Gallery page with text below, Or split into two pages
-
So i'm a professional photographer, so my gallery is pretty important, probably more imprtant than the copy supporting it. Right now I have a gallery with supplementary info pushed below. I'm wondering if it would be better to remove the text from the bottom and put it to the top of it's own page, and leave the gallery page as just images, or keep it mixed with both.
You can see my site directly HERE if you would like to see what i'm talking about exactly- the lightbox is broken, its a work in progress.

Without knowing full details about your business, I would personally use JPShots.com because it is so short, easy, and communicative. I don't know anything about Yost.

Wow, that was an incredibly well written response. I get the idea that you may do photography yourself... I think you bring up some seriously good points!
Further question, back to the SEO standpoint. I origionally set up my domain as "overlandparkphotographer.com" and then have my "jpshots.com" pointing to it. What I recently discovered is that even though the pages of my I set Yost SEO Title to be "JPShots Senior Pictures | Wedding Photographer" When you search "overland park photographer" the snippet tile is just "overland park photographer" which sounds super sketchy.
I don't know if this is something to do with yost, or if my sneeky URL isn't worth much, and I should simply use my regular jpshots.com URL as the primary. I know it works like a charm with yahoo, but i'm not sure how much the URL name factors google these days.

I think that "experience" and communication are more important than the photos themselves. People are not going to pay a lot of attention to the photos if they have to wait for them or if the page is jumping all over the place. They might leave your site or worse, they might not find it because Google realizes that it is bad experience.
Many photo sites try to present overly high resolution images and they try to incorporate a lot of rollover, etc. effects at the same time. These individually can be too much for the weak processors and tiny memories of mobile phones and tablets - and even some of the skinny browsers in inexpensive or poor-performance computers. So, I would not try to impress the visitor with special effects and fancypants design.
Present the images and present your message. If you wait to present the your message to the people who call you, you will only reach a tiny percent of the people who visit the website.
Don't underestimate the value of your text. Yes, your service is high quality photos but there is a lot more to your service than the images themselves. People might not know what professional photography includes. The photographer does a lot more than snap photos. There are elements of capturing the story of the day with the right composition, accommodating the many lighting conditions that the day and the location present, the family courtesies that must be kept in mind, and the experience and knowledge that is needed to capture a hundred one-time opportunities that are either photographed or lost through the day. You get one shot at wedding photos and if they are not done well you can't go back and shoot them again.

That's an interesting idea in how to integrate the whole thing.
I know the loading situation is sloppy, the current state was just my solution for what to do while i wait for the tech support on my gallery. I figured it was better to give the viewer a larger thumbnail until a proper lightbox was in place.
Assuming that the thumbnails are easily half the size that they are now, and they load quickly without the scroll load, would you still consider it an issue?

I would mix images and text down the page.
Prewedding photos... and explain why people like them and what might be shown.
Before the ceremony photos...
Ceremony photos...
Leaving the church photos...
Reception photos....
etc....
I think that this presents better to the visitor, gives you a chance to educate them, explains what they really get from your service, gives them ideas for your service. and makes you think about what you really do.
Google doesn't want a big bunch of photos with a bunch of text waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy down the page.
I don't want to enter a page that takes forever to load and jumps and starts while I am trying to look at it. Allow the page to load from the top down, people can see photos, scroll, encounter your words, while the rest of the page is slowly loading below.
Lots of photographers place lots of overly high resolution photos on a webpage and then the visitor's computer chokes trying to load them. That gives a bad first impression. They gotta wait for the loading, it loads sloppy, and instead of presenting a nice experience, the experience is the worst and the slowest loading page that they have seen this month.

I have fixed the link, however you can also find it simply at www.overlandparkphotographer.com
Thanks for the advice in advance!

