Minimum text per product page
-
I have an ecommerce site with thousands of product pages. I am using the product details provided by the manufacturer (as with most other sites selling the same products).
I have 3 questions:
-
If I want to set my pages apart with product descriptions, what it s the minimum amount of text I can add to make them unique?
-
The content will be from an offshore company, so it will likely not be of the best quality. Can Google determine the quality of text and evaluate it differently?
-
I have also added product reviews to the site. Are there any other methods to make the product pages more unique or SEO friendly?

I tried job boards for other jobs (other than writing) an didn't have much luck. I should try again!
Thanks for the advice.

Just a thought on your content writers. Are there any universities by you?
We have had great success reaching out to local university job boards and even craigslist looking to hire student writers. The quality is great and we can get quality writing (for general content like product descriptions) for as little as $0.03/word. The best part is they are local, american born english speaking, and eager for more work!

Thanks for the response. I am going for around 150 words per description.
The content writers are checking the submitted text against copyscape. That should be enough to confirm uniqueness, right?
I would love to have longer better written copy, but with thousands of products, I just can't afford that.

1) If I want to set my pages apart with product descriptions, what it s the minimum amount of text I can add to make them unique?
It is great that you are going after unique content. The more text you can provide for a product the better. Sometimes that text can be easily obtained by writing about the product specifications.
As far as a minimum... I would like to have at least fifty words... but I have taken fifty word descriptions and changed them to 500 word descriptions and the result was... 1) rankings increase... 2) lots more traffic from long-tail keywords.
So, writing the extra words might be a great investment.
2) The content will be from an offshore company, so it will likely not be of the best quality. Can Google determine the quality of text and evaluate it differently?
I work on the assumption that Google can spot misspellings and bad grammar; also that google can determine reading level.
If you are getting offshore writing there is a good chance that you will get content copied from another website or content that is spun from another website. Be careful.
3) I have also added product reviews to the site. Are there any other methods to make the product pages more unique or SEO friendly?
Hard work! As mentioned above, get the product manual and there might be lots of easy writing that can be produced after becoming familiar. Also adding dimensions, weights, speeds, etc. can put lots of words on your pages that will pull traffic.

One more thing... you use the words "SEO friendly".... those make me smile because "SEO friendly" and "SEO effective" are two very different things. You want SEO effective.

Using Product Page Content from an Offline Website
Hi all, We have two websites. One of the website's no longer sells product range A. However, on the second website, we would like to sell range A. We paid a copywriter to write some really good content for these ranges and we were wondering if we would get stung for duplicate content if we took these descriptions from website 1 and placed them on website 2. The products / descriptions are live anymore and haven't been for about 6 weeks. We're ranking for some great keywords at the moment and we don't want to spoil that. Thanks in advance! D

Anchor Text and over optimization
Hello everyone, I would like to have your expert (hopefully) opinion on one thing: I am working on a specifi page of a pretty big site, and I noticed one thing in particular. This page is linked to from a lots of internal pages (which is ok) but the anchor text used is in most cases the exact keyword they would like to rank for. I know this is not generally a good thing, but I guess they have so many links with that particular anchor because of the breadcrumbs, and this actually makes sense. Now, if this is the case, how could we work this out (if this is an issue)? Or probably this is not an issue since those links don’t carry a lot of SEO weight…don’t know. Thanks for your opinion on this 🙂

Joomla creating duplicate pages, then the duplicate page's canonical points to itself - help!
Using Joomla, every time I create an article a subsequent duplicate page is create, such as: /latest-news/218-image-stabilization-task-used-to-develop-robot-brain-interface and /component/content/article?id=218:image-stabilization-task-used-to-develop-robot-brain-interface The latter being the duplicate. This wouldn't be too much of a problem, but the canonical tag on the duplicate is pointing to itself.. creating mayhem in Moz and Webmaster tools. We have hundreds of duplicates across our website and I'm very concerned with the impact this is having on our SEO! I've tried plugins such as sh404SEF and Styleware extensions, however to no avail. Can anyone help or know of any plugins to fix the canonicals?

Crawl Test Report only shows home page and no inner site pages?
Hi, My site is [removed] When I first tried to set up a new campaign for the site, I received the error: Roger has detected a problem: We have detected that the root domain [removed] does not respond to web requests. Using this domain, we will be unable to crawl your site or present accurate SERP information. I then ran a Crawl Test per the FAQ. The SEOmoz crawl report only shows my home page URL and does not have any inner site pages. This is a Joomla site. What is the problem? Thanks! Dave

Has Google stopped rendering author snippets on SERP pages if the author's G+ page is not actively updated?
Working with a site that has multiple authors and author microformat enabled. The image is rendering for some authors on SERP page and not for others. Difference seems to be having an updated G+ page and not having a constantly updating G+ page. any thoughts?

Text hidden by button?
The issue: text on a page available only by pushing a button or clicking Read More and the text slides up via AJAX. Will Google penalize a site doing that via hand edit? I think that according to Matt Cutts, as long as the text is available to the user then it's ok. I want to double check on this.

I am trying to correct duplicate content. However SEOmoz only reports and shows the page of duplicate content. I have 5 years worth of blogs and cannot find the duplicate page. Is my only option to just delete the page to improve my rankings. Brooke
