Local Site stuck on page 2 for years. Can’t penetrate page 1! Help!
-
Hey there Moz community! This is the first time I've ever asked a question here so please forgive if I slip up on any etiquette.
I manage a website for a small Orlando Florida family law and divorce law firm who are targeting search phrases that include those "Orlando divorce attorney" variants. The site is located at https://www.affordablefamilylawyer.com/
If you run a search for "Orlando divorce attorney" along with close variant search terms our law firm website for about the past two years has hovered at the top of the second page of google but has never actually penetrated page 1.
When you examine metrics such as page authority, domain authority, trust, and other traditional metrics it tells you that our site should be on page 1 but alas it's not happening.
We have, however been featured quite often in the three pack for the local listings for the target search terms. Though valuable, our goal has always been to be featured in the top three of the organic search results.
To add to the confusion we have a practice area page located at https://www.affordablefamilylawyer.com/orlando-divorce-lawyer/ dedicated to divorce and expected that page to rank for these divorce attorney search terms but it will not rank for the search terms and instead our homepage ranks for them every single time regardless of how we swap around the optimization on the page.
Never had any manual actions. any help you guys can offer is greatly appreciated and I really appreciate your time!
-
I'd say for most of my clients without looking is the sites coming in lack huge amounts of relevance...
If you do a search you may not have the keywords you're going after inside the URL, Title, URL-Slug, Headers etc... but honestly the first 3 are where it's at, you can screw up your anchor text with nothing but generics and do well. I would of course hit around your main keywords if you've not done that.
Also double check to see if your links are even indexed.

hope this helps,

HI
I am normally in Winter Park FL however I am testing this from New Hampshire right now so please excuse that
https://www.marseelaw.com/ ranks number one because of their content and site speed in addition to having a cleaner backlink profile.
Your website
https://www.affordablefamilylawyer.com/
"Orlando divorce attorney" along with close variant search terms our law firm website for about the past two years has hovered at the top of the second page of google but has never actually penetrated page 1."
"When you examine metrics such as page authority, domain authority, trust, and other traditional metrics it tells you that our site should be on page 1 but alas it's not happening.

When you say you should be on page 1
For the regular SERPS, I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but your domain authority is 27 unfortunately many of the other companies that are ranking have much higher.
Your backlink profile shows that you have far more links than you have root domains which is normal but in your case you have way too many links from the same domains which do not count as they would if they were coming from a fresh domain.
https://www.affordablefamilylawyer.com/Backlinks 19KRef Domains 331 The person that's showing up number one in the regular SERPs is not doing as well in terms of quantity of links but the quality they're doing much higherhttps://www.marseelaw.com/Backlinks 6KRef Domains 284 most importantly they have anchor text for the keyword that you want to rank for from 17 domains

Content
Your content for your website has not been optimized even in the most basic terms. For the keywords, you're going after I am familiar with your area you know what Winter Park is We are 10 minutes away from you. I know Orlando and you're not using the words Orlando divorce attorney enough in your content or in your title tags.
You're going to have to really invest in re-coding your website so that you do not have so many errors increasing your site speed through higher-quality hosting as well as doing some development work on fixing your site. And a serious search engine optimization campaign that focuses on content and creating something that is unlike anything else.

- Tools like https://www.stackpath.com/ or https://www.fastly.com/ or https://www.cloudflare.com/plans/business/ come with the hosting companies I recommended you can also add them to your existing system. However, companies like servebolt come with CloudFlare enterprise or business Pantheon comes with Fastly, Pagely comes with CloudFront it's important to have an optimized content delivery network on your website a base version of Cloudflare does not cut it. you can add any of the tools above to your existing liquid Web hosting however I recommend something better like I have listed below.
you recently switched to Liquid Web, is not a bad web host but if you're looking to have a very fast word press site you can do much better.

