Different Errors Running 2 Crawls on Effectively the Same Setup
-
Our developers are moving away from utilising robots.txt files due to security risks, so e have been in the process of removing them from sites. However we, and our clients still want to run Moz crawl reports as they can highlight useful information.
The two sites in question sit on the same server with the same settings (in fact running on the same Magento install). We do not have a robots.txt files present (they 404), and as per Chiaryn's response here https://mza.seotoolninja.com/community/q/without-robots-txt-no-crawling this should work fine?
However for www.iconiclights.co.uk we got: 902 : Network errors prevented crawler from contacting server for page.
While for www.valuelights.co.uk we got: 612 : Page banned by error response for robots.txt.
These crawls were both run recently, and there was no robots.txt present. Not to mention, they are on the same setup/server etc as mentioned. Now, we have just tested this, by uploading a blank robots.txt file to see if it changed anything - but we get exactly the same errors.
I have had a look, but can't find anything that really matches this on here - help would really be appreciated!
Thanks!

Hey there! Tawny from the Customer Support team here!
This sounds like a juicy issue, and one I'd love to dive in and help you with! Unfortunately, without being able to take a look at your campaigns and account directly, it's tough to provide specific support for these issues.
That said, if you write in to [email protected] and give us the details of what you're seeing - basically exactly what's in this question - we should be able to help investigate for you.

Having no Robots.txt, or a blank one, is perfectly fine (though honestly its no more a security risk than your Sitemap.xml). But your current issue is that both of your sites are returning 403 status codes at crawlers while people are still able to land on your pages. This has nothing to do with the Robots.txt file being changed or removed; just an odd coincidence. This most likely is an issue in htaccess file.

Crawl-test not doesn't finish
Hello, I have used this crawl-test on 2 website 3 days ago, and it hasn't finished yet. I'm wondering if the crawler is on an infinite loop, or has crashed without sending back an error. I could re-launch the test, but if it's really still crawling, I don't want to loose any work in progress. Is there any way to check the status of a crawl?

Erroneous 404 Errors?
On a New Rankings & Insights email I got today, one of our sites showed over 50 404 errors totally 49% of the site. When viewing the details, every one of the errors shows the URL in the following structure: http://domainname.com/page/domainname.com. I'm not sure why this is happening, but the site and all of its pages are fine. We were having an SSL issue, but that is cleared up now. I just ran a crawl report and all checked out ok, but there were no result in the .csv file that concatenated the domain name to the end of the URL string. That doesn't seem like it would be the issue, but it's the only issue we were aware of with this site. This is the only site of ours that this is happening to. Does anyone have any thoughts on why this happened? Thank you.

Duplicate page found with MOZ crawl test?
When I crawl my website www.radiantguard.com, the crawl test comes back with what appears to be a duplicate of my home page: http://www.radiantguard.com and http://www.radiantguard.com/ Does the crawler indeed see two different pages and therefore, are my search engine rankings potentially affected, AND is this because of how my rel canonical is set up?

Moz Crawl Test says pages have no internal links
Greetings, I am working on a website, https://www.nasscoinc.com, and ran a Moz Crawl Test on it. According to the crawl test, only 2 of the website's hundreds of pages are receiving internal links. When I run a similar test on the site using Screaming Frog, I see that most of the pages have at least one internal link. I'm wondering if anyone has seen this before with the crawl test; and there is a way to get the crawl test to see the internal links? Thanks!

Suggestion for Improving the Crawl Report on Canonicals
This came up in the answer to a question I gave here http://moz.com/community/q/canonicals-in-crawling-reports#reply_222623 Wanted to post here to put it in as a suggestion on how to improve the Moz Crawl reports Currently, the report shows FALSE if there is no canonical link on a page and TRUE if there is. IF you get a TRUE response, this shows up as a warning in your report. I currently use Canonical to Self on almost all my pages to help with some indexing issues. I currently use the EXACT function in excel to create a formula to see if my canonical link matches the URL of the page (as this is what I want it to do). I can then know that the canonical is implemented properly, or if I need to manually check pages to make sure the canonical that points to another page is correct. I would like to suggest that the Moz crawl tool does this. It can show FALSE is the canonical is missing, TRUE if the canonical is present and SELF if the canonical points to the URL of the page it is on. I think for the most part this would be much more actionable information. I would even suggest that TRUE would need to be more of a high priority alert, and SELF can't do any damage, so I would leave that info in the CSV but not have that as a warning in the web interface. Thanks for listening!
