Do Bit.ly links have SEO Value?
-
In looking at one of our competitors in Moz today, I noticed in their linking domains report showed a bit.ly link with a DA of 97. According to Moz this is a follow link as well. Should I be using bit.ly links to take advantage of their high domain? I was under the impression that bit.ly links were not considered backlinks.

We use this Bit.ly to shorten the URL for our SEO blog posts which we write.
We try to write an organic SEO blog post once a week, then we post the link to our SEO blog posts on Facebook.
We think Bit.ly is a brilliant tool, its a handy tool that is free to use we think?so we recommend using it. We use it for our company, which offers Cardiff SEO Services and we would recommend using Bit.ly

Thanks for your response, John. That's good to know. I wonder why Moz lists bit.ly as the domain with a DA of 97 when it's just a redirect from another site. Shouldn't it list the actual url? (BTW, in the case I'm referring to, the shortened link was actually an article from our competitor's own website, so definitely not a backlink.)

Hey Steven! They don't unfortunately. Here's an old thread that gives more detail as to why: https://mza.seotoolninja.com/community/q/bit-ly-links-seo-benefit
I hope that helps!

Lightboxes and SEO
Do lightboxes (AKA popup boxes when you click "learn more" type CTAs) have any negative effect on SEO? We are looking at revamping our sites to have more of a tiled approach, and a lightbox with summary content popping out with additional CTAs, directing to pages with more information or free trial pages. Is there any downside to this approach from an organic perspective? is there anything specific to keep in mind when creating these if not?

Directory links with no follow
Hi I'm researching competitor backlinks & they have a lot of directory links which are no follow - but they rank very well. Is this type of link building even allowed by google? I know they they aren't allowed followed directory links, but will no following them help with rankings?

What is the value of Google Crawling Dynamic URLS with NO SEO
Hi All I am Working on travel site for client where there are 1000's of product listing pages that are dynamically created. These pages are not SEO optimised and are just lists of products with no content other than the product details. There are no meta tags for title and description on the listings pages. You then click Find Out more to go to the full product details. There is no way to SEO these Dynamic pages This main product details has no content other than details and now meta tags. To help increase my google rankings for the rest of the site which is search optimised would it be better to block google from indexing these pages. Are these pages hurting my ability to improve rankings if my SEO of the content pages has been done to a good level with good unique Titles, descriptions and useful content thanks In advance John

Forwarding Empty URLs to Homepage for SEO & Old Backlink Salvaging - Is there any value or risk?
Our company owns about 30 URLs that we aren't currently using. Is there any SEO value to be gained by forwarding these content-less URLs to our homepage if they aren't currently indexed by google? Some of these sites were previously in use at low traffic volumes by companies who licensed use of our brand and URL. After parting ways a year or longer in the past, no 301 redirection was done to save the link juice, so it's long gone at this point. However, there may be some sites on the net that are still linking to various pages on the URL. What would be the best course of action to salvage any value of these URLs until they are in use again as full websites? Insights would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Justin

Fading Text Links Look Like Spammy Hidden Links to a g-bot?
Ah, Hello Mozzers, it's been a while since I was here. Wanted to run something by you... I'm looking to incorporate some fading text using Javascript onto a site homepage using the method described here; http://blog.thomascsherman.com/2009/08/text-slideshow-or-any-content-with-fades/ so, my question is; does anyone think that Google might see this text as a possible dark hat SEO anchor text manipulation (similar to hidden links)? The text will contain various links (4 or 5) that will cycle through one another, fading in and out, but to a bot the text may appear initially invisible, like so; style="display: none;"><a href="">Link Here</a> All links will be internal. My gut instinct is that I'm just being stupid here, but I wanted to stay on the side of caution with this one! Thanks for your time 🙂 http://blog.thomascsherman.com/2009/08/text-slideshow-or-any-content-with-fades
