Why does OSE show different link equity for homepage with and without trailing slash?
-
Hi all,
I am working with a developer who believes OSE (Open Site Explorer) is flawed. His reasoning is that OSE shows completely different link equity and domain authority for these two URLs [company name is purposely withheld]:
and
NOTE: http://www.mydomain.com/us has been properly 301-redirecting to http://www.mydomain.com/us/ for years.
The developer's argument is that the URL that is being 301-redirected shouldn't have any link equity at all, therefore OSE is flawed.
Here is the response I would like to give him. Please feel free to poke holes, provide feedback or flat out correct me if I am wrong:
Dear inquisitive developer,
Any URL that is being linked to by another site that has link equity will get link equity passed to it. This is true even if the URL is a page that doesn't exist. What it can't do (if it doesn't exist) is then pass that link equity on to another page. Moz's OSE is showing separate link equity for the two versions of this URL because other sites have linked to both versions. The fact that one 301-redirects to the other is good and ensures that link equity from one is passing to the preferred URL. The 301-redirect does not, however, remove link equity from the first URL, but rather passes the existing link equity from one to the other.
Consequently, Moz's OSE is not flawed, but rather is displaying the link equity of one URL that is benefiting the other via a 301-redirect.
Sincerely,
Dana

You've explained this beautifully, the last 3 sentences specifically.

OSE - Link Opportunities
I'm checking out this new Link Opportunities feature for one of our sites and what I'm seeing right now is pretty disappointing. For Reclaim Links, everything listed is an internal link on our site. It's got tons of URLs from our old Iciniti structure (replatformed to Magento mid-March). It's crawling tons of stuff that's blocked in robots. There are no links from external domains in the first 5 pages. For Unlinked Mentions, it's showing tons of mentions - 33,566 to be exact, a ridiculous number - mostly from news sites like Forbes, WSJ, Guardian, CNN, etc. These sites are not mentioning us. It's set up to look only for our brand name or domain name, so I don't know how it's thinking there are all these nonexistent mentions. What's going on with Link Opportunities?

Does Open Site Explorer recognise nofollow links?
In the backlink profile for my site on OSE, I'm seeing a lot of links that are paid advetorials and I know go through DoubleClick. I was informed that links going through Doubleclick automatically become NoFollow links. If the above is true, should I ignore these links? If they are NoFollow, they don't really contribute to my backlink profile? THANKS!

Removing the clutter of site-wide links
I have a multi-part question with regard to the moz link index and some presentation suggestions. Firstly I would be interested to know how the link index treats site-wide links with regard to metrics such as DA, and PA. We all know that it is highly likely that SE's are unlikely to pass full link value across from sitewide links, and therefore it would make sense for Moz values to account for this as well - if they do not already. One annoying thing that also relates to sitewides is that they tend to clutter the much of the information presentation in a few of the tools (you can't see wood for trees as it were). This is most prominent in the "Just Discovered" page - if you have a sitewides on a large site, you can often find that this screen is just totally filled with these links as they are found. It would be very useful to be able to filter these out, as they are of little interest - currently I can't see a way of filtering them out. A further value where they create to much noise is the 'Total Links' value. Where sitewides are included in this value, the value actually becomes pretty meaningless as you can find that the majority of that value is sitewides. It would therefore be useful if there was another value for 'Total Links - Excluding Sitewides' where maybe value of 1 was just added to the count for a site wide

Need advice on creating link report
I am trying to create a new report that will show the effectiveness of each link source in terms of delivering traffic and how quality that traffic is with regard to conversions.... With that, I want to know how I can first get a list of all external links to any page on my subdomain and then align that list with traffic/conversion data in Google Analytics. Can someone provide me step by step instructions on this? I assume I would start with Open Site Explorer and export the list of external links to pages on my subdomain. My issue lies in how to get the same general list out of GA that lines up with the urls in the OSE export. I have tried referrals, but that does not give me a compatible list.

Expired domains and OSE?
If a domain expires will it remain in OSE indefinitely and show external backlinks? Or at some point does the domain get removed from OSE?