Alt Text Best Practices
I am working on alt texts for my WordPress website. I've done a bit of research and read best practices, but I am a bit confused on how to write some of the alt texts because my entire site includes images. I know this is a big no-no and I am working with my team to get the site SEO-optimized (better text to image ratio). However, in the meantime, I need to make sure that I have some alt texts for my images. Can someone help with the following questions: 1.) I have the same "close" button in 4 locations. Can I use "close" as the alt text four times? Or should I explain where the close button is or what it closes? 2.) If my image is only text and it is more than 125 characters, is this a problem? Should I use longdesc=? If so, how do I input that in a WP site? 3.) If I have my logo in 3 locations, should I differentiate the alt text? 4.) If I have FB icon, do I just state Facebook and don't say icon? 5.) I have some background images and they don't really provide relevancy to my site other than aesthetics so should I not have alt attribute? If so, do I just place alt="" in the alt text field or does it have to be in the code? 6.) In WordPress, do I remove the description under “title,” and just put a description under “alt-text?” 7.) Can I repeat alt texts? For example, I have 4 buy now buttons, should the alt text be “buy now” all 4 times or be specific to what they are buying, such as “Buy now – Teatopia Dream On supplement drink?” 8.) I have 4 nutrition label images so can I just state what each label refers to or is it expected to have a long description with all the text on the label? 9.) I have images for desktop vs. mobile. Can I have similar copy for both. The mobile page is not set-up to index so do I even need alt text for the mobile images? 10.) Can I have characters, such as dashes and commas, in the alt text? Does initial cap matter? 11.) For decorative images or when an alt-text is not needed, do I just place alt=”” in the alt text field in WordPress?

On-page Local SEO
I'm wondering how to pull it off on-page local SEO for a financial institution website with 70 locations. However, they are broken in down in regions, which would make it easier to get our hands around. Would a viable solution be setting up regional pages? I don't know about our CMS capability, but it seems like it would be beneficial to have on each regional page aggregate local-centric press releases (example: a volunteer event or recognition) and local announcements such as paper shred days. Thoughts? Anyone else posed with a similar challenge?

Is it considered duplicate contentnt to post a video to youtube then embed that video on our website's FAQs page?
Essentially, I am answering popular questions we are asked and answering them in a video. Once I post it on youtube, I take the video, add it to our FAQ page, and when someone clicks on the question, a new page opens with the question, the video, and the written answer to the question underneath it. Thanks for any advice. watch?v=bwGRmvnCn7w

Does google places mind listing cities on the home page
Hello, A site in our industry is listing a bunch of cities on their home page and ranking for them. Like "Our dog training facility provides services to dogs in city1,city2,city3,city4,city5,city6 state" where the cities and states are relatively in their area. It's working organically, will this confuse google places? Thanks!

Online Photo Gallery: drive traffic and increase social media activity
I run a photo booth rental business for weddings and other social events. One of the features that comes standard with every package is that all of the photos from the event are hosted on an online photo gallery. We currently give the guests a business card at the event with our website address and on the website they can click a link that takes them to their online gallery, which is hosted on www.smugmug.com. I wanted to see if there is a way that we could keep the traffic/visitors on our website longer vs. sending them to www.smugmug.com. I also would like to see if there is a way that they can incorporate social media sharing, such as Google+ to share our website with their friend and family. So my questions are: 1. How do I get visitors to spend more time on my website vs. leaving to go to the www.smugmug.com website? 2. How do I get visitors to share our website/gallery/photos via social media like Google+, Facebook, etc... and bring traffic to our website?

Finding Pages with Youtube Embedded Videos in Google SERP
I'm trying to figure out a process to find specific youtube embed videos using Google search. But a lot of sites are not being returned. For example, I know that the following video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MnylRaQC3w) is linked to and embedded on http://gizmodo.com/5898438/watch-how-fender-builds-its-iconic-stratocasters However, I can't figure out a set of search terms to find that in Google. Searching for (1MnylRaQC3w Gizmodo) doesn't return the right page in the results. I'd like to figure this out so I could see everywhere a certain youtube video has been embedded.

Has Anyone Used CBS Local Pages?
CBS has a service that they offer to their advertisers called CBS Local Pages. Has anyone used this? It's about $1500 a month and basically they send "business data" to local listing platforms, this is similar to UBL and LocalEZE it seems. One of my associates subscribed to this and they're unsure of the value, they are paying $1500/mo for something that can be achieved with $125/year with localeze. Has anyone used this?
