Online shop - Long Titles & URLs acceptable?
-
Hi guys,
We have this new online shop with over 1000 products (very technical products), synchronised with the SAP system of the company. So basically the page URLs are generated based on the following structure:
Domain Name / Language / Product Category / Subcategory-1 / Subcategory-2 / Subcategory-3 / Product Name and Model
Sometimes the URLs are over 130 characters length.
Would this harm the shop's ranking, so should we really fix this, or it's something that can be ignored, having in mind the technical products in the shop?
I would really appreciate your advice!
Thanks!

We do not believe that you need to worry about this at all.
Google wants to show the most relevant results for a search query regardless of URL length. Short URL's look better to humans but if you have a long URL that has authority and is optimized well for the phrase and gives the searcher what they are looking for, then Google will show it in the SERPs.
We just pulled the top 20 results for 200 phrases that we are tracking in our system to analyze the URL length to give you some real data.
- Out of the 2000 URL's showing up in the top 10 spots, 77 of them contain 100 characters or more. That's 3.85% of all the URL's.
- The longest URL was 194 characters long and ranked number 3 for a specific query.
- 165 URL's in the top 20 spots contain more than 100 characters.
- Average URL length is 62.04 characters.
- Average URL length excluding homepages that rank is 65.01 characters.
- Median character length is 60.
A bigger issue for you all is to work on getting as many of your URL's indexed as possible to give them the chance to show up in the SERPs.

Hi, I have an important news site and I am trying to implement user friendly URLs. Now, when you click a news in the homepage, it goes to a redirect.php page and then goes to a friendly url. the question is, It is better to have the friendly URL in the first link or it is the same for the robot having this in the finally url? Thanks

Duplicate Page Title & Content Penalty On Website Tonight Platform
I built my primary website on Website Tonight (WT) five years ago when I was a net newbie and I'm presently new to seomoz. The initial crawl indicated a problem with duplicate page title and duplicate content with my website home page in WT. It turns out that the WT platform makes you assign a file name to your homepage i.e: www.business.com/homepage.html that differs from the www.business.com that you want as your homepage url. Apparently the search engines are recognizing these identical pages as separate and duplicate. I know that the standard answer would be to just do a 301 redirect from the long file name to the short file name - end of story. But WT does not allow you to do 301 redirects and they also do not give you the ability to go into the htaccess file to fix this yourself manually. I spoke to the folks at WT tonight and they claim that they automatically do 301 redirects on the platform. But if this true then why am I getting the error message in seomoz? Does anyone know if this is a problem? If so, does anyone here have a fix? Thanks in advance. Sincerely - Bill in Denver

/out/ URLs in GWMTs
I am recently seeing some URLs come up as 404s in GWMTs for a client. They look like this: http://client-url/out/www.linkedin.com/company/client-linkedin-name /out/client-url/sub-directory/postname/ We thought they might have something to do with the social plugins but they are all over the place and they are sometime for internal pages on the site. Anyone run into these and know why they are happening?

Importance of SEO Friendly URLs
Hey SEOZ! How important do you all think SEO friendly URLs are to SEO. Here is an example: Non: http://www.domain.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=2964 Friendly: http://www.domain.com/product_name_here.html I have always heard mixed reviews but did an experiment comparing results on the same domain and actually noticed quite a difference with the friendly ones. Thanks!

Iframes & SEO
I've got a client that wants a site with all content in iFrames. They saw another site they liked & asked if we could do it. Of course we can technically. How big a negative hit would they take with SEO? Is there anything we can do to mitigate it, such as redirects, etc? Thanks for the help!

Domainchange & Relaunch
Hi SEOMOZERS, We are planning to do a relaunch (new content, new design) + a domainname change (because it contains a keyword). Some of my team members think it is best to do the domain change already on the old-version to see if there might be some problems. Whereas I think it would be best to implement the domainchange on the new version because otherwise it can be suspected we did the domainchange only for SEO purposes. What are you guys thinking? Thanks Gregor
