Sharethis vs addthis
-
We currently use Sharethis, but I've noticed many sites using Addthis for sharing. Is there any preference or reason to use one more than the other?
-
Our recent experience with the AddThis buttons/script - is that it slowed our page load time down tremendously, so we removed it. Did not try loading it asynchronously, which may have helped.

Thank you!

The nofollow attribute generally would only be applied to an external link if the target was either unknown or not trusted. I would not nofollow any social sharing links.
With respect to adding additional outbound links, as a best practice you always want to minimize links on a page. Social sharing links offer a tremendous amount of value and are welcome on any page of mine.

Ryan, is there no downside for having AddThis button with 4 -5 outbound links especially if they are placed high up on the page? Did you apply the no-follow attribute?

I was also looking for a social sharing solution earlier this year. I researched AddThis and ShareThis, and decided to go with AddThis. I've been very pleased with that decision.
AddThis has fantastic customer service. Each time I posted a question in their forums, a solid answer was provided within hours. AddThis also offers URL tracking, access to 300+ social sharing networks along with fast, responsive updates. When Google+1 was introduced I went to their site and they already had it set up and ready to work with their system.
I probably sound like a salesman. I am merely a satisfied customer who is very pleased with their service.

The most common services we see through addthis are actually facebook and email.
zharriet has a good point. You could really do the same thing with a few icons and skip the javascript.
-
We are a small business that tried both and use neither because the code was javascript and slowing down our page loading speed.
The solution for us (and taking a look at how SEOmoz did it) was to use icon images with hyperlinks to our FB page and Twitter--pure and simple.
We use Facebook and Twitter. SEOmoz has those plus Feedburner and LinkedIn.
I am guessing that people who regularly Digg, Technorati, and so on, probably have an app pinned to their browser for quickly sharing.
Except for the speed issue, I liked Addthis better because more websites I look up to used it.

Benefits and cons of hosting video content vs hosting via youtube
Hi if a site is hosting its own videos (not embedding them on youtube) is there less benefits then getting youtube to host it, and then embedding the youtube video. For instance: For benefits such as building channel authority, easy to rank the video in the search engines hosted on youtube, better opportunity to increase visitors and traffic and higher chance for the video to spread and rank for the keyword when hosted on youtube. What do you guys think?

Places for business vs. Google+ personal profile
I am still trying to figure out Places and Google+. Could someone please help me understand how my Google+ profile (that it attached to and can be accessed through my gmail account) interacts with my Places page (which requires my gmail credentials to administer, but can only be accessed through the Places page itself)? Do my posts on my personal profile enhance my Places listing? Any help would be appreciated.

I just discovered something about Addthis shares, Twitter, and rel-canonical.
Let's say I have a page on my site with the url www.mydomain.com/page1.php?id=234. Let's say it can be accessed by the url www.mydomain.com/page-this-is-a-keyword-rich-url And let's say that the second example is what I have set as my rel-canonical. I wondered what would happen when people submitted the non-canonical url to twitter. We know that Twitter shares count for something in SEO. I didn't want things to go to waste if people were landing on my short urls and sharing them on Twitter. Well, tonight, I shared one of my own urls on Twitter. I was accidentally on the short one (not the canonical), but when I shared it via addthis the long one was shared. So, Addthis must read the canonical and use this to share. Very cool. At least to me. I may possibly be the only person on the planet that understands what I just wrote, but this is a neat discovery for me.

Widgets like Facebook Like and AddThis - Any Negative SEO?
I could go widget crazy with my website, there are so many cool buttons and linking this and likes and etc. There's one that is used a lot, called "Addthis" that adds a series of small icons to share a page via facebook, twitter, etc. The javascript looks innocent enough, but there's a link, and who knows what google makes of it. Then there are the dozen or so Facebook widgets - are they safe to use without negative SEO consequences? Does anyone know of any other pitfalls with using the numerous addons offered free to enhance your site? Thanks for any wisdom out there! Jean
