Is using photos of people to market your ecommce a good idea? Do you think people relate more?
-
So I noticed all the leading competitors in our market are using photos of people on their home pages to market products.. While we are using a simple but eye catching design with no photos of people but only produts.

This blog does a nice job showing the effect of having people with different emotions, and pointing and looking towards and away from the product. I know it isn't quite what you asked, but if you do add people, this could give you a little extra. Eye Tracking Studies

I think it has a lot to do w/ your industry and product. Personally, we have shied away from images of people because our community of shoppers are diverse, and we feel that showing certain images of people, rather than the product itself, would limit the image of our brand. But again, this depends on your industry and product.
I agree that testing w/ Google analytics is a good idea to view bounce rates if you decide to try it out.

As Irving said, you will need to test and see if how your audience/demographic responds. I will say as a general practice people in the picture does a lot better than just product pictures. I have tested this on a few websites and always had a good uplift in both conversion and CTR from the main call to action with good pictures of people. You just have to make sure you choose the right type of "people" for your picture.

Set up Google website optimizer (it's free) and do some A/B testing on your homepage to see which images get better click thru and lower the bounce rate. You'll be surprised how much of a variation you may see in terms of conversion rate.
All sites look different so there are too many factors that come into play to be able to just say "yes images of people will convert better" so test and let the user pick the winner.

What's a good way to get started with competitive research?
Hi all, SEO noob here. I'm doing an audit for a firm that makes specialized accounting software. It's a relatively new firm, with a barebones website. My client has identified three direct business competitors. In addition, I see indirect competitors (such as product reviews) on the SERP for a relevant keyword phrase. I want to provide actionable advice for my client. What information should I present? I'd like to help my client understand: Why my client's competitors are outperforming them on the SERPs What my client needs to do to overtake their competitors What information should I present to my client? Thanks, all.

Best type of backlinks... Right? What do you think?
I was just thinking... wouldn't the best types of backlinks for any small local business be from "their own competitors" ? Weird, I know... but it would NOT get any more relevant than that. I mean wouldn't an Italian restaurant in New York gain credibility and higher ranks on SE's if "other" 'Italian restaurants in New York' linked back to them? Problem... yeap! It would be really hard to convince your "competition" to link back to ya! no matter how good your content piece is! Thoughts?

Market Samurai
I'm a complete newbie at this so please bear with me, I'm using the free trial version of Market Samurai and I was just researching some keywords and the figures were off from google adword and MS. Is this due Google banning MS about a year ago? Because from what I've read appantely they get their SEOC figures from Bing? Which would defeat me logging in with my adwords account in the MS program right? I'd appreciate the help guys. Thank you in advance.

Are aboutus.org links good?
Greetings Mozzers, I've posted several clients on aboutus.org sometime ago and it doesn't look like it is showing up on OSE. Its been well over 5 weeks. I have looked on their profile and none of the links are rel="nofollow" is there another thing I can check that would take all the juice away from them? Or does someone know if this is a good place to use? Thanks for any advice and clarification!
