Old Website Build Effecting SEO
-
So this is a bit of a strange one.
My latest website was built on a different domain, then transferred over (as opposed to being built on a subdomain). I was told that the domain which my site was built on wasn't indexed by Google, but looking at the Google Search Console I can see that the old domain name is showing up as the most linked to domain name of my current site - meaning it was indexed. The domain (and all of its pages) does have a 301 redirect to the new website home page (as opposed to their individual pages), but could this be causing me a problem with SEO?
Additionally, my website has a sister (UK and US websites), both link to each other on the footer (which appears on every page). Could this be pulling my SEO efforts down if it is a do-follow link?

Ah, got it. Re this question:
"I was worried that because Google indexed thespacebazaar.com (and subsequently all of its content) before it was transferred over to thespacecollective.com, would Google think thespacebazaar.com was the original author of the content and see thespacecollective.com as copying."
People change domains all of the time. They rebuild their site structures, too. Since you have the old domain rolling over to the new one, AFAIK the Google search engine bots will figure out your site has moved and you have a new structure. AFAIK, you're good.
As for the SEO work, I'm sorry you have had those experiences. To some extent, SEO is both art and science. There is snake oil out there, but there are also a lot of knowledgeable people. Feel free to ping me if you put another question here on the forum. I have over 20 years experience in IT, and I am a doctoral candidate. I'd be done if I hadn't started my own company! My academic background means I am happy to teach and do a certain amount of service work when I have a moment. (Moderators, please let me know if I am not allowed to say that; I'm still new to the forum. I'm happy to edit this response.) -- Jewel

Thanks again for replying, Jewel!
My site structure changed, yes, but I redirected all of the previously structured pages to the newly structured pages, like for like, ie:
(old structure) - thespacecollective.com/product/t-shirts
(new structure) - thespacecollective.com/t-shirts
This isn't the issue.
My issue is that the newly structured website wasn't built on a subdomain of thespacecollective.com, it was built on a completely different domain; thespacebazaar.com (and the latter website was, for some unknown reason, indexed by Google). My question was regarding thespacebazaar.com general redirect to thespacecollective.com.
I was worried that because Google indexed thespacebazaar.com (and subsequently all of its content) before it was transferred over to thespacecollective.com, would Google think thespacebazaar.com was the original author of the content and see thespacecollective.com as copying.
Also, thank you for looking at both websites and taking the time to see the differences.
The two sites are very similar (this was by design), and share around 50% of the same products. I am currently writing different descriptions and product titles for both sites so there are no content copying issues. So I don't think there would be any issues there (but again, thanks for checking).
As for performing an SEO audit...
I'm currently teaching myself SEO because everybody I have hired in the past has been terrible (and super expensive for the amount of work they have done). Essentially I am reading a lot, comparing my website to what I have read, and then making changes where necessary (sometimes asking for advise first). But I'll take a look at GTMetrix and SEOQuake, thank you!
I'll also take a look at your website, thank you!

Spacecollective,
You are welcome.
If I understand correctly, then, when the entire site structure changed, that left no way to redirect pages to similar or the same pages, because there aren't any? So that is why you have the generic redirect?
I think for usability, it is better safe then sorry to do 301 redirects. I agree, you made the right choice. I don't see this as a problem that will drag down your SEO. Google search engines do not penalize for 404s, so they should also not penalize for a generic 301 redirect, although it is not a good idea to do generic. The 404 issue with redirects is more one of a usability issue, than an SEO one. You don't want someone to hit a dead end on your site.
I looked at your two sites, and although they do have similar products, they each have a different address, and a different enough interface, that to my eye, they do not seem to be complete duplicates. So I think you are OK with that link to each other.
Have you performed a full SEO audit of your system to see what issues there are?
I took the liberty of of looking at both of your sites and running some quick tests.
There are things you can tweak on both of them. Try going to: GTMetrix.com and running your URL through. If you haven't already, add SEOQuake to your Chrome or Firefox browsers, go to the URLs for your sites, and you can see some of the errors you can fix that will help your SEO on the SEOQuake interface.
For example, your keywords describe your items, but they may not necessarily be how your users search to find those items. Also, look at: https://testmysite.thinkwithgoogle.com -- your load speeds could be improved by optimizing your images.
To summarize, I think your SEO issues are not related to your 301 redirects and your link to your sister site. I see a variety of things that you can tweak and fix, and that should improve your SEO.
If you haven't done a full eval, I have a checklist on my business site that you are welcome to download (no email address required) and step through. I won't put the link here, as I don't want to be perceived as trying to sell my services or build backlinks to my site -- I'm trying to help you. But if you want to look at it, then search on my name or company, and you'll find it in the navigation bar under SERVICES. Also, I'm happy to answer any other questions related to your question in this thread.

Thanks for the response, but here is where things get sketchy.
The domain the website was built on had no previous google rank (thespacebazaar.com), it was simply a building and website testing platform - yes, I understand that this type of thing is usually done on a sub-domain, but that wasn't the case here - but upon importing the new website design, the site structure completely changed and it was here where 301 redirects were put in place (going from the old thespacecollective.com to the new thespacecollective.com site).
I 301 redirected all of thespacebazaar.com links to thespacecollective.com, but since they had no SEO value I didn't know whether or not that was even necessary. If that makes more sense?
As for language, I only have the one language installed and there is no duplicate site for other languages.

The pages with the first domain name should be linked directly to the matching page of the new domain name, not to the generic home page. Having one generic page to which you are directing all old pages will affect your SEO, as far as I know. I do think the search engines prefer old url ==> new matching url, even though it is a pain in the rear to do when you have a large site.
I think the sister link ought to be OK, but are you using the href lang tag on both sites? Is one site the canonical site, or are they separate and equal?

