I am very very worried as my organic traffic suddenly came to pretty much a halt last Friday. We have been working very hard on content in the last 2 years and have 0 duplicated content with many thousand travel guides, tips and other travel related info. We are also publishing a successful travel blog which used to get quite a bit off traffic. Everything stalled last Friday and since we are operating in the travel industry which is very competitive, this will be very hard on us. In fact, I fear that we will not survive this drop for more than 2-3 months.
How do we find out about what happened and what can we do to get our SERPs back?
Thanks!

Thanks for the reply Peter. By reviewing your site I can share the following:
-
your site is still indexed by Google.
-
you could open a Reconsideration Request with Google to determine if your site has received a manual penalty: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/reconsideration
-
you need to analyze your traffic using Google Analytics. EXACTLY where is the traffic drop? You need to analyze specific sources such as Google organic search traffic for specific keywords.
-
I tried a longtail keyword search for your site based on the first blog article I located "top 5 reasons to visit honduras". You ranked #7 for the phrase. It's not surprising as the page has a PR of 1.
-
have you noticed any ranking drop for a specific keyword or page?
The only way to troubleshoot this issue is to dig into your analytics data.
-
-
Thank you so much for all the questions.
I am trying to keep it short, so here are the clarifications:
- we have not done anything specific in the past 6 weeks or 3 months that could have caused this
- no Malware is found via Webmastertools
- We use Analytics
- The drop is broad and sudden, we lost some 90% of our organic traffic
- The site is this one http://bit.ly/8CsakX
- No special inbound or oubtbound links were found that would have caused this
- the drop is broad across all pages and all keywords
Attached is an image... our SEO was ok... slowly increasing, interestingly our blog which fresh content that we write ourselves every day also got the hit and dropped 80% as well.
please help. Thanks

All the previous responses are great. I would look into Google Webmasters and check to see who's linking to you. Once you figure it out and 'if' you are being penalized, contact google through Google Webmasters and ask for a reconsideration.
-
The owner of the website is the person who is best able to diagnose a traffic decline. Anyone else is guessing.
The thing that you need to do is to check the analytics and determine.....
--- did you lose traffic for specific keywords?
--- did you lose traffic to specific pages?
--- did you lose traffic from specific sources?
Information like the above is the only way to diagnose a traffic loss.
Get into your analytics and see what happened. Then an action plan can be developed.

Hi Peter.
Itrogers asked some good questions. A few additional questions I would ask:
-
What tool are you using to measure your traffic?
-
What is your site's web address?
-
Which pages of your site normally receive the highest amount of traffic?
-
Is there any search term for which you had the #1 or 2 rankings in Google?
-
Are there any ad campaigns or other traffic sources which recently began? I realize you are asking about organic traffic but your ads may compete with the organic traffic.
-
What changes to your site have been made in the past 6 weeks? Any chance pages could have been blocked with robots.txt or noindexed?
Basically we need to understand exactly what traffic it was you previously received that is no longer present. Then we can begin to diagnose why that traffic is missing.
-
-
Have you purchased or obtained any spammy links to your content?
Have you checked Google webmaster tools for any malware warnings?
Did the traffic just stop completely? Make sure that you didn't remove your analytics code from your header. This will make it obviously look like you have 0 traffic when you actually might be. Sometimes technical changes (especially with a CMS) can cause some parts of the site to stop working together.
What did you do recently that might be of question to Google?

Can you confirm legitimate Google Bot traffic?
We use Cloudflare as a firewall. I noticed a significant number of blocks of bot traffic. One of the things they do is try to block bad bot traffic. But it seems they are mistakenly blocking Google Bot traffic. If you use Cloudflare, you may want to look into this as well. Also, can you confirm if the following IPs are for legitimate Google Bots? 66.249.79.88

Sudden site drop google, not banned or penalised?
Hi all, We've been working on our site weldingmart.com for a while. 4 weeks ago we got a sudden drop from google rankings even with our own brand name. No clear cause found, and decided to walk through all technicalities of the SEO fundament. thus we did the following
Technical SEO | | jkossel
-> Setup google webmasters tools
no issues found, a few 404's, few 410's sure thats all ok,
-> Setup robots.txt to only index homepages, lister pages, content and product detail pages (disabled all filters and search queries) Also we banned russian and spammy bots for performance-sake.
-> Added sitemaps, and around 14k pages seemed to be already indexed.
-> When searching for "site:weldingmart.com" i can find 14k pages.
-> we had a low 33/100 page speed score and improved this to 76/100 So we did a lot of clean up and improved a lot of items. but still 2-weeks in. we still have no ranking improvements. Before we went down we had around 100 clicks a day from google. now 5 avg. by the way i think a main issue is the low link count of course but still googling your own name should return us in top3 right. Is there something we are missing, do we need more time. I just want to verify that we do not mis anything!1 -
Need suggestions on what might be causing rankings drop from top5 to "not in 50"?

