UGC News articles
-
Hi! Quick question regarding UGC...
On our site - http://designrfix.com - we have a /news section (which contains about 40 000 news items) - shown in the right sidebar at the bottom
I recently changed the /news (and all subpages) section to noindex and asked a removal on Google Webmaster Tools... was this a good idea? Those pages are low content pages and the bounce rate is really high since all articles are external sites.

Thanks for sharing that.
I have thought about opening our news to visitor submissions. Right now we do it all ourselves (about eight to ten items per day).
I worry that visitors will submit a lot of spam and self-promotion that will decrease our quality. If weeding takes a few hours per day then we are better off doing it inhouse.
Thanks again for sharing.

Great thanks again,
We get between 40 and 50+ per day and yes i take the time to weed out all the spam, which is almost always 1/3rd of submissions. quite time consuming. (a few hours a day)

I've put back the /news items as "noindex, follow" and as well as some internal links.
Yes. I think that is an improvement.
ps. All of our external links are nofollow.
I didn't realize that. Good idea on a blog where users can submit items.
pps. I had to put some disallow rules in our robots.txt to remove the news category and pages. I'm guessing i still have to keep those rules in place correct?
I allow the category pages on my blog to be indexed. They bring in thousands of visitors per day.
Last question... would you also keep pagination as "noindex, follow" or open it all up?
On my sites the pagination is noindex follow.
A couple questions for you...
Do you receive a lot of user submitted news items?
Do you think that you get a lot of spam submissions? How much time do you have to spend weeding the spam?

Thanks EGOL!

I have a similar section on one of my sites and I believe that it was part of a Panda problem in one of the early Panda updates. I used noindex / follow on those pages and the site recovered in a few weeks.
On that site I have about 150 category pages and they pull in a ton of traffic.
Your posts seem to include some UGC and they appear to be receiving followed links. Perhaps linking to bad neighborhoods is an important concern.... and a lot of your internal links are nofollowed. If this was my site all of the internal links would be followed and the external UGC links would be nofollowed.

Best structure for a news website including main menu nav
Just looking for thoughts and opinions on the best way to set up the main nav on a news website that covers a specific professional services sector. There are news items, archived news, blog, events, but also main menu links to the numerous news categories that go to a page listing the news articles under that category (as created in Wordpress when publishing the article). I'm thinking that having these off the main nav is diluting the juice to the more important pages including the events and the news page? Just thinking about how to rearrange and consolidate. Any thoughts on how people would structure something like this?

How to break the news to a client?
I have been hired to work with a dating website to help with some SEO. The website itself is in a lot of trouble from an SEO standpoint. I have been working on a plan with them for how to fix their problems. They are currently averaging 1.6k unique users a month and wants to get to 50k in 3 months and 200k in 6 months. This seems entirely unreasonable without spending a lot of money on SEM/Social/Other marketing avenues.

How/when do you trim your article pages?
Hi all, I wanted to ask what have you all done to your article section that has made a difference to the site's SEO performance? What's the criteria for deciding which articles top cut or 301 redirect to the main page For example: 1. you have a slightly irrelevant article to your website topic, low conversions, but a lot of quality links to page, but no primary keywords in article title. 2. You have a slightly irrelevant article to your website, low conversion, but a lot of quality links AND you have your site's primary keywords in article title 3. You have a relevant topic to the site, but low engagement and low conversions Thanks for all your help!

Which page will rank higher, my main article or the sub article linking from it?
Hi all, Can you help me figure this one out? I'm currently creating content for my website and I very badly want to know which page will rank higher in Google, my main article that has some keywords that are and links to my sub-article, or my sub-article which is optimized for those keywords? I will demonstrate with an example since I'm not sure my question is clear: If I have an article that talks about different kinds of candy and it links to a sub-article that will elaborate on specific candies like a mint candy ,which page will rank for mint candies. Until today I believed that if my sub-article which is linked from my main-article will rank for mint candies since it gets the support from my main article.Lately when experimenting this I found my thoughts to be wrong. Can anyone help me with this one?Any insights? Thanks, Leebi

My site's articles seem to never show up in Google.
This is in regards to a previous post that was answered for me:
On-Page Optimization | | Ctrl-Alt-Success
http://moz.com/community/q/my-site-s-name-not-ranking-in-google I was talking to a friend and he suggested I try to type in an article in google with the exact name followed by my site's domain name without the .com For example, I have an article entitled: "MULTITASKING IS BAD FOR YOU, MKAY?" Obviously it's a title most would not word in that way. I typed it in and followed it up with my site's domain minus .com. So "MULTITASKING IS BAD FOR YOU, MKAY? ctrl-alt-success" But I'm not even getting listed in the search. There's got to be something I'm missing. I understand backlinks are important for ranking, but when I'm trying to find an exact match along with my site's url minus the .com? I just have this strong hunch that something is awry. NOTE: It seems this is only with google. If I use Bing or Yahoo, it comes up just fine.0 -
Why Isnt My New Article Indexed?
I posted this article last night: http://www.londontri.com/325/tomtom-runner-gps-watch-review It didn't appear in Google's index this morning despite me pointing a few high quality links to it (not keyword optimized links, just links from high quality forum posts) On closer examination I thought that the problem could be due to a keyword stuffing penalty so I have made sure that I am not repeating too many words/word combinations using a keyword density checker but the article is still not indexed. Any ideas what could be going on?
