Bloking pages in roborts.txt that are under a redirected subdomain
-
Hi Everyone,
I have a lot of Marketo landing pages that I don't want to show in SERP. Adding the noindex meta tag for each page will be too much, I have thousands of pages.
Blocking it in roborts.txt could have been an option, BUT, the subdomain homepage is redirected to my main domain (with a 302) so I may confuse search engines ( should they follow the redirect or should they block)
marketo.mydomain.com is redirected to www.mydomain.com
disallow: / (I think this will be confusing with the redirect)
I don't have folders, all pages are under the subdomain, so I can't block folders in Robots.txt also
Would anyone had this scenario or any suggestions?
I appreciate your thoughts here.
Thank you
Rachel

Thank you so much for you answer!
the home page in the subdomain is redirected but none of the actual pages in the subdomain are, and because there are so many of them, it would be easier to block them in robots.txt, even if there is small change that Google will still index them. But because the home page is redirected, I don't want to confuse Google with a Disallow: /
Could I do Disallow: / and then Allow: /homepage.html

Under usual circumstances, Google won't index redirecting addresses which it considers to be a shallow form of 'doorway' page (Google doesn't like to rank those). If I am reading your post right, no pages on the redirected sub-domain can be visited as they all now redirect. Google should start dropping those old URLs from its index automatically. It's important to note that you should be using 301s to eventually de-index the old URLs. If you're using 302s then you're telling Google that the old pages are only being redirected temporarily and they will return (which could mess with indexation)
If I am reading your post wrong and some pages are still live on the old subdomain and are not redirecting, and you want Google to redirect most addresses but some are staying (for whatever reason) and you still want to de-index those specific ones, Meta no-index (sorry) really is your best bet! Robots.txt tells Google not to crawl a page but it doesn't tell Google not to index a URL if external metrics (inbound links) are strong enough. Both are 'directives' and Google is forced to obey neither
I think from what you are saying, I'd just leave the redirects and let Google do its work. Make sure they're 301s, though. You're right that Robots.txt might end up confusing things. Robots.txt can also sometimes 'kill' the SEO authority of a page. If you did that for all the redirecting pages, no equity would flow through your 301s (hazardous)

How effective are 301 redirects in passing page rank?
I have a blog which is ranking well for certain terms, and would like to repurpose it to better explain these terms it is ranking for, including updating the url to the new term the blog will be about. The plan being to 301 redirect the old url to new. In the past, I've done this with other pages, and have actually lost much of the rankings that I had earned on the original URL. What is your take on this? Maybe repurpose blog, but maintain original URL just to be on the safe side? Thanks

301 Redirects from Subdomain to Location Pages
I have a client site that is getting redesigned. Its a multi location service provider. Currently (for whatever reason) the location pages are sub domains. https://<location-name>.site.com/ In the new design the locations will be on the main domain. https://site.com/locations/<location-name> We are considering using 301 redirects from the current sub domains to the new location pages on the main domain. The current sub domains are setup on a multi-site with A records for each one in our GoDaddy account. Would like to get feedback on any unforeseen SEO issues that anyone might have input on.

3,511 Pages Indexed and 3,331 Pages Blocked by Robots
Morning, So I checked our site's index status on WMT, and I'm being told that Google is indexing 3,511 pages and the robots are blocking 3,331. This seems slightly odd as we're only disallowing 24 pages on the robots.txt file. In light of this, I have the following queries: Do these figures mean that Google is indexing 3,511 pages and blocking 3,331 other pages? Or does it mean that it's blocking 3,331 pages of the 3,511 indexed? As there are only 24 URLs being disallowed on robots.text, why are 3,331 pages being blocked? Will these be variations of the URLs we've submitted? Currently, we don't have a sitemap. I know, I know, it's pretty unforgivable but the old one didn't really work and the developers are working on the new one. Once submitted, will this help? I think I know the answer to this, but is there any way to ascertain which pages are being blocked? Thanks in advance! Lewis

Rel=Canonical on a page with 302 redirection existing
Hi SEOMoz! Can I have the rel=canonical tag on a URL page that has a 302 redirection? Does this harm the search engine friendliness of a content page / website? Thanks! Steve

301 Redirect From Dynamic Page To Static
I want to 301 redirect all "id" and "type" numbers from my page dynamic.php page (I have thousands of IDs and thousands of Types) all to a single URL. So for example the following.... www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=1&type=5 www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=2&type=5 www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=3&type=5 www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=1&type=6 www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=2&type=6 www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=3&type=6 ...would all be sent to: www.mysite.com/page.html How can this be done without doing a redirect for each ID/Type?

Can I do a redirect to a new domain name only a couple of weeks after having redirected to another domain?
I have a client with two website with very similar content. Both had a lot of inbound links and performed fairly well in SERPS. We recently combined both sites and have redirected one of the domains to the other. The traffic dipped slightly initially, but is recovering nicely. Now the client registered a new domain name he would like to use for the site. Should I wait a few weeks for everything to settle down after the first redirect/consolidation of sites before doing a new redirect to a new domain name, or should I not worry about having any issues with doing it right away?

301 Redirect Domain or 301 Redirect Domain + Interior Pages
Hello - My company acquired another company in our industry and our IT team immediately set up the acquired companies domain name as a an alias to our site. This created a duplicate version of our website under another domain name and Google started ranking interior pages from the aliased acquired site for several top keywords that were previously held by our real site. Should we 301 redirect just the top level domain name of the acquired site to the real site or 301 redirect the top level domain name and the interior pages on the acquired site to help ensure that our real domain will take back the rankings it once had? Thanks!
