Did any one else notice rankings drops since 14th-21st Feb this year?
-
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some guidance please. Our website saw a drop in rankings on around 14th - 21st Feb 2019 and the rankings haven't really recovered. I can't see anything significant in Search Console, there was a possible unconfirmed algorithm update during early Feb but I can't really find anything factual to determine if this was the cause.
The ranking drop seems to be across different keywords.
What else should I check?
Did anyone experience such a drop around this time and if so found out why this happened and how to recover?
Thanks for your help

Hi Caroline,
Recommendations would be to do as you have suggested review keywords, & pages.
Make sure you have a robust About us section that proves you are experts, look to introduce new high quality and relevant content.
Start actively searching for relevant and quality backlinks.

Hi Steve,
Many thanks for sending the links over. I've reviewed them and there seems to be some suggestions that algorithm updates happened around the time mentioned (14th - 21st).
There are few posts on here: https://www.seroundtable.com/google-search-ranking-algorithm-update-27131.html and here: https://www.seroundtable.com/google-search-ranking-algorithm-update-27077.html mentioning updates around this time.
There's the Valentine's Day update: https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-update-valentines/293451/ which talks about the algorithm focusing on relevance.
https://www.thewebmaster.com/google-updates/google-update-12-february-2019/ talks about the relevancy of content, E-A-T and how we should look at the keywords each page is targeting.
So it looks like there have been algorithm updates that may have affected our site? Some of the above links talk about how people saw their rankings recover shortly after the update. Ours dropped (our rankings practically halved around 14th - 21st Feb) and remained at this level until around 18th April where they have improved very slightly.
What would your advice be? Maybe review the keywords & pages that have dropped in rankings and check if we are utilising the most suitable keywords for those pages?
Thanks again for your help

Hi Caroline,
thanks for the response. It appears that you haven't made any changes that would have this sort of impact.
You have checked everything I would look at and found nothing to show that the site may be "broken" which is good.
Here are some links which show minor changes around the dates you have asked about, take a look and see if they may relate to your site. If they do please let us know. If not again let us know and we can keep on investigating.

Hi Steve,
So sorry for the delay, I've been manic. Amazing thank you for the info!
I don't think any changes have been made to sitemap.xml or the htaccess files. Sitemap.xml is automatically updated when we create new pages on the site. However, I have asked our developer if he has access to a change log just to be sure, so will let you know.
I've used Moz's On Demand Crawl and there are 73 crawler warnings (no critical crawler issues), please see a breakdown below...
- Meta Noindex (50 total) - these are all blog category or blog tag urls
- URL Too Long (12 total) - these are all blog URLs which I will improve and create 301s to the new url
- Title Too Long (5 total) - I will update these
- Missing Description (5 total) - I will update these
- Missing or Invalid H1 (1 total) - this is sitemap page on the website
I'm guessing none of the above would have affected rankings, the Meta Noindex warning has been visible in Moz for over 18 months, its not a recent warning.
I've looked in GA and I have compared the second half of the month, including the week where we saw a drop in rankings (14/02 - 21/02) with the first half of the month (14/02 - 28/02 vs 30/01 - 13/02) and below are the results:
- Organic: 2%
- Direct: -14%
- Referral: 12%
- Social: -61%
The keywords are pretty static and the vast majority are higher during the second half of the month. If I should be using different dates for comparison please let me know and I'll take another look.
I've looked to see if there is a particular site that stopped driving traffic to us but there isn't one really. Facebook and Instagram traffic reduced due to a change with campaigns but all other referrers' figures increased.
The site speed according to Google's Page Speed Insights is 37/100 (mobile) and 77/100 (desktop). We are currently working on some of the recommendations but we haven't seen a huge improvement so far. The report suggested we would benefit from around 7 seconds by serving images in next gen format (WebP). We implemented this change last night and the mobile score only increased from 33 to 37. We have also properly sized a couple of images and ensured text remains visible during webfont load.
Is there anywhere else you recommend I look into?
Thanks very much for your help

Hi Caroline,
Apologies for the delay in replying it's been a busy day.
- ok that's good
- The change looks good and was made a few months before the drop in traffic so it should not be related
- you can use MOZ on demand crawl, SEO power tools or if you are using any SEO tools they should pick it up.
- Good work
Did you check the sitemap.xml and the htaccess files to see if there had been any changes?
When you look at Google Analytics is there any particular traffic source or keyword that has suddenly dropped or is it roughly the same across the board?
Again if you let me know the answers to these questions I will try my best to help further.
unfortunately, I do not have any websites in the leisure market so cannot compare there.

