Dynamic pages -windows server
-
Hi all,
Hope I get an answer on clients site which I believe is hosted on a windows shared server. The output of the site is something like this:
http://www.domainname.com/catering-sub.asp?maincate_id=6&maincate_name=Barware
I am looking to get a URL friendly output for the site - as far as my knowledge I believe Htaccess doesn't work on this type of hosting? thoughts?
Thanks in advance

Hi,
You are right. For Windows server, .htaccess file doesn't work. You need some setting in your windows IIS server. URL writing facility is not available for less than 7 version. If your IIS version is IIS7 or greater then you can solve all SEO related problem by given link http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2010/04/20/tip-trick-fix-common-seo-problems-using-the-url-rewrite-extension.aspx
Hope my answer will solve you problem.

Well regardless of what type of server they are on, those URLs were generated by whatever program the previous developer used to create the site.
I would re-do the site or at least rename all of the pages. You can do a sitewide or page by page redirect in a Windows IIS Server. It's actually much simpler to do if you have server access (which is rare/impossible when using a 3rd party hosting provider but only time i've ever messed with IIS servers was running them in-house on our own server farms..)
Anyway, it's literally a setting in the domain itself on the IIS platform (which looks a lot like Explorer). You can contact the web host to do this, or if you're lucky enough to have access just google IIS 301 but be sure to note what version of IIS you are running. I was on IIS 7 for example and everything was much different than 9.
The longest/hardest part of this will be redoing all the links and renaming all of the pages. Quite the project. I think it'd be a great time to reassess the site as a whole.. not sure what is working well or not but might as well consider all of it at this point.
Hope I'm being helpful...

Will Google Judge Duplicate Content on Responsive Pages to be Keyword Spamming?
I have a website for my small business, and hope to improve the search results position for 5 landing pages. I recently modified my website to make it responsive (mobile friendly). I was not able to use Bootstrap; the layout of the pages is a bit unusual and doesn't lend itself to the options Bootstrap provides. Each landing page has 3 main div's - one for desktop, one for tablet, one for phone.

The text content displayed in each div is the same. Only one of the 3 div’s is visible; the user’s screen width determines which div is visible. When I wrote the HTML for the page, I didn't want each div to have identical text. I worried that
when Google indexed the page it would see the same text 3 times, and would conclude that keyword spamming was occurring. So I put the text in just one div. And when the page loads jQuery copies the text from the first div to the other two div's. But now I've learned that when Google indexes a page it looks at both the page that is served AND the page that is rendered. And in my case the page that is rendered - after it loads and the jQuery code is executed – contains duplicate text content in three div's. So perhaps my approach - having the served page contain just one div with text content – fails to help, because Google examines the rendered page, which has duplicate text content in three div's. Here is the layout of one landing page, as served by the server. 1000 words of text goes here. No text. jQuery will copy the text from div id="desktop" into here. No text. jQuery will copy the text from div id="desktop" into here. ===================================================================================== My question is: Will Google conclude that keyword spamming is occurring because of the duplicate content the rendered page contains, or will it realize that only one of the div's is visible at a time, and the duplicate content is there only to achieve a responsive design? Thank you!0 -
Joomla Core Pages Delisted
Hey Everyone, This query may be more for a Joomla developer or someone that has had a similar issue. I'm not really looking for answers like, "check Google Search Console" or anything like that. We have a client who recently had all of their core pages delisted in Google but the blog is still being displayed in search results. For example, if you search "company name" they have a blog post that ranks #13 or so organically. I tested Google Search Console and Google is saying that the site is temporarily unavailable. We haven't made any changes or updates to Joomla's core structure so I'm unsure as to where this change is coming from. Here are some items we've checked: 1. Site searches within Google, resulted in seeing core pages are not indexed but blog pages are 2. Google Search Console - looked for manual actions (none found), looked at sitemap errors (nothing mentioned), looked at robots.txt (no issues here), attempted to fetch the site as Google (temporarily unavailable). 3. Called the hosting company (Rackspace) to discuss potential issues. They were extremely helpful but we were unable to find anything. The blog is actually a Module that was added so I'm thinking something has changed to block Google bots from the core Joomla structure but it hasn't blocked them from the blog structure. Without putting the company name or url on blast, has anyone heard of or experienced anything like this? Any help or insights would be much appreciated!

Should i not use hyphens in web page titles? Google Penalty for hyphens?
all the page titles in my site have hyphens between the words like this: http://texas.com/texas-plumbers.html I have seen tests where hyphenated domain names ranked lower than non hyphenated domain names. Does this mean my pages are being penalized for hyphens or is this only in the domain that it is penalized? If I create new pages should I not use hyphens in the page titles when there are two or more words in the title? If I changed all my page titles to eliminate the hyphens, I would lose all my rankings correct? My site is 12 years old and if I changed all these titles I'm guessing that each page would be thrown in the google sandbox for several months, is this true? Thanks mozzers!

Will changing product from Grouped to Simple on my magento category page affect my SEO?
Hi all, A category page on my site http://www.porcelainsuperstore.co.uk/wood-effect.html currently ranks number 3 on Google for the keyword "Wood Effect Tiles" We're currently reorganising some of our product and I would like to know if this is going to affect the SEO and ranking for the above page and keyword. The majority of products on that page are magento grouped products. I would like to change the page so that it displays only the different constituent simple products rather than the grouped products on the category page. My question is, will this have any impact on SEO? I intend on leaving all other data on the category page the same - so the metadata and the description/title etc. Any help/comments would be much appreciated! Ben

Splash Pages For App Downlowds
Hi, We currently have a very simple splash page that Android and iPhone users see when they land on our homepage. The screen gives them the option to download our app or move on to the full website. If they choose to go to the site they are redirected to our homepage. Is this going to have any negative impacts on our rankings? I'm not sure how the Google bot treats this type of page. We have also talked about replacing the splash page with a modal window, but I'm concerned that this will increase the load time of the home page on mobile devices. Does anyone have any experience with a similar situation or any advice? Thanks in advance!

How can we improve our e-commerce site architecture to help best preserve Page Authority?
Today I installed the SEOMoz toolbar for Firefox (very cool, highly recommended). I was comparing our site http://www.ccisolutions.com to this competitor: http://www.uniquesquared.com For the most part, the deeper I go in our site the more the page authority drops. We have a few exceptions where the page authority of a subcategory page is actually better than the cat. page one level up. In comparison, when I was looking at http://www.uniquesquared.com I noticed that their page authority stays at "21" on every single category page I visit. Are you seeing what I'm seeing? Is this potentially a problem with the tool bar or, is there something significantly different about their site architecture that allows them to maintain that PA across all category and sub category pages? Is there something fundamentally wrong with our (http://www.ccisolutions.com) site architecture? I understand that we have longer URLs, but this is an old store with a lot of SKUs, so we have decided not to remove the /category/ and /product/ from the URLs because the 301 redirects that would result wouldn't pass all of the authority they've built up over the years. Interested to know viewpoints on the site architecture and how it might be improved. Thanks!