After looking over your site's situation, I have a few comments and suggestions.
Many times I see that not following a keyword map precisely, is part of the problem. What I mean is that you should have a keyword map that lists all your URL's and assigns keywords to each URL. You want to be very clear which page you are trying to rank for each phrase. The map then guides all of your optimization efforts including: title tags, page content, alt text, internal link anchor text, backlink anchor text (although don't over do it), etc.
Your site is doing mostly just fine following a keyword map but it could do better when it comes to the divorce phrases.
Current homepage optimization:
- title tag's first main keyword focus is "Orlando Divorce Attorney"
- title tag's second main keyword focus is "Family Law Attorney"
- breadcrumbs on all 30 navigation pages use "Orlando Family Lawyer" as the anchor text to point back to the homepage
- logo alt text is "Orlando Family Lawyer" (keep in mind the logo links back to the homepage from every page is the first link in the code of every page linking to your homepage even above the main navigation)
- "family law" shows up 15 times in the content
- "orlando family lawyer/law" shows up 3 times in the content
- "orlando divorce attorney" shows up 12 times in the content
- alt text for both images in the main content area is "orlando divorce attorney"
Current Divorce page optimization (https://www.affordablefamilylawyer.com/orlando-divorce-lawyer/
- title tag's first main phrase is "orlando divorce attorney"
- title tag: doesn't contain second main phrase. But does add modifier words "experienced" and "dependable"
- breadcrumbs from 5 divorce subcategory pages use "orlando divorce lawyer" as anchor text
- "orlando divorce attorney" shows up 5 times in the content
- "orlando divorce lawyer" shows up 4 times in the content
- anchor text in main navigation is the word "divorce" across the whole site
Suggested changes based off of the above bullet point lists:
- Homepage title tag changed to something that focuses more on the "family law/lawyer/attorney" phrases like: "Distinguished Family Law Attorney - Orlando Family Lawyer - Sean Smallwood" (You can continually test different title tags over time to find the best one that helps you rank high and gets the best click through rate)
- change alt text of one image to "orlando family law attorney" and the other to "orlando family lawyer"
- make sure to include "attorneys" and "lawyers" at least once in the content and any other modifier words that go along with "family lawyer" terms that this page should rank for
- Divorce page title tag change to "Orlando Divorce Attorney - Experienced & Dependable Divorce Lawyer in Orlando, Florida"
- Don't make the word "Divorce" in the navigation clickable but in the drop down menu add a link to the Divorce page with the anchor text "Divorce Attorney" or "Divorce Lawyer" (whichever one you want to rank the most for
- From within the content of the homepage, link the phrase "divorce attorney" to the divorce page
Other suggestions:
-
go through all of your blog posts and make sure any existing links link to the proper page based off of the anchor text and the keyword map.
-
Example: https://www.affordablefamilylawyer.com/average-cost-of-divorce/ links to homepage with anchor text "the average cost of a divorce case" which is what this post is optimized for, not the homepage. So I'd remove that link and link some "divorce attorney" phrase from this page to the Divorce page.
-
add more internal links from within your blog posts using the right anchor text to the Divorce page and other pages your working on
-
deindex your blog tag pages and archive pages (this is easy to do in wordpress)
Obviously track your rankings for all your keywords and to monitor what effect these changes have to the divorce phrases and the family law phrases at the very least.
Finally, these suggestions all assume you want the Divorce page to ultimately rank for divorce phrases and not the homepage. If after making these changes, the Divorce page doesn't rank as high as the homepage did and the homepage no longer ranks, it'll probably be because the homepage has more backlinks, and therefore, authority. In this case, I'd actually consider optimizing your homepage for the divorce phrases and pushing that to page one while still link building to the divorce page and then down the road trying again to get the divorce page ranking. That's all assuming that your divorce page will have a higher conversion rate from site visitor to call-in/form fill out. But if your homepage converts the same or better, maybe you just push that page because it's already top of page 2. But keep in mind that it could hurt your family law phrases if you push the divorce phrases too much on the homepage.

Unsolved GMB Local SEO question
I am trying to diagnose how one particular competitor is smoking us in local rankings. I came across a text field “Service Details' within Google My Business Services. This allows me to put in a brief description of each service we offer. My thought is that this could be a good place for keywords. That said, the descriptions are not public facing (or to the best of my knowledge) so I am reluctant to do all the work for nothing. I am wondering if anyone has filled these out and if there were any noticeable results. Any insight is appreciated

