Tool for extracting search queries
-
Hello,
Does anyone know of or have a tool that takes referrer URLs coming from Google which extracts the search query from the URL string?
Thank you

Thanks but as I mentioned above I am in Germany so cannott use analytics at all, hence my need to find another way to do this

Actually, with Google Analytics you can create a filter to see the search queries that users typed to land o a specific page of your website. It's very simple:
When you have the tracked website selected, on the left column in GA you will see "Custom Reports". Click on it, then click on "Create New Report". From the blue Metrix box select "Site Usage", scroll down to "Visits" and drag and drop it in the first empty "Metrix" box on the right. Now click on the green "Dimensions" Box, click on "Content", select "Page" and drag and drop it in the empty Dimension box. Click on "Traffic Sources", scroll down to "Country/Teritory" and drag this in a sub-dimension to also be able to see it by region.
Hope this helps, good luck!

Hey thanks, yeh was just wondering if anyone had a ready made tool as would make things a bit easier. The plan is to use the referral URLs from logfiles to look at search queries that are sending traffic to specific areas of the website (directories/sub-directories etc).
In Germany so cannot use Analytics and webmaster tools does not allow you to filter search queries to different areas of websites

Coding this yourself (or having it done by your developer) is a pretty simple job. It requires not much more than reading the 'q' parameter from the URL, which in PHP for example can be done by reading the $_GET['q'] variable.
For what purpose do you plan to use this parameter?

Maybe you could describe what you need that data for? Google Analytics normally records that data for natural search visits, but if you are looking to dynamically insert the keywords that requires some code work.

How do I access the old search console?
Hello, Moz community! I need to access the old search console in order to submit a change of address. I used to be able to switch from a toggle on the main menu, but I can't seem to find that anymore. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can access it?

Yet Another, Yet Important URL structure query.
Massive changes to our stock media site and structure here. While we have an extensive category system previously our category pages have only been our search pages with ID numbers for sorting categories. Now we have individual category pages. We have about 600 categories with about 4 max tiers. We have about 1,000,000 total products and issues with products appearing to be duplicate. Our current URL structure for producta looks like this: http://example.com/main-category/12345/product-name.htm Here is how I was planning on doing the new structure: Cat tier 1: http://example.com/category-one/ Cat tier 2: http://example.com/category-one/category-two/ Cat tier 3: http://example.com/category-one-category-two/category-three Cat tier 4: http://example.com/category-one-category-two-category-three/category-four/ Product: http://example.com/category-one-category-two-category-three/product-name-12345.htm Thoughts? Thanks! Craig

Google Search Results Flip-Flop
For a site we manage, Google can’t seem to decide which of two pages to present for a search for “skid steer attachments.” Almost weekly, it flip-flops from the home page to an interior page (which is a shopping cart category page that we have not actually optimized for the phrase.) The site is berlon.com. Have any of you had a similar experience and, if so, how did you address it? I’ve attached a Moz screen shot that shows the changes. mNfmJoY

Blog posts outranked for Title a String searches in content...why?
Site Pages: When I wrap a page title, or a string of several words in quotes, and GG search, my client's page shows up first. My understanding is that this shows general health of site, and acknowledgement as the original source of the content. Blog Posts: When I wrap a blog page, or post, title or string of words in quotes, and GG search, Feedblitz, Facebook, and other scraper sites appear before the blog home page, and also the actual blog post. The blog is in a separate directory. Does this suggest that the /blog/ is being penalized or demoted in any way? Does it indicate the /blog/ directory does not have authority? Both the static site pages, and the blog pages, are using rel=canonical tags. What causes this, what does it indicate, and how can I fix it? Thanks,

Issue with 'Crawl Errors' in Webmaster Tools
Have an issue with a large number of 'Not Found' webpages being listed in Webmaster Tools. In the 'Detected' column, the dates are recent (May 1st - 15th). However, looking clicking into the 'Linked From' column, all of the link sources are old, many from 2009-10. Furthermore, I have checked a large number of the source pages to double check that the links don't still exist, and they don't as I expected. Firstly, I am concerned that Google thinks there is a vast number of broken links on this site when in fact there is not. Secondly, why if the errors do not actually exist (and never actually have) do they remain listed in Webmaster Tools, which claims they were found again this month?! Thirdly, what's the best and quickest way of getting rid of these errors? Google advises that using the 'URL Removal Tool' will only remove the pages from the Google index, NOT from the crawl errors. The info is that if they keep getting 404 returns, it will automatically get removed. Well I don't know how many times they need to get that 404 in order to get rid of a URL and link that haven't existed for 18-24 months?!! Thanks.