Hi Steve,
Many thanks for your reply
The website is for a leisure company, their site has been live for over 18 months
1. The site has been on https for a couple of years
2. The only change to robots.txt was made by myself in Dec where I added the below, no other changes have been made as far as I can think:
Disallow: /basket/
Noindex: /basket/3. What is the best way of detecting redirect issues? Is there a particular tool you recommend?
4. We have 1 x 404 which I've just corrected and I've just created 2 x custom 404 reports in Google Analytics for future reference.
Is there anything else I can check please?
Thanks again, Caroline

Hi Caroline,
it would really help us to help you if you could share more information, such as the topic of the site(s), URLs if you can (we understand this is not always possible) but if you could give us an idea as to the topic this will really help us.
Otherwise, we can only provide generic information and guestimates.
Some things to check
- Did you make any significant changes to the site - implementing HTTPS for instance
- Has someone changed your sitemap, robots.txt or htaccess files
- Are you having redirect issues?
- Are you getting more 4xx errors in Google analytics

Does Google push down for not ranking top for branded keywords?
Hi all, Usually websites rank for their branded keywords. Some times third party websites takeover the websites for branded keywords. If there are more number of such queries where website is not ranking (top) for branded keywords, Google push down website in overall rankings? Any correlation? Thanks

High clicks and low rankings - Correlation?
Hi everyone, we noticed while doing last month's reports that even the best performing campaigns have a few keywords that slipped - some up to 10 positions down. We know keywords fluctuate every month, but May was just a weird month for rankings. While looking at possible issues that caused this, we noticed that these campaigns' clicks have gone up. So while keywords have gone down, their visitors seemed to be on the rise. Is there a correlation? Maybe Google saw an increase in visitors and decided something's up and lowered the rankings (this sounds ridiculous - sorry! May just be pure luck, but thought I'd ask anyway). Has anyone seen a drop in their rankings for May also? I checked everywhere, and I don't think there has been a major update going on. Thanks!

What do you think of SearchMetrics' claim that there are no longer universal ranking factors?
I agree that Google's machine learning/AI means that Google is using a more dynamic set of factors to match searcher intent to content, but this claim feels like an overstatement: Let’s be quite clear: Except for important technical standards, there are no longer any specifc factors

or benchmark values that are universally valid for all online marketers and SEOs. Instead, there
are different ranking factors for every single industry, or even every single search query. And these
now change continuously. Keyword-relevant content, backlinks, etc. still seem to be ranking factors across pretty much all queries/industries. For example, I can't think of a single industry where it would be a good idea to try to rank for [keyword] without including [keyword] in the visible text of the page. Also, websites that rank without any backlinks are incredibly rare (unheard of for competitive terms). Doubtless some factors change (eg Google may favor webpages with images for a query like "best hairstyle for men" but not for another query), but other factors still seem to apply to all queries (or at least 95%+). Significant Drop in Rankings without Explanation
My company has experienced a significant drop in rankings in the last month or so. How significant? Across our top 11 keywords, we've dropped an average of 6 positions. Some have dropped less (1 or 2) and some have dropped way more (38). We work really hard to provide great content on our site and have been building out our link profile with guest blogging on relevant sites (dailyshotofcoffee.com, for example). No major changes have been made to the URL structure or content on the pages that are ranking for our key terms, so I am not sure where the drop is coming from. For example: One of our key terms is "espresso machine" and we went from #9 to #22 in the last few weeks. We have not made any changes to the main content on the page that is ranking since September. Our on-site page report for this page has us nailing all of the critical factors, most of the high importance factors (not exact keyword in page titles - we use "espresso machines" as that is one of our other terms - or "avoid keyword stuffing" - unfortunately, our products are also named with "espresso machine" and i can't very well not follow those links or remove the term from their names), all of the moderate importance factors, and most of the low importance factors. It has been reporting this way since September. Most of our key terms are this way (haven't had content changed in the last several weeks to months and have great on-page grades). We don't engage in spammy link building (though I did some work this fall on cleaning up bad links a previous SEO company had built out). I'm just really taken aback by the sudden drop in rankings across the board. Any insight or advice anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated!