2 Websites Targeting Similar Keywords
One of my clients is set on setting up another website targeting some of the keywords/services on the main site. One of the services they offer gets traffic from natural search and also Adwords but doesn't convert well for this service. For other services (which are often utilized at the same time by the customers) the site converts well. My client feels that... "people are not converting on the main site because they click on the page and realise that we are a wider company. From this they probably work out that we don’t actually produce Green Widgets and we just buy them in. Therefore we will be more expensive than a company who does manufacture Green Widgets (although there are only a few in the country who actually make them)." The new site "...will have more of a manufacturer and specialist feel. There will be a small mention of other services. People visiting will think we are specialists and that we make them, whereas at the moment they may feel that they are just being cross sold a product. We have also noticed that we are not being found earlier enough and we are contacted to do other work only to find that another company is providing the Green Widgets." I did something similar back in the day, but here we ran a local website and a national website covering the same products. We tried hard not to duplicate the keywords we targeted minimising this as much as possible. I don't think we cared much about the local site as the national one went crazy busy. In essence, my client wants to do the following: Main Site...
Local SEO | | GrouchyKids
Blue Widgets Bristol
Red Widgets Bristol
Green Widgets Bristol (This would be retained) New Site...
The new site would focus on Green Widgets In time the new site would include content for...
Green Widgets
Green Widgets Bristol (As per the main site)
Green Widgets Cardiff It would also make mention of Blue Widgets and Red Widgets as possible addons. The new site would be at the same address but have its own companies house registration, emails and phone numbers. My feeling is that we should take an above-board, risk-free approach and remove the Green Widgets service from the main site to ensure it doesn't upset Google. In other words go out of our way to minimise targeting of similar/same keywords across the 2 sites. My client strongly disagrees showing evidence of others using similar tactics (we have had the EMD debate as well). I am also concerned about Google Places and how this might be viewed here. Opinions please, also any idea of what if any action Google would take if we push forwards?0 -
Two websites or a sub domain or sub page?
Hi, Our company has three branches in Canada and opening a 4th in the United States soon. Our target market strategy will differ in the States and I would like to know your opinion if we should launch a second site under a slightly different brand or not. I don’t want to do anything that could negatively impact our site’s current organic ranks. I feel I have to give some history on our company so you understand the dilemma. It is a little complicated. So, in Canada, we rent large generators and all the equipment needed to distribute and transform that power. We don’t own the generators. We re-rent generators (broker) from our partners. What we own is all the distribution equipment that typically accompanies a generator rental. We make money on the generator also, but the real money is in the distribution portion. In terms of messaging, our current site is tuned to target the end-user, the same market that our re-rent partners target. As a result, our re-rent partners and our company will bid on the same project in many occurrences. Our strategy in the United States is to primarily target the re-rent market. That is a very small segment in comparison to the end-user. From a marketing perspective, all that is really needed to target that group is an outside sales team. There are maybe 40 re-rent partners we will target in our first U.S. GEO… Texas. In the States, we will not rent generators. We will not run ad campaigns that bid on any generator rental type terms. We will not offer the same level of turn-key solutions we offer in Canada. All of the equipment we manufacture will be very generic in appearance, think Acme. Branding will look completely different than what we have up in Canada. We want the re-rent companies we target in the States to feel comfortable we are there to support them not compete against them. Regarding website strategy, I see three options: 1. We create a sub domain or sub page of www.trinitypower.com that explains the services we offer in the States. This for me is the safest solution. 2. We launch a second domain www.trinitypowerrentals.com that has similar content in-terms of the type of equipment we rent, but speaks directly to re-rent partners. That may not be enough of a differentiator though and I fear two sites owned by the same company with similar content will have negative SEO implications, if not right away, a year down the road. 3. We launch a new website under a completely different company name. This still carries some risk as I understand it, even if we have different phone numbers, company registration info, etc…

Local store (B2B) that produces high quality prints for photographers: are we adopting the right strategy?
Hi, I'd like to know your opinion on the following case and gather new ideas on how to optimise our strategy: Starting situation: local store (B2B) in a bigger city in Europe that produces high quality prints mainly for photographers on paper (or other materials like canvas, aluminium, etc. ). They really take care of your images (e.g. Color Management) and produce printouts that look how they really should look like. Target audience: photographers (pros), museum, exhibitions and hotel people that would like to produce high quality prints of their images. Almost never the ambitioned private photographers (until now). **Actual situation: **its really a local business (people around 30 km). competition: big online stores where you can upload your pictures and get your prints sent home (quality: not bad, but not exceptional, no special requests; more for private customers) Already done (with relatively little results): _AdWords: _very "tight" keyword combinations, not broad at all, targeting area around business location. results: small traffic, small costs: not a lot of conversions. _SEO: _for organic search we now achieve very good positions for tight" keyword combinations, not broad ones. results: little traffic: not a lot of conversions LinkedIn-Ads targeting the above target group: results: little traffic: not a lot of conversions Facebook Remarketing (targeting his newsletter mail-list: results: little traffic: not a lot of conversions Optimized the landingpage (in my opinion far more to the point than before) PROBLEM: Basically we now get to the right people but traffic is really (too) small. At least we don't waste money at all but we don't gain a lot either... If we broaden the "keywords" the private customers will come in and waste our advertising money. Do you ever had a similar situation? What did you do? Any suggestions? Other target groups? Alternative channels? Thanks for your input. Cheers, Cesare

