How to handle Local SEO when two businesses merge
-
Hi, I have a landscaping client who is buying another company and merging the two companies together. I trying to figure what the best way to handle this type of situation is. Here are the specifics.
Company A
- I've been working with him for a number of years, he has a really robust site with good content and with really good rankings. I've done a ton of citations, he's in good shape.
- His company has decent name recognition.
Company B
- My client is buying Company B.
- Their site is really poor, no SEO done on site and no directory listing work.
- The company has great name recognition in the community and gets most clients through word of mouth.
- My client has decided to take Company B's name because its a more well known company. He is going to merge the companies, because he doesn't want to have 2 companies from a management standpoint. He plans to keep both physical locations open.
So here are my questions.
- Do I keep both sites live for a period of time and put a message notifying people that "Company A is now Company B Name"? OR
- Do I transfer all the good content from Company A's site to Company B's site and do a 301 redirect of the URL.
- How should I handle the data aggregators and directory listings?
I'm trying to keep all the great natural traffic that Company A gets to its site, start to build traffic around company B's location while following all of Google's policies. I could just start over and in the long-term they'd be fine, but I really love to find a strategy to avoid my client taking a big hit in organic traffic. Thanks in advance Mozzers!

Hi John,
Hmm, that does make it a bit tougher, having to put everything on the weaker domain, but I see what you mean in regards to having to go that way for branding purposes. I'm reaching out to one of our traditional SEO experts on staff for additional feedback on this. Please, check back.

Hi John,
To add to what Miriam was saying, you can still redirect the stronger domain to the weaker one. You will lose out on a bit of link value but it won't crush your ranking potential. You can conduct the 301 at any time (before or after building the strength of the weaker site). The main issue is to make sure you have the foundation in place for a smooth redirect whenever you decide to do so. That being said, I would suggest the 301 should be conducted before further SEO work continues.
To do this, all you really need to do is provide the same site architecture for Site A and Site B, then redirect page-to-page. After this is complete, SEO to your heart's content on Site B.
You can do it the other way, but it will take more time and you will have to maintain 2 domains while the merge is occurring which might get messy - just depends on the time frame your client has provided.
Hope this helps!
Rob

Thanks Miriam, your expertise is greatly appreciated! I agree that Option 2 makes the most sense. The only issue that I see is that the stronger website has the company name in the URL, and that company name is being eliminated. I am basically left with the weaker sites domain name because that will be the company name going forward. Any tips to make a smooth transition bringing the content over? Do I strengthen the site first then work on bringing the content over at the end?

Hi John,
So, if I'm understanding correctly, both companies will now be named Company B, but there will remain 2 distinct physical locations. You have 2 options here, that I can see:
Option 1
Make a legal business name change so that you have Company B Boston and Company B Philadelphia as the legal names of the 2 companies and run them separately. Keep the 2 websites, being sure that the NAP on Company B Boston is only on site #1 and that the NAP on Company B Philadelphia is only on site #2. Do not share phone numbers or any other part of the NAP. Edit all citations accordingly.
This option will allow you to maintain the 2 websites and, hopefully, build up the strength of the poorer site over time.
Option 2
This is likely the better option. Name both companies Company B. Bring any good content aboard from the poorer website and then redirect the poorer website to the stronger one. Create a unique landing page on the new, consolidated website for City A and City B, ensuring that the addresses and phone numbers are unique. Edit the citations so that all of them for location A point to the City A landing page and that all of them for location B point to the City B landing page.
This option allows you to go with a single website, single brand and means all of the future work you do is going toward building up the authority of a single, very strong company.
Hope this advice is helpful!

Local News or National News backlinking?
Hello guys, I got an two offers, one from national newspaper and one from local newspaper (both online and printed editions, but here is online edition relevant.) to write about my company because we had some remarkable results in our niche. They would write a text about 2.000 words long and put a backlink to my website with the anchor text of my choice! The national newspaper has DA 49, whereas local newspaper has DA 39 but comes from the same city where we are based and writes just about the specific city and district in this city. Which one would you choose for your SEO?

