Does CSS position effect the value of a link?
-
For example, take a look at http://www.dueds.com and scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. See the link in the bottom left? Does the fact that it is pushed all the way down to the bottom make the link worth less than if it was directly under the social media buttons?

Links in footer is probably the worst place to put them. Links in sidebar are also of less value. Links are best in the content of a page.
There is a body of evidence that for links based in the content portion of a page, the higher the link the more value it has. Such that, if the content is 3 paragraphs, P1 is better than P2 and P2 is better than P3.
I know there is a good evaluation on this I read about 5 - 6 months ago and if I can find in under 5 minutes, I will edit in the url.

Here's a piece of authentic information if you like videos and Matt Cutts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0fgh5RIHdE. Just as miss M. -J said, links in footer do carry less value.
-
What I do believe I know about link position is that the first link on a page has more value than the second, etc. The principle upon which Google's "link popularity / PageRank" algo was based on the 'random surfer model. So a link that is more likely to be clicked is more valuable. This is not to say that Google's PR algo has not evolved, but I am sure this principle is still in significant play.
I think most professional SEOs would also agree that footer links have less value than other links - though I am less certain of that than my first point.
I think Matt Cutts would say, try to think like the user. Is your visitor less likely to find and click on the link than if it were near the social media buttons? If so, it is likely to get less traffic.
Not all links can be the first link, but I would be sure to have any important link be "above the fold" and barring that, with a feature that would be likely to attract the eye of the user.
Hope that helps.

Disavow links old links
We have built a lot of sites and there a few sites we no longer manage or want any association with. When I have looked at webmasters I can see 20 to 200+ odd links back to our site. The page however at source has no reference to our website. I have searched the code but there isn't anything. Is it safe to disavow these or just leave them?

The site is: https://www.cnc-ltd.co.uk Any help of hints would be great thanks in advance Steve

How to get rid of back links?
I would like to clear all of the links linking to us to start over fresh? Our site has become non existent on Google with no messages or warning from them through webmaster tools. From tools on here and other sources it indicates that we should be ranked ahead of our competitors or atleast comparable. We are not found under the keywords that we use to be...."parts washers" "part washer" industrial cleaning systems etc.. our site is www.vortexpartswashers.com. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Link Volume - calculate what you need?
Hi everyone, an interesting question here. How do you determien what link volume you should try and get into your website? What analysis do you do to determine the number of links you feel is right to go into a back-link profiel every month? obviously there is no magic number but its an interesting question to know what others do. Obviously you don't want to build too many or too little. If you have been penalised for bad links in the past and are now back on track - how do you calculate the volume? Do you take links dropping out into consideration?

Links from Youtube Channel
I stumbled across this blog post: http://garyreid.com/youtube-removes-nofollow/ and also this one : http://www.kevin-barnes.com/youtube-secret-authority-loophole/ which talks about no-follow links from your Youtube Channel Page. We've setup a Youtube channel, and have begun updating it regularly, however the link appears to be a redirect-type link -presumably this means no link juice is passed? The code of the link on our Youtube channel: http://www.pretavoir.co.uk The second blog mentions building PA on your Youtube channel by commenting on other videos which then links back to your channel page - if that juice can't go to your site, then I assume the technique is of limited use? Apart from boosting your Youtube Channel's rankings of course, which I guess can't hurt.