Link building
ok mozers i have a few questions. I am starting a new seo campaign and i want to target traffic for "how to make money on autopilot" Question 1. when it comes to link building i have seen some articles saying that i should not send all of my links to my landing page at once but to send links to my backlinks then index then using tiered link building. Is this a must or not? will i get penalized if i build 20 targeted links to my landing page in 1 day, lets say 20, pr7-9 domains? or should i tier it out and link maybe 5 pr9 domains to my landing page, then link 10 pr5 domains to each of those 5 pr9 domains and maybe link 20-pr1 domains to each of those tiered 2 pr5 domains? eq: Tier 1 = 5 PR-9 Tier 2 = 50 PR-5 Tier 3 = 1,000 PR-1 Question 2. Is their a certain amount of backlinks i need to use in order to out do my competitor? or does it just matter on the metrics of my backlinks? and when it comes to indexing these links do i need to index just the 5 pr9 links? or do i need to index all of them? or should i just index the landing page through google webmasters tools and hope it indexes all connecting pages? will doing any of these get my landing page indexed faster in order to rank faster? Question 3. Types of link building. Ok i am targeting guest blogs, wordpress sites, etc to put a link on. Should i focus on smm 'social media marketing' as well? or can i just focus on the traditional seo tactics first? Question 4. Keyword research. ok so my blog post is 'how to make money on autpilot' and from my keyword suggestion tools it picked up a list of keywords suggestions to target. Competition ranges from low to high, search volume ranges from 10 to 1900 visitors per month, after organizing the most relevant keywords to add to my campaign should i target each of the these keywords by creating a link building campaign for each one and target it to my landing page or use it as my 2nd or 3rd tier? those are the questions i really have for now. Here is my blog post http://www.vemomedia.com/how-to-make-money-on-autopilot/ Please feel me in on what i am needing to do in order to get some ranking and on how to run a link building campaign the correct way. Thanx in advance!

CDN for SEO (or not)?
Does CDN impact on SEO or not? There seems conflicting ideas as to whether they impact positively or negatively, I realise that if the page loads quicker this is a good thing for SEO and usability of course. Does Google see CDN as just cheating and a get-around for not doing the work from the ground up and using good hosting etc? Do you have any direct experience? All constructive input much appreciated!

Hypothetical SEO Question
I am running a website for a law firm. It has been running for many, many years and has plenty of backlinks and authority. I then create a standalone website for a specific type of case that the law firm is handling. On that website, I have a page that copies some of the attorney bio text from the main website. How much of a negative impact will this standalone website have on the main website as far as duplicate content issues are concerned? Please explain your answer in detail. Thank you in advance.

SEO Considerations for merging two brand website into one
Hello fellow Mozzers, We have two websites for two similar brands at my place of employment, the two brands currently serve slighly different products but could be held quite happily under one branded site. As part of a potential group merger into one sole brand, we will have to create one joined up website which will then feature all our products. The newly merged site will also have more scope to allow us to expand our product range where as currently one brand is kind of specific to a particular market due to its name. So as part of the Merge, I have to consider the potential implications for our search traffic, as this is an integral part of our business. Brand A - older, more authorative, great content, good organic positions - top 10 for pretty much all terms we favour. Brand B - younger, but has more marketing scope due to name, still good site and lots of content. Unfortunately Brand B has more in terms of potential lifespan, but is currently the less authorative of the two sites we run. it has lower DA and PR according to my Moz Analytics, a lower number of quality links and less content. In order to give the Brand B website the boost that is needed and in effect replace Brand A in the serps which has great organic positions, I need to make sure all bases are ticked for an action plan. So far this is what I have. Transfer all exisiting Brand A web pages to Brand B website. Rel canonical all Brand A pages to now point to Brand B websites new pages. 301 redirect all pages on Brand A to Brand B during the transfer. Once 301 redirects are in place then request external sites to actually repoint to Brand B website for any links. Update xml Sitemaps Update any content that mentions Brand B to now be Brand A. resubmit sitemaps to Webmaster tools Update all social profiles Update all local search profiles and listings Update all review sites with new brand name / merge any with both brands On a supplementary note for customer information, looking to also keep the older Brand A Home page up for a short time to help people understand the transition rather than a complete redirect which to our demographic could confuse and alienate people. Will also look to send a mass email to roughly 400K people informing them of the move abd how it affects them. I have no doubt there will be some glaringly obvious additions, any further advice would be much appreciated. Hope you are all well. Tim

Splitting one Website into 2 Different New Websites with 301 redirects, help?
Here's the deal. My website stbands.com does fairly well. The only issue it is facing a long term branding crisis. It sells custom products and sporting goods. We decided that we want to make a sporting goods website for the retail stuff and then a custom site only focusing on the custom stuff. One website transformed and broken into 2 new ones, with two new brand names. The way we are thinking about doing this is doing a lot of 301 redirects, but what do we do with the homepage (stbands.com) and what is the best practice to make sure we don't lose traffic to the categories, etc.? Which new website do we 301 the homepage to? It's rough because for some keywords we rank 3 or 4 times on the first page. Scary times, but something must be done for the long term. Any advise is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. We are set for a busy next few months 🙂

What is the effect on using jQuery sliders for content on SEO?
I know using css in subversive manners gets you dinged for points. I didnt know if JS counted the same since you are essentially hiding parts of the content and showing it in intervals as slides. The goal would be having key items for a client in divs and rotating those divs via a slider plugin as slides. I was just curious if that effected things in any way. Thanks! ~Paul
