How to switch brand domain and address previous use of domain
-
We recently acquired a new domain to replace existing as it better fits our brand. We have little/no organic value on existing domain so switching is not an issue. However the newly acquired domain was previously used in a different industry and has inbound links with significant spam scores. How can we let Google know that these links are not valid for our business and start rebuilding reputation of the domain? Disavow tool?

Great response, Thomas!

when the migration is made, you obviously need to check your all and monitor your backlinks carefully. Some of they may can be damaged (we've got this problem after domain name migration). I would recommend to check all your web site for broken links also (moz, sreamingfrog) and broken backlinks (atomseo, ahrefs).

you need to check your Backlinks on the new domain I agree you should definitely not start from a negative place.

Make sure you did the 301 redirects that are needed to keep your old URLs pointing to your new URLs

Howdy,
This brings into question if you should use the new domain name at all. You are going to have to start at a "negative" SEO standpoint and you may or may not be able to work your way out of it. Here is what I would do.
Setup Google Search Console and Google Analytics for the new domain. Start getting some data on how Google looks at this domain and if it sends traffic. If you do not have access to the old website setup, look at the Search Console errors to see what pages Google expects to see and get an idea of the URL structure. You can also use the wayback machine potentially for this. Search Console will also give you sites that link to this domain and what URLs they were pointing to.
Just because this domain has links from sites with significant spam scores according to Moz, does not mean that your new domain is penalized, it just has a higher potential.
Perform a link audit using the links you find in OSE, Google Search Console and any other tools such as Majestic, Ahrefs, etc. This will allow you to find all the bad links. Go ahead and disavow the low quality links at the domain level.
All the pages that these "bad links" pointed, just let them 404. I would let every referenced URL from the old site 404. Do not 301 redirect them to the home page or to new pages you have setup. The 301 will not pass any link equity unless they are semantically related, and it sounds like you are setting up a completely new site. Don't worry about all the 404 errors in Google Search Console. Just check them to make sure they are for pages from the old site, vs pages on the new site. The 404 errors will fade away. Likewise, any bad (and good) link equity to the pages are gone as they are going to pages that do not exist.
Some folks around here would say that if you simply 404 the old pages, you do not need to disavow, but you would not be able to do this for the home page. Plus, if you want a conservative, "belt and suspenders" approach to eliminate link equity from the old links, this has you covered.
Finally, even if you only have a little organic SEO on your current site, I would 301 redirect it to the new site to cover that base.
This will hopefully start you from zero, but just know that you will still have an uphill battle. Google has looked at this site before and had it associated with "Red Widgets" and so if the new site is about "Blue Bunnies" it may take a while for the basic classification to change in the Google system, let alone the impact of links etc. Really take some time to consider if you feel like the new domain name is that much better than your old domain name, or some other domain that is related to your current site and does not have a significant spam score.

A Tale of Two (Competing) Domains
Bit of a weird one but I'm hoping someone can help our team of two sort it out. I'm a copywriter/marketer who's been learning SEO on-the-go, along with our web developer, for the past ~9 months. We've inherited what I consider to be a mess of a situation involving two main e-commerce sites. The company has a sporadic history of spinning off brands, in hopes to either build business in a new market or sell the brands off or what-have-you. The original company rose to prominence manufacturing disc packaging and selling it to software companies, which has obviously been on the way out for some time now. So they've dipped into a handful of other business products for marketing/office use. The company used to sell all products, in individual AND box quantity, on one site (since 1996). In 2012 they decided to move individual quantity sales to a different site with the domain name of one of the brands, focus it more on consumers and small business, etc. We have more flexibility to make changes to the consumer site, so in my opinion it's in better shape. The consumer site (DA 39) offers "retail pricing" with flat rate shipping and free shipping over $25. The b2b site (DA 37) offers "industry pricing" with a weight-based shipping model. Traffic on the business site is down 70% since 2010. We've also been asked to take certain products down in hopes that viewers will pick up the phone and buy a customized version from a sales rep instead. Since probably 3/4 of the products are on both sites, nearly all the category and product pages are competing in SERPs. Not only that, but the business site's product pages invariably link to the corresponding page on the consumer site -- hundreds of links pointing to the consumer site. We know for a fact that people are price checking product+shipping between our own two sites. The issues are further exacerbated because we have even more spinoff domains -- an informative site for a particularly successful product line, an e-commerce site just for vinyl products, etc. etc. So I guess I'm trying to figure out how to make the most of the situation we're now in. Our hands are somewhat tied because we're not 'decision makers'. But we've got a meeting tomorrow to talk about the future of one of the sites, so I figure I at least want to be informed. I am concerned about making further decisions without considering the consequences, especially when our bonuses are tied to web sales... I feel like this is just scratching the surface of the problem so let me know if you guys have further questions.