Google My Business Question
I work for a large organization with a number of locations. There is a Google My Business listing for us, under our umbrella name, that lists an old address (building we no longer occupy) and says that we are "permanently closed". I believe this is an unverified listing because there is an "own this listing?" link in it. In order to take control of the listing, Google gives us three options: call, text or snail mail. The number is an automated line so calling and texting aren't going to work and snail mail wouldn't work b/c we're no longer in the building. Anyone know how we can take control of this listing so that it doesn't look like we're "permanently closed?"

Is the new local 3-pack the death of Google+ as factor?
So now we have the new 3-pack local results, which obviously cut the listings Google+ link from the results. What I find strange is that is now even when searching the business name alone, there is no sign of the associated Google+ page in the results. I still get other local third party listings like Facebook, Yellowpages, and Yelp – but no link anywhere for the Google+ page. I noticed this today when I wanted to verify something on a client’s page. There was nothing I could do search wise to bring up this business Google+ page. I finally got it by clicking the link through Moz local. After exploring this with some other clients, when I do get a Google+ page in the search results some have produced a 500 error when clicked on. If Google wasn’t killing off Google+, why would they completely omit the pages from their own search results? Another extremely strange thing, the majority of my clients are independent local businesses inside a large national company. Their Google+ listings have always been managed corporately using a bulk listing feed. We could never gain access to these pages and would always manage our listings to match that of the corp. controlled page. Well the last week of July they announced they were giving us the option to take control of the page. This happened with two different companies, MAJOR national competitors in the same industry, within a couple days of each other. They now treat it just like another version of social media, instead of a major factor within search. I find it hard to believe that something isn’t going on…

Local link building
Hi, I am looking to ask for peoples experience on getting local links and the best and most successful approaches made. Let's say we have a local sports physiotherapist and wants to engage with local sports clubs, running clubs, etc.. What are the best methods for an agency to deploy to try and build relationships and links. Our client may have treated some of the local sports club members but as an agency we may not have the specifics. What success have Marketing agencies got with emails, telephone, site visits etc in order to assist with building good quality relevant links. What success do you have with offering discounts to build links or promoting competitions and offering guest blogging at a local level. Are there other tactics, such as linkedIn or engaing on other social channels. It would be nice to find out others experiences what ever the business sector for building local links. Many thanks in advance to all those who contribute.

Transferring SEO services from one agency to another - troubles, concerns, etc.?
Hey Moz Community, I have a friend I'm asking for who has an agency and will be taking over SEO from another agency. One thing that worries me is that the agency has confirmed dozens of locations in Google Places (about 60-100) for this business. How would you transfer Google Places ownership (assuming they cooperate)? Could the previous agency delete these listings? If so, how would that affect Local SEO? For example, the location and phone number is already on the website. Isn't that good enough for all of these locations (about 100)? I hope this is clear; please let me know if not. I would be interested in hearing any other feedback about moving agencies. Thanks, Cole

Yahoo Local Basic Listing Verifications Failing
Hey everyone, Over the last few weeks Yahoo Local's Basic Listings have been failing left and right for me. When working to verify a business listing, I have been trying the phone, snail mail and email verifications specifically, and am 100% sure I've been inputting the correct code, yet no matter how many attempts I make, I get the following error: http://i.imgur.com/pJ7ggBx.jpg This is for multiple accounts, not just a single instance. Seems Yahoo's just got an unfixed, prevalent bug. I've reached out to their Support for information, but they have been unresponsive. Anyone else running into this issue?

Unable to verify my google local listing page by phone verification.
Hi, I have created the Google local listing page for my business site. I want to verify it using the phone verification but there is only a option - "verify by postcard". Is there no option to verify it using a phone number? Help needed.

How can I manually build local citations for a client?
Note: I am not interested in paying for services to build citations for me. I am managing building a client's citations. On many sites I am asked to create an account and verify my information. I have tried to create accounts using my client's email address and specified password so that they can manage their citations down the road should their NAP change. However, many sites require further verification such as security questions or a phone code. It isn't practical or effective to ask a client to confirm and verify all of these accounts. What is the most effective way to manually build local citations for a client? How can I get around the issue of email and phone verification?
