What sort of knowledge differentiates a good SEO from a great SEO?

This is definitely more of a discussion than a clear cut answer.

First and foremost, you want to avoid SEOs who don't understand Google's Webmaster Guidelines. Now, that might sound like a stupid requirement because "doesn't every SEO understand the webmaster guidelines?" Fact is, they don't and that is why huge numbers of websites are suffering from Panda, Penguin and other penalties. In many cases their SEOs did that to them because they built spammy links, made spammy content, etc. Hiring an SEO is like picking up a snake and hoping that it isn't a rattler. Be careful and know your snakes and understand webmaster guidelines so you can look at the work that the SEO is doing for you and determining if it is going to get you into trouble.
Next, there are lots of SEOs who will take on any job at any budget. You might go to one of them unknowing the competitive level of your websites niche and tell the SEO that you have $5000 per month to spend.... and your niche is "digital cameras". Your SEO needs to gauge the cost and methods of becoming competitive in that niche and bring your site into the money and earn a positive return sometime before your funeral. Digital cameras? Is that a $500 per month or a $5,000 per month or a $50,000 per month or a $500,000 per month attack? If the SEO accepts you at $500 or $5000 per month then that SEO probably doesn't know what it is really going to take to become competitive in that niche, or he just cares about milking you for your money month after month and just stinging you along for as long as he can. Here you have ignorant SEOs who will take your money and work for you not knowing that the amount you are paying isn't enough to fund a proper attack. Then you have the ones you don't have the integrity or the courage to turn down paying work even if they know that the budget isn't enough to move the needle. They just want your money.

SEO Template Recommendations - example provided but would welcome any advice
Hi there, I'm trying to improve the templates used on our website for SEO pages aimed at popular search terms. An example of our current page template is as follows: http://www.eteach.com/teaching-jobs Our designers have come up with the following new template: http://www.eteach.com/justindaviesnovemeber I know that changing successful pages can be risky. One concern is putting links behind JQuery, where the 'More on Surrey' link is. Does anyone had any strong suggestions or observations around our new template? Especially through the eyes of Google! Thanks in advance Justin

Negative SEO campaign just started against my site. What do I do?
As the question says, I have just got alerts of new links, being clearly a negative seo campaign against my site. We are talking, lots of spammy, rude anchor text type keywords being used. Whilst I only have alerts of a small number (around 30), it has just happened and I know from the type of spammy links they are that more will be coming. So, question is, should I disavow? Do I keep submitting new disavows every few days as more are discovered? Any advice will be greatly be appreciated.

Question about local SEO when you serve many more cities than you have brick and mortar locations
My URL is: http://www.mollysmusic.org for the record.I run a music school that serves in-home lessons to a whole slew of cities. Since I only have 3 brick-and-mortar locations, I can't make google local profiles for all the cities served, but I want to get seen by those people searching in their own cities. Right now, our biggest competitor, takelessons.com, is top ranked for every single city you can think of, because they have individual web pages for every city served. Their content is repetitive and scrapey, and to me, that says "doorway page" which supposedly can get you de-indexed. I'm reluctant to do that because I'm afraid I'll get banned, but I have to compete. I also want a strategy that can scale when we move into new areas. Is there something that makes TakeLessons's content NOT a doorway page? What's the best practice for getting ranked in multiple individual cities if you run a service? Thanks in advance.

Negative SEO on my website with paid +1's
Hi guys, I need a piece of advice. Some scumbag played me quite well with paid +1's on my two articles and now I'm in a problem.

http://sr.stateofseo.com/napredni-seo/najnovije-promene-google-panda-algoritma/
They are both translated articles (written originally by me on the same website). I've noticed those +1's (476 on both articles) when my website received a penalty for "SEO" keyword on Google.rs (Serbian Google) and I'm now on the 11th page.
Other keywords still rank just fine. Not cool, right? Now, I think there could be two solutions:
First one is to remove my inner link that's pointing to my homepage with "SEO" anchor, and hope for the best. Second one is to completely remove/delete those two articles and wait for Google to reindex the website and hopefully remove my ban. Do you guy have some other ideas how can I fix this or remove / disavow those +1 or somehow explain to the Google crew / algo that I'm just a humble SEO without any evil thoughts? 🙂 Thank you in advance.0 -
Any e-commerce users recommend an SEO company for link building?
I manage an e-commerce site. I wanted to know if anyone has worked with an SEO company for link-building that they would recommend. I DO NOT want articled directories, bookmarks, etc.. I want real link-building from credible/related sites. If you would give me an idea of the results or the general process they use I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance.
