Title Tag To Long
-
In the initial review of my site, I have 38 warnings of title tags to long. It also says these warnings are often penalized by search engines. In Google webmaster tools, It says I have no problems with long title tags. So am I getting penalized and do I need to shorten them? I would already have shortened them but in the past, everytime I have changed my title tag I have been penalized by the search engines. I usually get my rankings back but it can take up to a month and a half to get back to where I was.

I've just cleaned up about 250 titles for a client site. They were WAY too long but sometimes it might just be one character--so with some creative focus you can tighten things up and still get your term or phrases in.
When it comes to software tools, they can only do so much and so you have to take that into consideration. I tend to err on the site of caution and still with the parameters. My goal is between 60-65 characters in titles.
If you are using a CMS (content management system) that also lists the blog name in the title by default, this could put you over as well--so take that into consideration.

unless your title tags are stuffed with dozens of keywords. I wouldn't be so concerned about the length. The reason you might want to limit the length of your title tags has to do with a combination of factors.
First, the longer the title tag. The more challenging it is for search engines to determine an individual page's topical focus. When comparing the contents of the title tag to other factors. Next, search engines only display the first 65 to 70 characters from your title and even then, only when they are evaluation process determines that your chosen title tag truly does represent the topical focus of that page.
So based on those concepts, best practices SEOwould dictate cleaning up all page titles accordingly.

Title Tag, Internal Categories, Long tail
Hello, For internal categories - those that are not in the main navigation - we're optimizing for the long tail. How do you optimize the title tag for the long tail? For example if the internal category is about Men's shoes -> "Adidas Crosstrainers" and you already have a page in the main navigation with "Adidas Crosstrainers" in the title, what kind of title do you use for the long tail category? These categories are usually for the convenience of the user. I assume they should each have at least 500 words in them to do the best long tail searches. Thanks.

Does my actual blog post title have any effect once I create a title tag for SEO purposes?
A little confused about this. Reason I ask is that using my actual title for my title tag sometimes isn't the best for getting ranked, so the title and title tag are sometimes not the same.

Title and Heading Tags
Firstly I would like to comment on how helpful this site is. I haven't posted much before but have been reading tonnes of answers for many months now and have been finding it really useful. I used the SEOmoz scanner and the main problem highlighted was duplicate content so I started to add 'customer product reviews' I had received and unique 'further information' to each page (hopefully this was the right thing to do to solve duplicate content! : ) ) Then I looked at heading and title tags. Currently I set title tags for each product page to be "Brand Name- Product Name" but after doing some research we are thinking of putting Keyword Description of Product | Product Name | Brand Name (around 60 characters long). So is this the advised thing to do and create unique titles that are relevant to each specific product page for over 200 pages we have? In addition, any advice on setting optimum tags would be great. We keep reading varying tips online. I gather ideally h1 needs to be a shorter keyword rich version of the title tag? Many Thanks

Title tags missing
I have noticed that some of my title tags have been altered (by Google?) on the SERP. I am only showing the keywords on some listings, not the full title tags that I wrote, this is happening to our competitors as well. Any idea what is going on, one of my clients is looking for answers! Thanks
