Huge Google index on E-commerce site
-
Hi Guys,
I got a question which i can't understand.
I'm working on a e-commerce site which recently got a CMS update including URL updates.
We did a lot of 301's on the old url's (around 3000 /4000 i guess) and submitted a new sitemap (around 12.000 urls, of which 10.500 are indexed). The strange thing is.. When i check the indexing status in webmaster tools Google tells me there are over 98.000 url's indexed.
Doing the site:domainx.com Google tells me there are 111.000 url's indexed.Another strange thing which another forum member describes here :
And next to that old url's (which have a 301 for about a month now) keep showing up in the index.
Does anyone know what i could do to solve the problem?

Allright guys, thanks alot for the answers.
Gonna try some things out coming monday.
Canonical url's and pagination (rel=prev) will work i guess.
The hard part is, i'm working on this site with a development company that tells me they can url redirect all the 404's to the homepage while they must be redirected either to other products or category pages.
So only solution is that i have to do that by hand, one by one via a tool they build. But it's a hell of a job!
@ Andy , I checked it and it actually says :
Total indexed : 98.000
Ever crawled: 929.762And when i check the questionmark at total indexed it says:
Total number of url's added to Google index. Thanks again for your answers

something to check would be in WMT if you go to the advanced section of the index status chart you should see currently in the index and ever indexed, it sounds like you are just seeing the ever indexed number which could be huge for almost any website.

We had similar issues with too many indexed pages (about 100,000 pages) for a site with about 3500 pages.
By setting a canonical url on each page and also preventing google from indexing and crawling some of the urls (robots.txt and meta noindex) we are now down to 3500 urls, The benefit is (besides less duplicate content), much faster indexing of new pages.

Hi,
A couple of things could be and probably are at work in this situation.
1. For the 301 redirects, if the site is big (12000 urls), depending on how often and much google crawls the site it could easily take more than a month for it to find and identify all the new urls/301 redirects etc and then update its cache of indexed pages. So in this case its is a matter of patience. If the 301s are implemented correctly, they will eventually be indexed.
2. You have done 3 or 4000 301s, for the rest of the the old 12000 urls what are you showing, a 404? It is a big undertaking to redirect that many pages, but worth thinking about the technical side of what is happening, part of your 98000 indexed urls could be a mix of old and new if the old ones are not being redirected to a page that clearly states that they are either somewhere else (301) or no longer available (404).
3. A common problem with e-shops is duplicate content due to various things like product filters, search string variables etc that are going to pages that are indexable and do not have rel canonical tags. A good way to see if this is the case is to search for likely url parts in your cms that could lead to this issue (maybe you have filters that result in urls like xxx?search=123 or xxx?manufacturer=23 etc) and then do a google search along the lines of site:xxx.com inurl:manufacturer which should give a good idea of if/where you have this problem. This case of duplicate content could be even more pronounced if it was occurring on your old cms urls AND your new cms urls and a combination of these are in your 98000 total.
Hope that helps!

Google Is Indexing my 301 Redirects to Other sites
Long story but now i have a few links from my site 301 redirecting to youtube videos or eCommerce stores. They carry a considerable amount of traffic that i benefit from so i can't take them down, and that traffic is people from other websites, so basically i have backlinks from places that i don't own, to my redirect urls (Ex. http://example.com/redirect) My problem is that google is indexing them and doesn't let them go, i have tried blocking that url from robots.txt but google is still indexing it uncrawled, i have also tried allowing google to crawl it and adding noindex from robots.txt, i have tried removing it from GWT but it pops back again after a few days. Any ideas? Thanks!

Moving a lot of pdfs to main site. Worth trying to get them indexed?
On my main site we link to pdfs that are located on another one of our domains. The only thing that is on this other domain is the pdfs. It was setup really poorly so I am going to redesign everything and probably move it. Is it worthwhile trying to add these pdfs to our sitemap and to try and get them indexed? They are all connected to a current item, but the content is original.

Google is indexing the wrong pages
I have been having problems with Google indexing my website since mid May. I haven't made any changes to my website which is wordpress. I have a page with the title 'Peterborough Cathedral wedding', I search Google for 'wedding Peteborough Cathedral', this is not a competitive search phrase and I'd expect to find my blog post on page one. Instead, half way down page 4 I find Google has indexed www.weddingphotojournalist.co.uk/blog with the title 'wedding photojournalist | Portfolio', what google has indexed is a link to the blog post and not the blog post itself. I repeated this for several other blog posts and keywords and found similar results, most of which don't make any sense at all - A search for 'Menorca wedding photography' used to bring up one of my posts at the top of page one. Now it brings up a post titled 'La Mare wedding photography Jersey" which happens to have a link to the Menorca post at the bottom of the page. A search for 'Broadoaks country house weddng photography' brings up 'weddingphotojournalist | portfolio' which has a link to the Broadoaks post. a search for 'Blake Hall wedding photography' does exactly the same. In this case Google is linking to www.weddingphotojournalist.blog again, this is a page of recent blog posts. Could this be a problem with my sitemap? Or the Yoast SEO plugin? or a problem with my wordpress theme? Or is Google just a bit confused?

Huge Google Dance For Some Rankings. What Gives?
I've got a relatively new website (launched at the beginning of June 2013). For some keywords I'm targeting, it first ranked around page 15. It made huge jumps to finally rank on page 2 or 3. Since then, it goes back to page 15 and then back to page 3. It does this every now and then. Any ideas?

200 for Site Visitors, 404 for Google (but possibly 200?)
A 2nd question we have about another site we're working with... Currently if a visitor to their site accesses a page that has no content in a section, it shows a message saying that there is no information currently available and the page shows 200 for the user, but shows 404 for Google. They are asking us if it would be better to change the pages to 200's for Google and what impact that might have considering there would be different pages displaying the same 'no information here' message.

Migrating a site from a standalone site to a subdivision of large .gov.uk site
The scenario We’ve been asked by a client, a Non-Government Organisation who are being absorbed by a larger government ministry, for help with the SEO of their site. They will be going from a reasonably large standalone site to a small sub-directory on a high authority government site and they want some input on how best to maintain their rankings. They will be going from the Number 1 ranked site in their niche (current site domainRank 59) to being a sub directory on a domainRank 100 site). The current site will remain, but as a members only resource, behind a paywall. I’ve been checking to see the impact that it had on a related site, but that one has put a catch all 302 redirect on it’s pages so is losing the benefit of a it’s historical authority. My thoughts Robust 301 redirect set up to pass as much benefit as possible to the new pages. Focus on rewriting content to promote most effective keywords – would suggest testing of titles, meta descriptions etc but not sure how often they will be able to edit the new site. ‘We have moved’ messaging going out to webmasters of existing linking sites to try to encourage as much revision of linking as possible. Development of link-bait to try and get the new pages seen. Am I going about this the right way? Thanks in advance. Phil

Can you see the 'indexing rules' that are in place for your own site?
By 'index rules' I mean the stipulations that constitute whether or not a given page will be indexed. If you can see them - how?

How do Google Site Search pages rank
We have started using Google Site Search (via an XML feed from Google) to power our search engines. So we have a whole load of pages we could link to of the format /search?q=keyword, and we are considering doing away with our more traditional category listing pages (e.g. /biology - not powered by GSS) which account for much of our current natural search landing pages. My question is would the GoogleBot treat these search pages any differently? My fear is it would somehow see them as duplicate search results and downgrade their links. However, since we are coding the XML from GSS into our own HTML format, it may not even be able to tell.
