Hi Mozzers,
I have a serious topic to discuss and want help from the experts here.
Our website has 6 PR and we have been consistency staying at the top for very competitive terms in the niche.
Since last Friday (24th February, 2012) we have been facing massive fluctuation in the rankings for most of the keywords we are focusing on. After this fall, we checked the following details but didn’t find any serious/critical issue that might be contributing towards these fluctuations:-
- We analyzed Google webmaster tools, there’s no update/warning from Google regarding any negative activity and other things seem to be normal.
- We checked our website through site search (site: www.domain.com) and found that we haven’t lost any indexed pages and things appear normally as they used to. So, we are sure that we haven’t been banned or penalized.
- We also cross verified our link building and other promotional activities and we didn’t find anything suspicious that could lead to such a big fluctuation.
The drop is really big, some keywords went to 5th or 6th page from top 3 position; some keywords are not in top 200 or 300 spots which were usually staying put between 5th to 10th position. We have analyzed a lot but haven’t come to know the reason why we are facing this fluctuation.
Our website is 4 years old and this kind of fluctuation has happened for the first time.
Has anyone faced this kind of issue before?
I’m looking forward to your support in identifying this trouble.
Thanks

Unless you're mega-popular (like Amazon, Wal-Mart, etc), I would expect things like this from time to time.
I tend to find that precipitous drops are due to a shift in algorithms. You might be going "well duh", but it's important to note that an algorithm change can cause shifts like this on a temporary basis while either the indexation process catches up or Google evaluates a set of changes (internally or by using quality evaluators). My bet is it's the latter since Google announced they rolled out a lot of new changes (which is not something Google does on a regular basis). That, to me, screams "testing" (remember that Panda did the same thing to a lot of sites about 1 year ago). Eventually the SERPs return to "normal".
That having been said, are you sitting still? If so, that's not going to help you in the long run. Add links and content. Keep up with your competitors. Remember, they want to sell your products as much as you do.

Hi Mark,
A couple of suggestion to check:
- Long load times of pages during Google’s last crawl.
- Pages with poor content on bring the whole site down – caused by recent Google updates
Hope these help.

Lost ranking after domain switch
I recently migrated from https://whitefusemedia.com to https://whitefuse.com. The website URL structure and content remained the same and I followed all the best practice guidance regarding checks on the new domain and appropriate 301 redirects. I have seen traffic drop by about 50% and the traffic that is still coming through is mainly coming through links still listed by Google under the old domain (https://whitefusemedia.com). Is this normal? Should I expect to see this bounce back, or is there anything I can do now to regain the rankings?

How long to recover from Panda Update
Hi there, I think I was affected by the recent Panda update as I had a lot of duplicate content for my product descriptions (about 300). I'm going through and rewriting these to be both helpful and unique. I was ranking quite nicely for a big spread of keywords, but have been seeing my rankings drop day after day since the update. Is it possible to see my rankings improve again after Google re-crawls my site, or would a penalty have been applied to my site preventing me to re-gain my positions for sometime. It's probably worth noting that I have a lot of unique and helpful content, it was just my product pages that had duplicate content, but I've seen my rankings across the board drop. Any discussion and insight would be much appreciated.

Dropped to 45th spot. How to track ?
Hi.. We specialize in CMS Development and all of our keywords were spotted on 1st page always. Most of them were on #1 only. ON a weekly basis, we only post resourceful blog posts on our website . Since 2-3 months, I have seen quite some drop in traffic and today when I tried the rank status, I see the keywords have dropped to 4th or 5th page. Is there a way, I can track, what went wrong ? Where to start with ? The site always ranked good since 2 years of its start already.

Sudden Drop in Keyword Rankings
We launched http://www.manufacturedfun.com/ earlier this year and had been ranking 1 & 2 on Google SERPs for the keywords we optimized, but last week we experienced a sudden drop in rankings that pretty much took us off the radar. For instance, 'popcorn machines' went as far back as page 5 and 'popcorn poppers' dropped even further to page 9. We are currently working on fixing the numerous Duplicate Page Title and Duplicate Page Content errors identified by SEOmoz, but since we have had those for about 6 months and ranked well anyway, I wonder if there's something else that we are missing. Any insight you can offer will be sincerely appreciated. Thank you!

Will a drop in indexed pages significantly affect Google rankings?
I am doing some research into why we were bumped from Google's first page into the 3rd, fourth and fifth pages in June of 2010. I always suspected Caffeine, but I just came across some data that indicates a drop in indexed pages from 510 in January of that year to 133 by June. I'm not sure what happened but I believe our blog pages were de-indexed somehow. What I want to know is could that significant drop in indexed pages have had an effect on our rankings at that time? We are back up to over 500 indexed pages, but have not fully recovered our first page positions.
