Picking a Keyword to optimize for home page
-
Hi there,
I have chosen a keyword for a bunch of my top pages based on relevance, traffic, competition etc, and am tracking in the Tool - so far so good.
The issue I am having is with picking a keyword or phrase for the home page - all the suitable keywords I seem to have been allocated to 1 particular sub pages - basically product pages...
Anyone come across this issue? Basically any keyword or phrase that I think might be suitable for the home page, I find a more precise page beneath the home page....
Help gratefully accepted!

If you have pages optimised for each of your products that you are happy with then I would consider whether there is a term that might be used to describe the group of products that people might use when searching less specifically. Is there a term that a competitor site uses?
Many searchers start quite generic and get more specific when there initial search doesn't throw up any suitable results.
As you have done for the product pages see which collective phrase has the best search volume/lowest competition.

I had this issue with my main site. Pest control was our big target phrase. Yet we had optimized an internal page for pest control as well, /pest-control.php They were somewhat competing for the same term. So how do I proceed? Well the search engine made that decision easy.
Our main page was ranking for "pest control" so I let that one carry the load for our pest control efforts. This meant internal links were directed back to the home page for that keyword and external links also took this into consideration.
The solution I used for the internal, /pest-control.php, page was to alter this page to "pest control service". So I didn't loose out on any previous efforts for that page. Just modified it a bit. Hope that helps.
In my opinion, your homepage will almost always be your strongest page, so put your core term there.

More Singular KW Targeted Landing Pages vs. Less Multiple KW Targeted Landing Pages
So my question is... I have a adopted a site which currently ranks quite well for some industry competitive keywords with a number of poor quality landing pages which specifically target a singular keyword. I am wondering if its worth merging some of these pages together into one authoritative, better quality landing page targeting multiple keywords (as the intent for some of these keywords are largely the same). What i don't want to do is jeopardise the existing rankings in doing so. The alternative option would just be to improve the content on the existing landing pages without merging. What are peoples thoughts on this? Are there any positive case studies out there where merging has had a positive effect? Any help would be great. Regards,

Homepage target keyword less volume than subcategory keyword
As an example - let's say that I have an online store that sells home accessories. Within my store, I have categories like "kitchen accessories", "bedroom accessories", and "bathroom accessories" among others. Naturally I would want my homepage to be the broadest keyword that best describes my store's offering (i.e. "Home Accessories"). Then, on my sub-category page, I would target "Kitchen Accessories". In this example - let's assume "Kitchen Accessories" has more search volume than "Home Accessories". Would it be better to focus on that keyword on my homepage instead? Example Current Homepage Title: "Beautiful Home Accessories - Crate + Feather" Alternate Homepage Title: "Bath, Bedroom, and Kitchen Accessories - Crate + Feather" Which one would you do assuming everything is equal aside from search volume?

Keyword canibalization
Hi, I'm ranking for 'bodybuilding schema' with two separate pages (see attachment). Is this a problem? I heard that's it's better to only have one page ranking per keyword. If so, how do I prevent this? Thanks! Jasper MhcOI

Over Optimization?
Yet another basic question....is it bad to try and optimize a page for numerous keywords that are all related? My site is an eCommerce site. So for and example: I am trying to optimize my homepage (www.shopconfections.com) for about 20 keywords that all directly describe my site. On product pages I am optimizing for about 15 keywords that all directly relate to my product. Many of my keywords are long tailed. Can there be too many? What are the consequences of that? Thanks!
