Setting up a Company Blog - Subdomain or new URL?
-
I've just got hold of a client without a blog (a blog is very marketable for their industry especially!). But run into the dilemma -
Is it better to set up a new domain ("clientblog.com") with separate hosting or create a subdomain ("blog.clienturl.com")?
Has anyone ever done a study on this and which is most beneficial? Most importantly has anyone had success with either?
Thanks!
-
Makes me feel better I wasn't the only one!
Glad it helped clear things up for you too
-
You're so welcome! It's pretty simple to do as well so come back if your web designer wants to charge you an arm and a leg
-
That is indeed very interesting, we've been looking at whether to for a sub directory or sub domain and this pretty much answers the question, a sub directory it is.
-
That's actually very useful, hadn't given a folder much thought so that helps a lot!
Thanks!!
-
I hadn't actually considered that, so thank you!
-
Is there a reason you aren't considering a sub folder? Check out this resource from Moz - http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/domain
"5. Subdomains or Sub-folders
Since search engines keep different metrics for domains than they do subdomains, it is recommended that webmasters place link worthy content like blogs in subfolders rather than subdomains. (i.e. www.example.com/blog/ rather than blog.example.com) The notable exception to this is language specific websites. (i.e. en.example.com for english)"
It should be pretty easy to add a sub-folder like www.clientrul.com/blog for a WP blog for easy SEO
I hope that helps!

You can have success with either option, but the general consensus here on SEOMOZ I believe is subfolder

Time to Separate Company Websites or Keep it on One Domain?
Hey Everyone! I am completely stumped with what I should do for the scenario I find myself in… I’m hoping with your experience, you could guide me into the right direction. Let’s say our current website is Brown.com (Brown Group Inc.). We have a splash page, which links to two subfolders Brown Minerals (Brown.com/Minerals) and Brown Pet Products (Brown.com/Pet). Both of these are separate companies but owned by Brown Group Inc. Each company specializes in different industries, sell different products, have different customers and have different marketing. The only common thing the two companies have is the brand name “Brown” and owned by the same person. Brown Group Inc.

(Brown.com) Brown Minerals
(Brown.com/Minerals) Brown Pet Products
(Brown.com/Pet) I work specifically for Brown Minerals. It is my job to develop a new website, build traffic to our website, improve our SEO rankings and to build the Brown Minerals online brand. I am afraid that the work I will be putting into building our online brand may not be as effective since we share the same domain name with Brown Pet Products, which their website is outdated, they have their own traffic, links, etc. specifically for their products & industry. My question is, should we keep both websites in subfolders on the existing domain name or should we separate the websites and put them on their own domain names (BrownMinerals.com and BrownPetProducts.com)? Thank you0 -
How to start or create a blogging community for my industry?
Hi Guys, I have just established my new site, and I'm wondering if anyone might know how to go about establishing a blogging community for my industry on my site? I'm trying to establish one by asking other bloggers if they would be willing to contribute but Im left asking myself, well "what is the benefits" of a contributor participating in a newly established blog that perhaps doesn't have any exposure at this point in time? The idea would be to grow it. But my industry lacks this and the quality of information. Any ideas or tips on how to go about establishing something around this? All advice, tips would be appreciated! Thanks

I have a new domain, how should i best use it?
Hi all, Recently signed upto Moz and loving what i am seeing at the moment.I do alot of microsites and push both adwords and affiliate programmes and products and earn enough to give me some fun money. For a long time i have wanted to get into the mobile phone market as i have spoken to alot of people who get anything upto £100 a time from affiliate programmes. I have just purchased a new domain after doing some digging around and though that before i dive into doing things how i normally would , i thought id ask advice on how to best utilise the domain i have bought. Ive just purchased newiphone.co.uk and will put up a holding page once all of the registration has gone through and i have access to everything. According to Google keyword planner the term 'new iphone' gets around 368k searches a month. Moz says this is an extremely difficult keyword to rank for with a 80% difficulty rating so i appreciate i wont be at number 1 in a couple of weeks. Id appreciate your ideas and suggestions as a community to see how i go forward. Many tanks in advancePaul

Impact SEO when sharing with other PC urls a mobile website url
Struggle with the following impact on SEO if starting to share mobile website URL. We have multiple PC urls (5 different domains). For example www.site1.com, www.site2.com, www.site3.com, www.site4.com and www.site5.com. Now I have to convince other people within the company not to use one mobile website url for all different domains. The intention is to direct all mobile traffic from site1, site2, site3, site4 and site5 to the url: m.site4.com. Based on the following articles I already wanted to combine the www.site4.com with the m.site4.com to one entity, based on the third method which is supported by Google. https://developers.google.com/webmasters/smartphone-sites/details and http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com.au/2013/06/changes-in-rankings-of-smartphone_11.html But now I have to give SEO impact feedback on the other domains. The obvious one is site1, site2, site3 and site5 will not have positive mobile SERP indexation. Second impact: Duplicated content issues across multiple websites.
Industry News | | Letty
Third impact:users from site1, site2, site3 and site5 will see the change in URL, could give a negative user experience.
Fourth impact: text on site1 / site2 / site3 / site5 is not the same as on site 4 this will implement maybe hidden content issues, which could cause penalties. Do I miss other negative SEO impact, I have been searching a lot of the articles / blogs, Q&A but can't really find sufficient information about this particular subject. Any feedback or links to articles / blogs / Q&A are highly appreciated.0 -
Recommend a Freelancer or Company
Hi, Can anyone recommend a freelance SEO consultant or company in the UK, who have proven results and don't cost a fortune? We deal with very small businesses, who want to get some traction on the search engines, but can't afford much per month. Or are the days of $250 a month contracts gone, because of the work involved now? Any help appreciated.
