How do I set-up a 301 redirect?
-
Moz alerted me to two 404 errors on our website. I am now trying to place a 301 redirect on them. How would I go about accomplishing?
-
Redirect 301 /registerlogin-2/ http://everlastingchanges.com/registerlogin-3/
But please - remove "scheduling" from main homepage that doesn't exist anymore.

This should be a suitable guide for you http://www.yourhtmlsource.com/sitemanagement/urlrewriting.html
-
The other is everlastingchanges.com/registerlogin-2/
-
Yes, one is http://everlastingchanges.com/scheduling...

Have you got your url? I'll be able to tell you how to do a redirect with that information.
-
Hey Harvey, I appreciate the response. However, I have already read through that information and was unable to locate the exact answer on how to redirect. I was given more information on what is a redirection, url, etc.

If you have 404 somewhere inside of your site there is only one way to fix them - fixing URLs. So if on page A i have link to page B that doesn't exist. Robots will crawl page A and seeing about presence of page B. But on checking page B robots will get 404. So it's much better to fix page A to link to page C that exists. And this is for internal sites.
If you have incoming links to 404. Site A page B link to your site X page Y. Since you can't fix page B then you can make 301 redirect on your website and redirect page Y to page Z that exist.
If you have outgoing links to 404. Then try to find update URL/site if they still exist. If doesn't exist anymore try to find replacement or redirect to archive.org. Or update your page that this doesn't exists anymore.
301 redirects are quick to fix with Apache and it's .htaccess. All you need is just to make somewhere line as:
Redirect 301 /dir/page.htm http://www.example.com/new-dir/new-page.html
Redirect 301 /dir/subdir/page.htm http://www.example.com/new-dir/new-subdir/new-page.php
of course this is example and you need to edit them for your specific case. You also must watch http access log for 404s. -

How to resolve recurring 302 redirects?
In my Moz site crawl there is a fluctuating number of 302 redirect pages that don't physically exist - most are through a 'compare product' option. The number of 302s varies significantly by how many pages Rogerbot has crawled - the more pages crawled, the higher the number of 302s, so I'm pretty sure it's the 'compare product' that's causing the issue. I can't find a way to remove the compare product button so I need another way to resolve it. I can;t canonicalise the pages as they don't exist as such. Does anyone have any ideas?

SEO and page redirects from a high ranking site quandary
We are launching a site on a new domain that is taking the place of a group (subset) of pages in an existing domain. BUT The pages on the existing domain have really good SEO rankings in a very competitive category and we want to leverage the traffic it gets today in the best way, so.... Which of the following would be the best practice in this case (in regards to SEO)? Modify the existing pages' content so that there are prominent calls to action that lead the users to the new domain. Create permanent redirects for the existing pages for their counterparts on the new domain. This is more direct for the user but we don't know how it will affect the current ranking. Something other than the above. Many thanks for you help Gary

Fixing temporary redirects
Hi all, I recently had an issue whereby the Moz crawl was showing up thousands of instances of duplicate content. I solved (or so I thought) this issue on a Magento-based eCommerce website by enabling canonical URL tagging on product pages and category landing pages. This reduced the instances of duplicate content dramatically (by the thousands!) however it created a new issue of thousands of temporary redirects. All of the research I have done has suggested that I should be setting these as permanent redirects somehow, but I am not sure how to do this or how to resolve this issue. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much. Josh

I did a redirect and now I'm getting duplication errors.
I was told by SEO Moz to do a redirect so that our website would be crawled with and without the www in front of the address. I did and now I'm getting duplicate page and title errors because the crawler is seeing www.oursitename.com and its underpages and oursitename.com and its underpages and giving me duplicate page content errors and duplicate page title errors. Makes sense, but how do I make it stop? Anyone else have this problem?

Old Incoming Links Redirected to new pages are not Being Factored on the Open Site Explorer
Hi, My website has been online since 1994. We have old links pointing to pages that no longer exist so what we have done is to create redirects to the specific page where the content is being displayed now. However, when we use the Open Site Explorer, the linking root domains do not show those sites that contain old links pointing to our domain. One good example of this one is: dmoz.org. Am I improperly handling the redirects? Or, what do I have to do so that old links that are being redirected to the new pages where the information is are accounted when calculating domain authority and trust? Thanks, Alex

Is Open Site Explorer ignoring 301 redirects now?
I just recently saw a huge decline in the page rank of a specific page on my site. When I investigated a bit further I noticed that the drop in page rank looks like it is due to the fact that most of the links to the page come through 301 re-directs from an old page. I know you just made a change to Open Site Explorer. Did you change the way that you are treating 301 re-directs? Here is the new page: http://www.justjen.com/shop/big-sister-tshirts.htm Here is the old page: http://www.justjen.com/shop/bigsister-tshirts.htm Up until the last couple of days, the new page was showing the links from the old page in your cache, but as of today, the new page is only showing the links that go to it, not the links to the old page that is re-directed to it. If there was a change recently, was this intentional (trying to replicate the search engines better) or is it an oversight or database anomaly?

Can I see backlinks to a specific URL, not including redirects?
Does SEOMoz have a tool that allows me to see backlinks to a specific URL sans redirected URLs? So, URL is www.website.com/search. www.website.com redirects to www.website.com/search and I want to see how many people have linked to the /search, the resulting URL. Thanks for any help! Erin