Buying a domain banned by google
Hi , I came across a super domain for my business but found out that it was a great domain with 100s of link backs but is now banned by Google search engine meaning Google does not index content from that domain. Since the domains linkbacks are from my domin does it make sense to but that domain and redirect those link backs to another (301) and hope that the new domain gets some juice ... I know it is sounding crazy and may not be the best thing to do ethically but still wanted to check if its possible to get some juice.. Rgds Avinash

Noindex, Nofollow to previous domain
Hi, My programmer recently did a horrible mistkae by adding noindex, nofollow to our website without me noticing for two days. At the same time he did it we bought a new domain and redirected the old domain to the new domain: The Old domain is: http://www.websitebuildersworld.com and the new one is: http://www.websiteplanet.com Now unfortunatly I didn't notice the noindex, nofollow when it was on the old domain and I redirected it to websiteplanet.com before I fixed the noindex, nofollow. I fixed the problem around 10 hours ago on the new domain (www.websiteplanet.com) but the old domain didn't get indexed back (yet), so for example if you search for WebsiteBuildersWorld in google you will not reach the homepage as google deleted it because of the noindex, nofollow. My question is:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Ouzan
Do you think that it will be fixed and google will retrieve websitebuildersworld homepage to his search results and then redirect it to websiteplanet? Or because I redirected websitebuildersworld.com to websiteplanet.com before letting google crawling websitebuildersworld.com without the noindex,no follow it wouldn't get indexed again? I hope I explained the problem good enough. Looking forward for your valuable replies. Thanks.0 -
Meta Keywords: Should we use them or not?
I am working through our site and see that meta keywords are being used heavily and unnecessarily. Each of our info pages will have 2 or 3 keyword phrases built into them. Should we just duplicate the keyword phrases into the meta keyword field, should put in additional keywords beyond or not use it at all? Thoughts and opinions appreciated

Root domain or sub domain? WWW. or NOT WWW......
I am a little confused! I use vidahost whom I have to say I find very helpful. I currently have the domains www.fentonit.co.uk and www.fentonit.com, now the websites was set up using the www.fentonit.com and I have www.fentonit.co.uk as a parked domain pointed to the www.fentonit.com. Confused yet? Now because I wanted the website to show www.fentonit.co.uk I added some code I was given by the guys to the .hta access file and viola up it comes as the .co.uk which is what I wanted. So if your still here and havent A: Killed yourself yet or B: Went to the Pub Then my questions are: 1. Is there going to be an issue from an SEO point of view having my site set up this way and if so how do I resolve it? 2. Would I be better using the root domain fentonit.co.uk (I think this is the root domain, although it iscurrently parked and pointed) as opposed to the sub www domain?.......and finally.......? 3. If it is set up as I stated what exactly would be my root domain, would it be the .co.uk or the .com? Sorry and I completely understand if your not interested in answering it but if you do.....Thanks in advance and I'll take you to the pub...lol Craig www.fentonit.co.uk ( i think)

How do you implement dynamic SEO-friendly URLs using Ajax without using hashbangs?
We're building a new website platform and are using Ajax as the method for allowing users to select from filters. We want to dynamically insert elements into the URL as the filters are selected so that search engines will index multiple combinations of filters. We're struggling to see how this is possible using symfony framework. We've used www.gizmodo.com as an example of how to achieve SEO and user-friendly URLs but this is only an example of achieving this for static content. We would prefer to go down a route that didn't involve hashbangs if possible. Does anyone have any experience using hashbangs and how it affected their site? Any advice on the above would be gratefully received.
