Quick Q for your (local) SEO gurus.
I have a client who has bought a number of local companies. (advertising, printing, graphic design, vehicle wraps) to compliment his screen printing, embroidery, etc business. ALL of these companies run out of the SAME address.
What makes it even harder is he wants to continue operating them as separate companies. Fortunately, he is OK with using different phone numbers for each business but on the website (we are building for him) ALL the companies are represented like it is all one big happy company.
How the H@#$ do I build citations for this business! ??? THANK YOU FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS!!
If I use the one 'parent' company building citations is a challenge bcs they do so MANY things in one location. If I try and build citations for 5 companies w the same address - that can't be a good idea either.
If the plan is to eventually fold all these companies into the one parent company *(waiting to hear back on that) I would think the BEST advice would be to use the ONE phone number and address and just shoot for a general 'marketing' category.
Thanks for any thoughts!!
Matthew

Hi Matthew!
Good question! Best advice: build just one website and one set of citations for this business. What you are describing sounds to me (and would likely sound to Google) like a single business in a single physical location that has purchased other businesses in order to expand its menu of services.
Unless the business genuinely has unique forward-facing departments (like a hospital campus with one dept. for X-ray and another for ER) then the client would be taking a needless risk trying to promote the business as though it were 5, 6 different companies all in that same building.
Remember that Google reads street-level imaging. Should they take a look at the building's signage and see Big Guy Marketing on the sign, but see that the owner is also listing Little Guy Printing, Medium Guy Car Wraps and Funny Guy Graphics in his Google My Business dashboard all in that same building, Google would rightly have cause to be suspicious that they are being spammed, by a single marketing company trying to look like multiple businesses.
The good news here is that the owner is already wishing to consolidate. He should do so, and then you and he can both focus on building out one really awesome brand with a powerful, diverse menu of services (but just one set of citations)!
Hope this helps!

Hi Matthew,
Unfortunately, without diverging addresses this is going to be very difficult to accomplish. The only option might be if you can create sub-addresses (i.e. Unit #1, Unit #2, etc.) for each of the businesses and represent them separately with citations.
I ran into a similar situation for an auto dealer I was working for last year. Basically had a garage and a dealership (separate businesses, same address, same owners) identified in their citation profile. We confused the heck out of Google to the extent they were removed from Map Pack listings. We switched to form 1 company from the 2 brands and lo and behold - back to 1st Place.
If your client absolutely will not bring all these companies under 1 name or brand, the best bet is to take the most wide-reaching of them in terms of services offered and promote that one. I would strongly urge him or her to make the move to a single business, however, as local rankings will suffer if he/she continues this way.
Alternatively, if there is a way to set up separate mailing addresses (the unit solution listed above) that is an option. However, it seems like a lot of unnecessary work for both you and your client.
Lastly, it would depend on if the business is dependent on Local SEO. If they are counting on Map Pack listings and Local search, then this is a priority. If they have a national service area, citations become less important obviously.
Hope this helps to clarify a little bit and sorry I can't be more help. Let me know if you have any follow ups and I'll give it my best shot.
Best regards,
Rob

What city to use for citations?
Hey everyone, I have a question about what city to use for citations in this case. My client is a service-area business in the Seattle area. The business is home-based, in Everett, WA, which if you’re not familiar is in the northern part of the Seattle metro area. They only serve clients outside the home. For their GBP that’s no problem, as of course their address isn’t shown. For all the citations we’ll be building though, I’m not entirely sure what we should do. The client does not want their street address anywhere online. So, since their city won't be listed on their GBP, should we still use Everett as the city for all the citations, or should we use Seattle? I'm unsure here because with some citations you have to list a full address, and then you're able to hide the street address later. And since they don't technically have a Seattle address, I'm not if that would be the way to go. But I’m wondering because no one will be searching for “[service] in Everett”, they would search for “[service] in Seattle”. What do you think?

Help with Yelp for Brands :)
I want to restructure our franchise Yelp accounts, I am looking for an easier way to deploy Yelp accounts that are structured at a brand level where I can add franchisees as managers but still be able to look at Yelp at a brand account short of advertising of course. We have over 380 locations each with their own accounts and ad goals. Is this possible? Does it have a method like Google My Business or Bing Places? It's not a priority for us since we first claim and optimize this for all of our franchisees, Just looking for an easier way to help your franchisees with deployments, scale and also helping us keep a consistent brand standard. Cheers, JonGeek

NAP Questions
Hello Moz Community, I recently found out that one of my client's actual business name on paper has spacing and does not have that many capitalized words (ex. BlahBlahCity is the current NAP, however on paper it's actually Blahblah City). After readying the guidelines for representing your business on Google I started to worry that this may be holding us back from ranking in the local 3 pack. Here's the blurb from the guideline: Fully capitalized words (with the exception of acronyms) or unnecessary spaces. Not acceptable: "SUBWAY" Acceptable: "Subway", "KFC", "IHOP", "JCPenney" Is this a big issue or can I leave it as is? Another issue that I believe is holding us back was the google my business name he has for his multiple locations. His 2 locations have the city next to the business name. example: BlahBlahCity City#1 BlahBlahCity City#2 I know here I do need to remove the city from the business name, however when it comes to citations can google tell that it is 2 different locations and not think it's duplicate?

Is it possible to use sub URLs in Citations?
Hello, One of my client has business in 5 different locations so he has URL's like: "www.abc.com/city-service" for which he has listing verified in each location. I can certainly say that Google Business allow sub pages URL in citations (correct me if I am wrong). I am not sure if it is possible to use the sub URL's like: www.abc.com/city-service in different citations websites? Also, if this would be a good approach or not? Please help me. Sam

Google keeps updating/tweaking my Local business branch addresses ? to whats different in my citations and on page. how can I stop it?
Hi All, I have a number of branches as we have separate branch pages and separate google local listings for these. I have been trying to keep them in consistent for citation purposes but google keeps trying to tweak the address in the local listings. Sometimes for example , google is trying to remove the premises number from the Road e.g 78 Doncaster Road is the actual branch address but google local business wants it as Doncaster Road, I also see Google is wanting to sometimes remove the locality name etc?.. Also If the local listing has a county ( in America - you would have State) , google is sometimes wanting to remove this add United Kingdom in Country instead ?. Is this a problem and how to deal with it as I think this is obviously impacting my local rankings?. If i approve all these changes then do I need update all my citations and page addresses all the time ? Or can I just leave the suggested "Update" or overwrite googles suggestion with what I had originally. Does anyone else have this problem ? thanks pete

Google Places Question
Hello All, I have an Ecommerce website with a number of different depots which customers can pick products up from. I have created a Google Places listing for each of my depots. My website has a unique page for each of my Locations. Should I have a link from the individual website location pages to the corresponding Google Places Page ?.. Currently I only have a link from the Google Places page back to the website Location Page ? Should the images I have in my google Places listings contain the relevant Location name in the image file names ? Is there any useful pointers for SEO tuning for google places or articles anyone could recommend ?.. thanks Sarah

Why does it take so long for citations to get listed?
I understand that several citation places take over a month to get listed, but I just don't understand why. Granted, there's nothing I can do about it, but I'm just curious what the hold up is based on. Thanks, Ruben
