Sitemap Rules
-
Hello there,
I have some questions pertaining to sitemaps that I would appreciate some guidance on.
1. Can an XML sitemap contain URLs that are blocked by robots.txt? Logically, it makes sense to me to not include pages blocked by robots.txt but would like some clarity on the matter i.e. will having pages blocked by robots.txt in a sitemap, negatively impact the benefit of a sitemap?
2. Can a XML sitemap include URLs from multiple subdomains? For example:
http://www.example.com/www-sitemap.xml would include the home page URL of two other subdomains i.e. http://blog.example.com/ & http://blog2.example.com/
Thanks

Theoretically, if the URL is blocked by robots.txt it should not appear in the index results no matter if they are in the sitemap but I have seen URLs indexed that are blocked by robots.txt but are in the sitemap and have good links pointing to it. If you want to block pages that have good links pointing to them, my advice is to remove them from sitemap. #justathought.
About URLs from multiple domains, I personally create separate sitemaps for different subdomains and link to main sitemap and I see better indexing that way.
Again, these are my personal experiences and not rules so please do keep that in mind as things can be different fro them.

Hey,
1.) Yes you can do this and it won't 'negativel impact it' but it might cause a couple of Search Console errors when you come to submit the URLs - blocking crawlers in the robots.txt file is a directive that instructs them not to crawl that particular page. With this being said, supplying them with a sitemap of all page locations will not mean that they crawl these pages, but it is an instruction to crawlers that these pages do exist. Personally, I would meta noindex these pages to make sure that they don't reach search engines as the blocking in the robots.txt file can often not be enough to prevent this, especially if you're also submitting a sitemap.
2.) In short, I don't think you can have a single XML sitemap containing URLs from multiple subdomains BUT you can have sitemaps for multiple subdomains hosted on the TLD individually. Google have broken this down really well in their Webmaster Tools post:

Hope this helps!

Sitemap
I have a question for the links in a sitemap. Wordpress works with a sitemap that first link to the different kind of pages: pagesitemap.xml categorysitemap.xml productsitemap.xml etc. etc. These links on the first page are clickable. We have a website that also links to the different pages but it's not clickable, just a flat link. Is this an issue?

How to manually create sitemap with 301 redirrctions?
Hi there I've just redirected a few of my pages (created in Dreamweaver) using the PHP Redirect function, I am wondering how do I create a manual sitemap to submit to Google to reflect this or will Google pick it up automatically based on the below? Example:

Automate XML Sitemaps
Quick question, which is the best method that people have for automating sitemaps. We publish around 200 times a day and I would like to make sure as soon as we publish it gets updated in the site map. What is the best method of updating a sitemap so it gets updated immediately after it is published.

Removing images from site and Image Sitemap SEO advice
Hello again, I have received an update request where they want me to remove images from this site (as of now its a bunch of thumbnails) current page design: http://1stimpressions.com/portfolio/car-wraps/ and turn it into a new design which utilized a slider (such as this): http://1stimpressions.com/portfolio/ They don't want the thumbnails on the page anymore. My question is since my site has a image sitemap that has been indexed will removing all the images hurt my SEO greatly? What would the recommended steps to take to reduce any SEO damage be, if so? Thank you again for your help, always great and very helpful feedback! 🙂 cheers!

Using Sitemap Generator - Good/Bad?
Hi all I recently purchased the full licence of XML Sitemap Generator (http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/standalone-google-sitemap-generator.html) but have yet used it. The idea behind this is that I can deploy the package on each large e-commerce website I build and the sitemap will be generated as often as I set it be and the search engines will also be pinged automatically to inform them of the update. No more manual XML sitemap creation for me! Now it sounds great but I do not know enough about pinging search engines with XML sitemap updates on a regular basis and if this is a good or bad thing? Can it have any detrimental effect when the sitemap is changing (potentially) every day with new URLs for products being added to the site? Any thoughts or optinions would be greatly appreciated. Benefits to having an HTML sitemap?
We are currently migrating our site to a new CMS and in part of this migration I'm getting push-back from my development team regarding the HTML sitemap. We have a very large news site with 10s of thousands of pages. We currently have an HTML sitemap that greatly helps with distributing PR to article pages, but is not geared towards the user. The dev team doesn't see the benefit to recreating the HTML sitemap despite my assurance that we don't want to lose all these internal links since removing 1000s of links could have a negative impact on our Domain Authority. Should I give in and concede the HTML sitemap since we have an XML one? Or am I right that we don't want to get rid of it?

Generating a Sitemap for websites linked to a wordpress blog
Greetings, I'm looking for a way to generate a sitemap that will include static pages on my home directory, as well as my wordpress blog. The site that I'm trying to build this for is in a temporary folder, and can be accessed at http://www.lifewaves.com/Website 3.0 I plan on moving the contents of this folder to the root directory for lifewaves.com whenever we are go for launch. What I'm wondering is, is there a way to build a sitemap or sitemap index that will point to the static pages of my site, as well as the wordpress blog while taking advantage of the built in wordpress hierarchy? If so, what's an easy way to do this. I have generated a sitemap using Yoast, but I can't seem to find any xml files within the wordpress folder. Within the plugin is a button that I can click to access the sitemap index, but it just brings me to the homepage of my blog. Can I build a sitemap index that points to a sitemap for the static pages as well as the sitemap generated by yoast? Thank you in advance for your help!! P.S. I'm kind of a noob.
