@fktos-tam-906n one of the most important things when redesigning is not breaking existing URLs - so you need to make sure all redirects are in place.
I have been working on Bernard, an automated broken links checker service with this exact feature: if you ever rename or remove a page and forget to set up a redirect, you'll get a notification.
This feature isn't out yet, but it's planned to release within the next few weeks. If you want you can sign up (there's a free tier) and let me know if you have any feedback. It's a very common issue, and honestly I haven't found anything good enough for my websites and clients until I started working on this problem.

Maintaining SEO rankings after redesigning a website is crucial to ensure that your hard-earned visibility on search engines isn't lost in the process. Here are some practical steps to help you navigate through this transition smoothly:
-
Comprehensive SEO Audit:
Before diving into the redesign, conduct a thorough SEO audit of your current website. Identify top-performing pages, high-ranking keywords, backlinks, and any technical issues that might be affecting your SEO. -
Preserve URL Structure:
Try to maintain the URL structure of your old website as much as possible. If changes are unavoidable, set up proper 301 redirects from old URLs to new ones. This ensures that search engines and users are seamlessly directed to the updated pages, preserving link equity. -
Content Optimization:
While redesigning, focus on optimizing content for both users and search engines. Ensure that your content is relevant, engaging, and includes target keywords naturally. Pay attention to headings, meta tags, and image alt attributes. -
Mobile-Friendly Design:
With the increasing dominance of mobile devices, having a responsive design is imperative for SEO. Ensure that your redesigned website is mobile-friendly and provides an excellent user experience across all devices. -
Page Load Speed:
Page speed is a crucial ranking factor for search engines. Optimize images, minify CSS and JavaScript files, leverage browser caching, and utilize Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) to improve your website's loading time. -
Maintain Internal Linking Structure:
Internal linking helps search engines discover and index your website's pages effectively. Maintain a logical and hierarchical internal linking structure to distribute link equity and improve navigation for users and search engine crawlers. -
Monitor and Adapt:
After the redesign, closely monitor your website's performance using tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console. Keep an eye on changes in organic traffic, rankings, and user behavior. If you notice any significant drops, investigate and address them promptly. -
Update Sitemap and Robots.txt:
Update your website's sitemap.xml file and robots.txt file to reflect the changes made during the redesign. This helps search engine crawlers understand the structure of your website and index it efficiently. -
Engage in Link Building:
Actively engage in link-building activities to maintain and strengthen your website's backlink profile. Seek opportunities for guest blogging, outreach to relevant websites, and participate in industry forums and communities. -
Educate Your Team:
Ensure that everyone involved in the redesign process, including developers, designers, and content creators, understands the importance of SEO. Encourage collaboration and communication to minimize the risk of unintentional SEO errors.
By following these steps and staying vigilant throughout the redesign process, you can minimize the impact on your SEO rankings and ensure that your website continues to attract organic traffic and visibility in search engine results. Remember, SEO is an ongoing effort, and staying proactive is key to long-term success.

Hi there,
Great question! And one that doesn't necessarily have a quick and easy answer, since all websites (and redesigns are different), and there are many ranking factors. Have you had an SEO professional conduct a formal SEO Site Audit to help in guiding you to the specifics on this? Depending on how much traffic you're getting, this could honestly be well worth it.
Best,
Zack

SEO Implications For a Technical Functionality Fix
Our Magento based affiliate extension is not working, due to a conflict with the Varnish caching system. Varnish has a known bug which does not allow multiple cookies to be set. Our workaround involves redirecting any request with the affiliate tracking parameter to the HTTPS version of the site. Varnish does not run on HTTPs and therefore our affiliate cookie will be set. Note: the main content of our site runs on HTTP. My SEO concern is how to handle this for the search engines. We have a few things to consider: Redirect: Should we use a 301 or 302? Canonical: It seems to make sense to include a canonical on the HTTP version of the site without the affiliate tracking parameter - right? Robots Meta Tags: "noindex, follow" or "index, follow" Am I missing something? Thanks for your time and consideration!

Advise about Social Sharing between two loosely affiliated website - (retweets/fb cross sharing)
So basically, I have two websites. One being my Primary website and another which is very Niche/Seasonal. Now the Niche website received a penalty, and was later re-included however google traffic has been extremely limited since being reindexed. (bing never had a problem, still top ranked) I don't directly link back and forth between the two websites because its not worth hurting my primary websites ranking. I'm sure google knows I own both anyway, as they are on the same webmaster tools but the Niche site was kicked for spammy link building & its been an endless process removing them all. Anyway, with that being my concern. Would it be acceptable to cross share facebook posts, retweet and do things like that on occasion? My primary reason for asking is because the Niche website has a very large social following, so I would like to share post/tweets from my Primary site when its relevant and vice versa. Appreciate any suggestions/comments. Thanks!

How to prevent affiliates from bringing negative SEO?
Hi there, I'm just about to integrate iDevAffiliate network for one of my sites, however it occurred to me that affiliates may (unfortunately) resort to black hat methods without me becoming aware of it, which could pass negative link juice to my site. Is there any way to use affiliate networks such as iDev without causing this problem? I was thinking of simply using a different URL, but the problem is that 301 redirects won't mitigate the issue. Thanks!

SEO and Affiliate Links
Hello, We run a travel related website and we started to run our own affilate newtwork to promote the sales of our products. At the moment the affilate links pont to a spacific affilate url in order to tack conversions : abcweb.com/affiliate/nameqaz I'm wondering how is the best way to run a private affilate programm considering SEO: Is there a way yo benefit from those links ? What are the best strategies to do this? If yes, Is there any benefit from redirecting 301 those links to the original page (the one accesible to google and the one we want to rank for) or is it better to use a king of canonical method. Thanks a lot for sharing you experiences , giving your opinion and indicate resources. Best Regards Daria
