Facets Being Indexed - What's the Impact?
-
Hi
Our facets are from what I can see crawled by search engines, I think they use javascript - see here http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/lockers
I want to get this fixed for SEO with an ajax solution - I'm not sure how big this job is for developers, but they will want to know the positive impact this could have & whether it's worth doing.
Does anyone have any opinions on this?
I haven't encountered this before so any help is welcome
-
I think I'd have to request these. I know it's something I need to look at, but I;m not sure how high a priority I should put on it.
Do you think it would make a huge difference if they were stopped from being crawled?
-
Hey Becky, I definitely question if they're being crawled at all. Do you have access to your server logs at all? If so, you could then use Screaming Frog's Log Analyser (https://www.screamingfrog.co.uk/log-file-analyser/) to parse through them and find if Googlebot is indeed hitting those pages. It would be worth the investigation!
-
I am confused as to whether they're even being crawled if Google ignores everything after the #
Perhaps they're being crawled but not indexed...
-
Thanks, I'll do that as a starting point
-
It's a really interesting question and I wonder if they are being crawled. The link destination on them in the right sidebar goes to /#, which shouldn't let the search engines crawl these links.
Are you seeing these parameters in Search Console or your log files? That is where I would look to see if they are actually being hit by Googlebot.
If they are, then you should remove that anchor link and let the checkboxes activate the facets. Not sure how easy this is to do technically, but it's the right way to do it.

Hi John,
Yeh I'm just trying to understand it all Yes that's what I mean with the facet link you've shown.
I just want to ensure I'm not wasting Googlebot's time crawling facets which don't need to be crawled.
I'm not so worried about the duplicate pages as there's a canonical, but I don't think these facets are SEO friendly - I'm trying to work out how to make them SEO friendly
-
Hey Becky, I see you posting a bunch about your technical SEO and internal linking/indexation discoveries. Great to see that you're digging in deep!
When you say a "facet", do you mean a link like this - http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/multipurpose-storage-lockers#facet:-70000000000000105744949554832109109&productBeginIndex:0&orderBy:5&pageView:grid& ?
If that's the case, that page has a canonical on it back to the base of http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/multipurpose-storage-lockers, but you should take a look in your server logs (this is a good place to start - https://builtvisible.com/log-file-analysis/) to see if these are being hit by Googlebot.
Just trying to figure out what you're asking so I can try to help!

Webpage has bombed outside of Top 50 for search term in one week. What's the cause?
I've been monitoring the performance of some pages via the email Moz sends every week, and until this week two pages that I've managed to get ranking have ranked between 20 and 23 for the specific term. However, today on the email one of the pages for one search term has bombed out of the top 50 while the other page has remained unaffected. What could be the cause for this? I've looked at Google Webmasters for an indication of a penalty of some sort but there is nothing glaringly obvious. I've no messages on there, and I haven't bought a load of spam links at all. What else could I check?

Duplicate content URLs from bespoke ecommerce CMS - what's the best solution here?
Hi Mozzers Just noticed this pattern on a retail website... This URL product.php?cat=5 is also churning out products.php?cat=5&sub_cat= (same content as product.php?cat=5 but from this different URL - this is a blank subcat - there are also unique subcat pages with unique content - but this one is blank) How should I deal with that? and then I'm seeing: product-detail.php?a_id=NT001RKS0000000 and product-detail.php?a_id=NT001RKS0000000&cont_ref=giftselector (same content as product-detail.php?a_id=NT001RKS0000000 but from this different URL) How should I deal with that? This is a bespoke ecommerce CMS (unfortunately). Any pointers would be great 🙂 Best wishes, Luke

I cannot strip out brand data on the 'not provided' keywords in Google analytics. Is this not possible anymore? I understand we cannot get specific keywords but can we no longer strip out brand on organic traffic in Google analytics for keywords that are 'not provided' ?

Why is my client's site not ranking anymore? Like big time!
Ok, I'm reaching out to all of you Moz'rs for some help with this one. My client's site has dropped off the face of google in a real short period of time. It went from page 1 (avg rank 3 to page 6 (avg rank 50) and below in the matter of 2 weeks. Here's some facts: 1. DA is a 22 and homepage PA is a 31. It outranks all other sites in its competitive set. 2. The homepage used to be the page that displays for keyword searches, now its the FAQ page, which has a lower PA of 23. Why has the home page seemingly vaporized? And, why is the FAQ showing as the first result? What should I start checking. I feel paralyzed, not sure where to start. More info: a. There are no alerts present in Webmaster Tools. b. For some reason the homepage (domain.com) was 301'd to domain.com/home.html. Domain.com is indexed by Google, however, domain.com/home.html is not. If this is the issue, what is the best way to handle it? Thanks in advance for your help!

How do you find old linking url's that contain uppercase letters?
We have recently moved our back office systems, on the old system we had the ability to use upper and lower case letters int he url's. On the new system we can only use lower case, which we are happy with. However any old url's being used from external sites to link into us that still have uppercase letterign now hit the 404 error page. So, how do we find them and any solutions? Example: http://www.christopherward.co.uk/men.html - works http://www.christopherward.co.uk/Men.html - Fails Kind regards Mark

When Google's WMT shows thousands of links from a single domain... Should they be removed?
Hi, Looking at Google's WMT "links to your site" it shows few sites that have thousands of links pointing to mine. There are actually only 1-2 links pointing to me from a site that Google shows 2000.

I assume that it is simply because they don't have canonical tags. Should I ask for the 2 links to be removed? Thanks0 -
I want your opinions on the lack of increase in Pintrest's PR
Many months ago, a fellow marketer at my company introduced me to Pintrest, claiming that it would be good for our business. Pintrest was very much unknown by many just a few short months ago. Since then, I have seen it take off like wildfire, with excessive media coverage, registrations, and people putting the button on their sites. It must have thousands more backlinks now than it did six months ago--high quality ones too, as it's had coverage in virtually every major new media outlet. I want your opinion as to why it has remained a PR6 site this entire time. It was a PR6 site then and it still is now. I know the increase in PR is algorithmic, but come on! Can people share their experiences they've had link building for those higher PR sites? How much harder does it get?