Homepage dropped from Results as I get #1 Local
Today, I noticed for a website I have (www.ghosttoursinsavannah.com) the homepage dropped out of the rankings for only one keyword. This site was previously number 3 for s specific keyword, 'Savannah Ghost Tours'. This keyword is also the keyword most customers search for, by far. Hence my mini-panic. All other keywords (roughly 200 of them) I was previously ranked for are still, pretty much, in the same location rank-wise that they were before. This is for Google by the way. The other thing I noticed is that for many keywords I am all of a sudden the (A) Local Result. I wasn't even on the map previously. Now, the keyword for which my homepage dropped from the rankings, 'Savannah Ghost Tours' is also the 'name' of my company according to Google Local. I haven't had this happen before and am quite confused by it. If anyone can help me understand why this happened and if there is anything I can do to get my organic ranking back, I would appreciate it. The only change I made wasn't even to the site. I did go out and use GetListed to add my company to a number of sites, that is all I have done in the past month. Also, These two things happened the same day, the drop in rank and the promotion to number one position for local. google-rankings.png

Does anyone know if Google ranks a responsive site, or a specific mobile site higher than each other?
I have heard that Google favors specific .m sites overs responsive designs in it's rankings. Does anyone know if this is true? And, if there is any supporting information. I have been in contact with our account team at Google but haven't had a response on this as yet. I appreciate any help on this. Cheers!

Lost 50% google traffic in one day - panic?
Hi girls + guys, a site of us were hit by a google update or a google penalty. We have lost 50% google traffic in one day (25th april, 2012). (Total visitors in average per day: 6k, yesterday: 3k) It's a german website, so I think google.de (germany) was updated. Our rankings in google.at (austria) are also affected, but it's not that bad as in google.de. We have not done any specific on page seo activities in the last two months. GWT doesn't have any message for us (no critical errors). After my first analyse I can say this: google has indexed 17k pages (thats fine) we are on 1st place with our domain name the last three days, the google traffic went up (+20%), but yesterday it was 50% below average (so -70%) last week we had a very good day, we had twice the traffic than normal, but this calmed down the following days we have lost number no. 1 places at two high traffic keywords. We had these no 1 rankings for years. We have been outranked by two of our competitors, but they have not done any onpage changes. We have lost a lot of positions at a lot of keywords. But there are also keywords which moved up. We have good content, useres are visiting 5 pages in average. No virus, no hacker (no hidden cloaking page) it's an old domain (2002) Lot of (good) inbound links Lot's of likes, g+. Good twitter activty. So, all in all I think it's more likely a ranking algo change than a penalty (a penalty for what reason?) My specific question(s): Is there any "check list" which could help me to find out the reason for this mess? What is the best strategy to regain the positions? New HTML code? New On page seo? (seomoz grades most of our important pages an A) Any idea would be appreciated! Best wishes,

Ranking factors for national and local
What SEO impact factors am I missing if I am ranked 1st on Google for a keyword, but not ranked local search? The keyword being setup like {"company industry" "location" }. Its ranked 4th when searched on google and the location is specific to the location in the keyword. I've tried to varify that all of my citations are correct and identical. When I compare my sites Domain Authority and links to its competitors, I should be dominating that search. If you guys have any incite it would be greatly appreciated. MADD DOGG
