Targeting Keywords from the homepage

I tend to focus on two or three main keywords to target from the homepage. In fact come to think of it from all pages.
Do you target up to 10 keywords of more from one page. Taking longer tail keywords into consideration.
Granted the limits to any phrase or keyword group.

A focus on two or three main keywords on your page is perfectly appropriate, even for longer tail keywords. It may be recommended to use longer tailed keywords for pages on your site appropriate for such keywords. As well, it is recommended to put the keyword(s) as close to the beginning of each tag as possible. Keywords can be combined to create longer tail keywords, but only if they are relevant to each other; try to put two unrelated phrases together will look like spam. If your business is located in a certain area, using long tail keywords with location can help your results; with other keywords, your site can still rank for longer tail keyword due to natural relevancy. With a focus of more than three keywords, your tags will be bulky and read unnaturally.

Definitely helps if you have good proximity of your keyword in title. A relevant Meta Desc helps with CTR only.
Just make sure that the content on the page is relevant to the title.

My experience your main keyword must be the first keyword on the meta title or description.
Would you both go with that ?

In my experience maximum opportunities come from assigning no more than two or at most three primary phrases per page, then including up to three or at most four very closely related additional phrases within the body. Those additional phrases go to support the primary phrases mostly, however the total combination eventually leads to exponential long-tail opportunities that you don't need to figure out on your own if the content is really well written for the user.
Trying to get more than that in there almost always leads to topical dilution.

I would target one specific keyword per page and just make sure the content on each page is valuable and targeted because that's what visitors want.
Just keep it natural and you will be surprised at the number of additional long-tail keywords each specific page will rank for.
On some of my older sites I would have approximately 80 pages each dedicated to a specific keyword. Eventually, I would often rank for 16,000+ long-tail keywords (depending on the niche). I didn't consciously go after those 16,000 keywords. I just went after 80. But Google found my specific content pages relevant for a lot more than just the initial 80 keywords.
Many of these long-tail keywords may only be used a few times each month, so it doesn't make sense to target them specifically. However, if you write compelling content, the long tail keywords will follow, and so will the targeted traffic.

Disparity between new and old keyword planner
Hi everyone! While performing keyword research using both Google's old and new Keyword Planner, I've noticed a disparity between the two tools. In many cases, the old tool gives a much larger monthly search volume than the new tool. How to use long tail keyword?
Hi I read in most of the SEO blogs that using longtail keywords can help us in our search rankings. But how can we actually get a traffic from longtail keyword if that particular longtail keyword is not having any search volume. For example, if I wanted to rank for the keyword "SEO" which has a huge search volume of 5,500 per month and if I wanted to concentrate on one of its longtail keyword "SEO basics for beginners" which has average search volume of only 40 per month, how can it help me?

Hi Mozzers,This is probably a nooby question, but I was wondering how you guys end up deciding if a Keyword is too hard to rank for? Also vice versa, when do you decide that a keyword is too low volume to rank for so you try to rank for a harder keyword? Eg.

Potential Keyword Cannibalisation
Hi, I am concerned that our website's rankings are currently being affected by KW cannibalisation. We don't rank too badly for our target keywords but they could, of course, be better, especially as the niche is very competitive! One thing that is bothering me is that our internal pages do not rank well for these KWs and instead it is the homepage appearing in the rankings. This is despite the fact that the internal pages are optimised for the different keywords. Basically the HP is also targeting these same keywords and I was wondering if this is affecting our rankings overall? I am not keen to risk changing the homepage in case our rankings suffer massively and we drop out of Google completely. If anyone could offer some advice then that would be great. Is it simply a case of trying to get external links pointing to these internal pages? Would internal linking to them prove effective as well? Cheers Tom

Site has multiple services, how to target multiple keywords and what to to about citations
Hi i managing a site that has 3 main services its a hotel, a restaurant and a brewery. It has the word brewery in the name and URL and has for years primarily pushed the brewery side and that is doing well its has a good DA and lots of links point back to its home page. Now the problem is it doesn't rank very well for the term hotel or restaurant, theres only 2 referring domains links pointing to its hotel page. All its hotel citations point to the homepage (which is mainly optimised for the keyword brewery) should i update the citations to point to the hotel page which has been optimised for the search term hotel? or should I leave those and just create new citation pointing to the hotel page. Should i right a few blog posts about the businesses hotel and link them to the hotels page? and then I also then do the same for restaurant? I hope i've explained myself well and would appreciate the advice

New Keyword Planning Tool
In the past we have used google analytics keyword tool to evaluate a keyword for our campaign. Recently though with the changes to the keyword tool becoming the keyword planning tool we've seen an extreme fluctuation in the metrics provided for avg monthly searches. Specifically the keyword "best fries" used to be reported at 33100 avg global monthly searches, now with the new tool its at less than 200 overall for the month. Additional information has the google trends for the keyword to only be increasing and is roughly near peak search interest. So I guess to simplify the question, should I trust this metric? Is there an alternative source I can use for keyword research? Why would a drop like this happen? Why isn't the google trends data similar to that of the keyword data? Surely 100 representing peak interest doesn't translate to 200 searches a month.

Trying to avoid Keyword Cannibalization
I have a navigation menu at the top of my page with drop down menus that lead to different pages of my web site. Very typical navigation. If I have a page that is optimized for a particular keyword, lets say "Awesome Blue Widgets", do I want to remove that link from the navigation menu on the page awesome-blue-widgets.htm since the link uses the keyword phrase "Awesome Blue Widgets'?