Dropped to 45th spot. How to track ?
Hi.. We specialize in CMS Development and all of our keywords were spotted on 1st page always. Most of them were on #1 only. ON a weekly basis, we only post resourceful blog posts on our website . Since 2-3 months, I have seen quite some drop in traffic and today when I tried the rank status, I see the keywords have dropped to 4th or 5th page. Is there a way, I can track, what went wrong ? Where to start with ? The site always ranked good since 2 years of its start already.

Does authority via traffic get passed on to a forwarded domain?
We have purchased a keyword rich domain name as well as a short domain name(the acronym of the company). I would like to only advertise the short version and have a 301 redirect to the longer version. If we get a lot of traffic to the short version is that credit/authority passed on to the domain we are forwarding to?

Mysterious drop of website ranking in google
Usually, I don't want to bother anybody by posting silly questions on forums. But this time I really might need advice. My wife and I took over the website maintenance and e-marketing of a local air conditioning company end of March this year. Before that the applied SEO strategies were not very user friendly and a little too search engine focused (spammy keyword stuffed articles, confusing website structure, a lot of directory links). Yesterday night (May 15th) the website more or less stopped ranking. For search terms like "ac repair englewood fl" or "trane north port" and many more the website was on page 1. Here are some more details: I replaced the old website with a newer version end of April. Since some of old the url structure did not apply any longer, I did a setup of around 30 301-redirects in .htaccess. The new site seemed to rank more or less as expected. The homepage has a PakeRank of 1 (seomoz Page Authority is 31). I am working on that but good natural links just take some time. site:kobiecomplete.com still brings up all the pages Google Webmaster Tools notified me on May 12th that there was a possible outage: _"_While crawling your site, we have noticed an increase in the number of transient soft 404 errors around 2012-05-08 16:00 UTC (London, Dublin, Edinburgh). Your site may have experienced outages. These issues may have been resolved. Here are some sample pages that resulted in soft 404 errors:" The listed pages under "some sample pages" are only pages from the old website which do not exist any longer and the 301 redirect was not setup. But this should have been already any issue before, if at all.

I added the missing 301 redirects and marked them as fixed in Google Webmaster Tools. I had a copy of the website on a testing webspace (root directory of brightsidewg.com). Even though I had robots.txt set to disallow everything and WordPress search engine privacy set to do not index / follow, the website appeared on the Google search results yesterday night instead of the original website (kobiecomplete.com). Even though brightsidewg was a few ranks worse than kobiecomplete.com was, it was still ranking.
To remove the duplicate content, I deleted everything on brightsidewg.com and requested the removal of the website in the Webmaster Tools. Now brightsidewg.com is not any longer indexed (good) but it didn't help the ranking of kobiecomplete.com. Especially the homepage and the service area pages were ranking pretty decent on Google before yesterday night. Now I can not find them at all. Only other less important pages rank on page 8+ No malware on website I did not do any big changes on the website yesterday (only really minor ones). I did not acquire any weird/paid links even though there is a new link from a PageRank 0 website which I did not setup: http://www.indo-karya.com/detail/news/2012/kombise But that alone I think would not be enough for a penalty. It almost looks like that Google applied a partial -950 filter!? I could submit the website for reconsideration to Google and tell them about the duplicate content issue with my testing webspace brightsidewg.com. What do you think about it and what shall I do? Thank you so much for any help!0 -
Panda and unnatural links caused ranking drop
Hi I have been approached to do some SEO work for a site that has been hit badly by the latest panda update 3.3, they have also had a warning in their Google webmaster tools account saying they had unnatural looking links to their site, they received this in 26 Feb and that prompted them to stop working with their excising seo company and look for a new one. Apparently their rankings for the keywords they were targeting have dropped dramatically, but it looks like just those they were actively building back links for, other phrases do not look affected. Before I take them on I want to be clear that it is possible to help them reclaim their rankings? I have checked the site and the on-page seo is good, the site build is good, just a few errors to fix but the links that have been built by the seo company are low quality with a lot of spun articles and the same anchor text so I see what the Google webmaster tools message is refuring to. I do not think these links can be removed as there is no contact details on the sites I checked I have not checked all of them but a random sample does not show promise, they are from low authority domains. So if I am to take them on as a client and help them to regain their previous rankings what is the best strategy? Obviously they want results yesterday and from our phone call they would rather someone else did the work than them, so my initial response of add some better quality content that others in your industry would link to as a reference did not go down well, to be fair I think it is a time issue there are only 3 people in the company and they are not technical at all. Thanks for your help Sean

My uniques have dropped around 25% since following advice here
Hi, since posting a few threads here and following instructions (post more unique content, link building etc) my website traffic has dropped by around 25% My SERPS rremain pretty much unchanged. I'm posting tons more unique content. Am I just being penalised slightly because I've made drastic changes to my site (301 .com -> .co.uk) etc or am I doing something wrong?
