Community site for link building?
-
I'm considering the following in order to get users to stay on my site and make it more useful to visitors. At the minute we list live bands for hire and have a blog - that's it. I'm looking to build a sense of community where users can build a profile, chat, list their gigs, upload demos and chat in forums.
Firstly I want improve the user experience and gain dedicated members but my second reason for doing so it to gain backlinks. My theory is that if the site is more useful it will gain more links. Does anyone have any info on how implementing 'community' features on a website helps with backlinks and whether this strategy works?
These changes would mean my site has evolved considerably but i don't see that as a problem. My long term aim is to monetise the site through classifed ads and spot ads. Would anyone advise against adding advertising to a site and if so why?

It really depends on how you approach the advertising on the forum/community. If you do it in a positive way - by having helpful/relevant/subtle/non-intrusive ads, it could be a great strategy in the long run.
If you simply throw in some keywordy text links, the user experience is degraded and you also risk being 'reported' by competitors (who would be looking at your 'new' links; if niche is competitive).
It could be an affective strategy as long as you are very careful on how you carry this out - right from the initial strategy (where you host) to ads and link implementation (how you monetize)

LinkedIn switching links in messages to httpS?
One of my clients has been using the "Send a message" function in LinkedIn to reach out to folks with whom he's connected, and it seems that recently (though it could have always been this way), LinkedIn is changing the URL from http:// to https:// when he provides a link to his website. His site isn't secure, since it's not ecommerce and doesn't collect PII, and though I know that Google "likes" sites that are https, it doesn't seem like it's worth the investment. I did test this, and found the same "switcheroo" happening to me. Anyone know if this is a new LinkedIn thing, and if there's a workaround? Thanks for reading!

My site has dropped, I'm a little lost - help
Hi guys, my site www.platesbypost.co.uk ranked #1 for replacement number plates for years about 6 months ago it dropped to 3rd then 5th now 8th. As a result the traffic has dropped off a cliff. Some of the sites above me don't look stronger on moz's metrics. About two weeks ago I had an unnatural external links notice in webmaster tools, I no followed all external links in the blog and sent a reconsideration request the day I had the notice and it was revoked within a week. The rankings didn't seem to be effected by the manual action notice. I would welcome any help you can give me.

Competitor has 50 linking root domains, 2500 facebook likes
Hello, A competitor of ours is ranking way higher than you would expect. They have very few links, half the DA and homepage PA of us, yet they rank several slots higher. On analysis, the only difference seems to be that they have 2500 facebook likes. Did they buy likes? Have you seen anything odd like this before? Thanks.

Social data for links
Hey can anyone recommend a tools out there, which can look at a list of urls (over 20+) and it will show the social stats for each url (e.g. number of Facebook Shares, Tweets, etc)? Or a tool which searchers within a certain category or niche (might be based on the keyword you entered), and finds the most shared content? Cheers, Chris

Adult dating site. How can I get people to share content on facebook or google plus..
I am working on http://www.top-10-dating-reviews.com an adult dating review website. I want to build a presence on social networks so have set up twitter, google plus, and a facebook page. As I understand it retweets, like, shares etc... Play a significant part in seo. Therefore I want to get as many shares etc as possible. My initial idea was to create a fan page on facebook and pay to promote it on facebook gaining likes on the fan page. Will likes on the fan page impact the main site? I would imagine not? However I can see how someone visiting the main site and liking a post would have a positive effect on rankings. The problem I've come into is facebook won't run the ads as the page is adult so they won't accept paid ads. If I add a post to the facebook page how can I get it in front of people to share or like it? Equally how can I get google plus shares? I'm new to social and am unsure of how I should proceed? Especially as facebook considers the page adult. Finally how important is social. I've read it can get short term wins and optimised posts can appear at the top of search results but don't stay there long. Link building is still the long term strategy?

How can I gain links by creating infographics and/or memes?
It seems that both infographics and memes seem to be popular methods of creating good quality links at the moment, but how can you actually gain links by using these? When people share the graphics they will need to put an extra link in back to you and obviously most will be via social media so will not be worth that much to Google? Do I need to email these out to blogs etc?

Seeking feedback from the community here on a new project of mine
First off, thanks to what I can already tell is a great community here. I've never seen so much solid information in one place. I am working on a real estate website that brings a better experience to high end lake front home buyers in our area. The lakes name is Lake Keowee and it is in Seneca, SC. My url is keoweepremier.com Some of the top competitors seem to use link exchange options that don't seem relavent, yet they are ranking quite high. I am only a month or two in, and just looking for feedback from you all on tips for my path forward and approximately how long it will take to you some of my work pay off in the results. Still waiting for my dmoz listing to be approved for now, arghh. Thanks, Steven
