How to address reviews that show up in Google but come from a business's own website?
-
One of my clients has a competitor who has a fairly poor reputation based on reviews on Google and Yelp. But, this competitor allows people to review them on their own website, and their "4.8" rating based on 250+ "reviews" show up in search engine results. I assume they are using schema markup to encourage that. My question is whether there is anything we can do to report this to Google, or otherwise make sure the general public is not fooled by these reviews?

I think that if you want to call this vendor dishonest you need to delve deeply into how the Reviewability service works, learn enough about it that any reasonable person would consider you to be an expert on how their system works, and then come to a conclusion that is firm enough to present in court.
Many review services allow vendors to contest reviews, place reviews on hold while disputes are being settled, hand-pick the reviews that they will display on their website, show only reviews above a certain score, and more. These are frequently-employed practices that any vendor can adopt - if they subscribe to a review service or not.
It is always good to back your clients when you have solid information. In many instances, weasel hunts are best turned over to attorneys.

Thanks for the response. The competitor is using a service called Reviewability. On their policy page, they say that "The review may optionally then be posted to the subscriber's website." at the discretion of the subscriber. So they can post all the good reviews, and hide the others. http://reviewability.com/review-policy/
Given that policy, do you have any further thoughts on the matter?

Keep in mind that there are many different kinds of reviews. Each of them attract a different type of reviewer.
If your competitor is using a third-party review collection system - even if it is on their own site - the reviews that they receive might be legitimate. By that, a 4.8 out of 250 visitors says that they have done a good job.
Lots of the people who go straight to Yelp or Google+ could be trolls who run there and complain about anything. They might not even be customers. They might be evil competitors - or even evil clients.
So, it is important to consider the platform, the numbers, the methods before making any judgement.

Hi Ira,
It's a very good question and it is currently a way that companies are trying to "Cheat the system". From what I have experienced in the past, the company in question are just making the best of Schema as it is meant to be used. For this reason they are theoretically not doing anything wrong in Google's eyes.
If there reviews are genuine then there is no reason why they can not be used and your client is within their right to use the same tactic.
If you are genuinely worried that this client is doing something wrong or unethical/fraudulent I would give Google a call directly and raise it with one of the technical team. I would mention that you have seen the site using this and provide them with the example, just explain that you are thinking of using the technique but you wanted to check first that you are not doing anything wrong.
The team at Google on phone support are great and they have always been able to help with any questions I have had in the past.
I hope that helps, good luck finding a solution.

Any experiences with Reviews.io?
Hello, We have used Trustpilot.com for a few years in the past. Service was reasonable and they did what they were supposed to do. However, due to their price and requirement for a full-year payment upfront we stopped using their review collection service. Is someone using Reviews.io? They are included in Google Review Partners, which seems to be very encouraging:

Any experiences you could share about Reviews.io will be appreciated. Luciano, The Translation Company Group0 -

Will adding schema markup to copied Google reviews show up in organic search?
Google no longer favors my client's industry with Google reviews in local Snack Pack results, but a national competitor has markup for site-based reviews that are showing up in organic results, which is a big, shiny, advantage. Rather than have to solicit reviews in two places (Google and the site), I'm wondering if it would be possible/advisable to copy and paste the Google reviews into the site and mark them up there, in an attempt to get Google to feature the rating in the organic SERP result? I don't know if this would work though, since I'm guessing part of the reason that Google accepts the competitor reviews is because they are verified purchases, which wouldn't be possible just cutting and pasting. But is it worth a try? It's too bad though, Google is effectively only showing handpicked, "national" reviews, which does local customers a disservice. Thank you!

How does decimal rounding of reviews to stars work in ios appstore? Starting from which average review score to get full 5 star rating?
How does decimal rounding of reviews to stars work in ios appstore?

Starting from which average review score to get full 5 star rating? Duolingo has a 5 star rating, but I doubt that they really have an all time review average larger than 4,75. In the google playstore their average of the android version is 4,6. Does anybody know how apple calculates the star ratings or has an URL reference where this is explained?0 -
Customers can review business on New Google Plus
Google Plus for businesses has switched to a new Google+ page that does not have a "WRITE A REVIEW" button available for customers to leave a review for a business. This is preventing us from sending a link to our Google Plus business page directly to customers soliciting a review for our business. Has anyone else noticed this update migration and does anyone have a work around for how to send a link to our customers so they can leave a review on our Google+ business page?

Have You Influenced Google's "Reviews From Around the Web"?
This seems like a frustration for many who do SEO for local business. The Google Plus aggregation of reviews is vaguely created and out of our control. Or is it? The most I can find about it is at: https://support.google.com/business/answer/3474120?hl=en&ref_topic=6109351 I have clients in the accommodation industry who are reviewed thoroughly on similar sites to one another. Some of these clients have 100+ "Reviews From Around the Web" where as others are stuck at one or two reviews. My thoughts are that the business name, address, and phone details would allow Google to link the review with the local listing. I'm not sure and doubt this is just the case because the low-review listings have consistent NAP details. Have you been able to get reviews aggregating for a local business in their Google Plus?

Outrank Warriorforum.com review
Hi Everyone, When you search our company name we dominate the first page with site links and our social links. Recently a Warriorforum.com review jumped to the third position from a post back in Oct. Thankfully it's a good review, but I would prefer if the site wasn't #3. We recently published a Wikipedia article that was approved with the intent to get it ranked in the first page. Do you have any other thoughts on how to outrank those review sites? Right now the SERP looks like: 1. Company Website with 6 sitelinks

2. Company Twitter link
3. Warriorforum.com Review
4. News about our Company
5. Company Youtube
6. Company Facebook
7. Company LinkedIn
8. Third party review Thank you!0