Duplicate site with same content
Hi All, I hope someone can assist, We have 2 brands that sell the exact same products. We have a main and an off brand. We just redeveloped the main brands site and now have to do the off brand (was owned by another company and we acquired them, we then changed their products to match ours). Am I able to pretty much clone the site and just change the branding and rel canonical each page to its original on the main brand? Granted I will lose rankings but will it be something that will affect anything else? I want to do this so it saves us time in updating products on both sites (and avoids errors in incorrect pricing). Would appreciate some guidance with this one 🙂 Cheers Dave

Local Pages for National (Service) Companies
Hi there, I was wanting to know the value of local pages for a service company that operates nationally. They do not have a phone number or address, but they do maintain employees in each of the locations and are thus, keen to emphasize this fact with location pages. The location pages merely explain that they have staff in each of the locations and experience working there, alongside a variety of information that is relevant to the industry/market in that location. None of the location pages are currently ranking well at all - in fact, all of the ones I've looked at so far have had a page authority of 1. Most of the major towns, cities and counties for the entire UK have been covered which means the location pages constitute a significant proportion of all of the pages for the entire site. My questions are: Is a national service company likely to benefit from having location pages? And could it even be something they could be penalised for at some point down the line? Thanks very much, in advance, for your time. Kind Regards, Tom

Please help me choose which is the better brand name or domain name?
I am helping a friend and getting involved in looking at launching a taxi service in a major city. Now this is for one of the major cities of world. A big part of the branding of the company or service will be the unique and memorable telephone number this company owns. This company is not expected to be anything huge, just a good small local business. However, we are trying to utilise online marketing which I feel have not been utilised by this cector that much.. The telephone number is something as good as 100 1515, but slightly better. These numbers are hard to get hold of and even when there is one available it's often very expensive. So a big part of the company will be getting that number seen everywhere. As it's a regional business, just for that one city, and for taxi services having a good telephone number that people can easily remember is important. However, most people now use smart phones, and people will often search on their phones or ipads for "birmingham taxi" or "birmingham taxi service" and so on. I have the opportunity, as an example to either go with "getbirminghamtaxi.co.uk" or "getabirminghamtaxi". So the choice is between "Get Birmingham Taxi" or Get a Birmingham Taxi" - the difference being putting the "a" in the middle like a sentence. I also thought of exact match domain "birmingham taxi" or birminghamtaxi.co.uk but the owner wants between £3,000-£12,000 (so between $5,000-$20,000) for it. I feel with a domain purchased for just £3 ($5) I would be able to test the market, and if I found it was successful, we could then consider acquiring a more expensive EMD. I feel that services like private taxi hire firms are small tiny regional businesses, and they don't really do much on search and SEO. I feel if our one did, it would stand out, and I do think quite a few people search online for taxi's, and I know I do. I am also aware that there are now app's like Halo but there is room for a small business to thrive doing a lot online and offline marketing with a great number. This is not for Birmingham. I have just made that up. So I would welcome people's feedback in terms of which domain name would be best, with or without the "a"? If you have an alternative suggestion I would welcome that. Also if anyone has any other comments or feedback about this market, doing business, marketing, or any knowledge that you have that you would like to share with us - then that would be appreciated. Thank you.

2 Word EMD's - Good of bad for SEO
Hello Again Moz Folks, I have a domain: www.edmontonweb.ca
Local SEO | | Web3Marketing87
It is currently on page 2 and I'm trying to figure out ways to improve its ranking. Because it is an EMD, I considered forwarding it to www.launchwebdesign.ca Considering there is existing Domain Authority on edmontonweb.ca, is this a good move?
Would forwarding the domain transfer DA to launchwebdesign.ca? Thanks, Anton0
