location page. I see you say you've added postcodes- I'd also add the full addresses of each location.
Does the Solicitor's main name contain a location? This may be why it's confusing the search engines, but the above suggestions should improve this.
I hope this helps!

Google My Business: Company listing is showing in search instead of division address - similar names/same city
Hi! I have a client whose company name is very similar to one if their company divisions. This division has multiple locations but its main location is in the same city as the parent company. The problem is that when you search for the division, the parent company shows up. The parent company has a physical address, but most users searching need to be going to the division address which takes customers. They are having problems with customers coming to the parent company address instead. I have made the Google My Business parent company page to show service areas instead of their business address. Yet, their listing still comes up first when searching for the division location. This is because of part of the parent company name is in the division name. My client wants users to be able to find the division more so than the parent company. Anyone had this issue before? Any tips would be great!

Best Approach for GMB/Local Optimization for Central Office with Multiple Locations
Hello, Our site is designed to place people in different locations or houses. We have six locations total; each one has its own name, physical address and landing page. We also have a central office for the brand with its own NAP. All addresses fall under the guidelines of Google My Business (i.e. people visit each location and our office...etc.). Unless it’s ideal, we most likely wouldn’t be running a full-scale local campaign for each location due to restrictions on resources and wouldn’t want to spread ourselves too thin. Our question is; would it be best to set up a GMB listing for each location including our central office, only use the central office or just the 6 locations? – We know multiple locations is not an issue for GMB but we weren’t sure if that’s the ideal way to approach it in this case. Essentially, would it be better to focus on our central office for GMB/local efforts and just make sure that our other location landing pages are the highest quality possible or better to use GMB for every location (including the main office) and over time start local work on all of the above. Also, if we do only use just the central office; should we be avoiding listing the other addresses on each landing page to avoid confusing Google as to where we are located? Any help or insight on how to approach this would be very much appreciated. Looking forward to hearing from all of you! Thank you. Best,

I am having an issue with multiple Google local listings.
We assigned separate numbers for each local listing (using Call Tracking Metrics). However, recently our listings were suspended and when I read through terms of service it says the number has to match on the location page. We use dynamic numbers - so of course that number doesn't show up. Would it work to also add the local number to the page in addition to the dynamic number? Or has anyone figured out a work around?

Bad Google Reviews - Should I Remove the Map From My Website?
I have a Google map on a website. Currently, there are only two 1-star reviews — which show next to the company name on the map. We added the map for local SEO reasons, but I’m thinking I should take it down because customer experience supersedes local SEO. Why boost search rankings if the content will drive people away from converting? So basically, customer experience > local SEO. Question: Do you all agree, or do any of you have any evidence that I should leave it? For example, it’s below the fold, so it isn’t the first thing they see, and we really need to boost their local SEO.

???? "Google My Business", Search Console, Google Webmaster Tools
I added a Google+ Page for my business several years ago. Now when I click on "Search Console" within Webmaster Tools it is asking me to provide business information that I entered several years ago for Google+. Is this normal? Should I fill it out? It seems that this info is redundant with what I filled out for Google+. When I enter the name of my business (Metro Manhattan Office Space, Inc. ) in Google, a listing appears to the right, so it seems that Google already has my details. Thanks,

URL Structure and Keyword Focus for location page
Our company has around 1,700 locations across the country. These are contract shops mind you but still locations in which we will be placing pages for on our website. I have been browsing through all of the Local SEO blogs and trying to define the strategy for these. Here are a couple of outstanding questions I still have: 1. What should the URL structure of the page be for these locations? Keep in mind that there are some cities that have multiple locations in them so I can just do "/city/brand-keyword." I am thinking it should be "www.url.com/state/city/location-name"where the location name would for example "TXBrandName." 2. How should I structure the keyword focus for these pages? I am thinking that these pages will probably rank for some variations and should definitely include the city name although the search volume is very low. Currently I am thinking that they would be "keyword city – brand name." 3. How do we handle the shops that are contract and have a primary business already listed? We plan on listing them on GMB using "located inside of {business name}" on those that are contract shops. We originally considered using a suite# but one of the articles in Moz recommended not doing that. I just know that places like "Starbucks" and "Banfield" seem to use the "located inside of" without any issues. Any input would be greatly appreciated as we about to set all these up and I want to make sure we are setup for success as much as possible.

Why does my business does not appear on Google Maps ?
I recently created a Google + Profile for a client (I'm from Canada), even created a profile for Google Maps, received the code and my business is now verified. It's been nearly three weeks and the business still does not show or is even marked on Google Maps. I reviewed my profile to make sure I did not forget anything. I even contacted Google maps to suggest a change, nothing seems to work. Can anyone help me ? Thank you !

What are your experiences using the new Google Local Descriptor feature?
I'm looking for any insight from those who have used the Descriptor feature on your Places listings. Has it helped in any way? Caused issues? My issues with this feature are described in this question I posted the other day. But I haven't tried using the feature yet, and I'm hoping to learn from some of you who have.
