How does SEOMoz Code its Social Badge on Blog
-
On the blog section (and most other pages of the site) there is a social badge on the right hand side of the page where it shows the number of followers on Twitter, FB fans, etc.
How does SEOMoz pull those numbers? It seems like its not using the normal Javascritps supplied by FB and Twitter, Feedburner.
Thanks

Thank you guys. This was great. I'm definitely going to roll it out to all my sites.

We pull the numbers via javascript. If you check out posts.js when you are on the blog you can see where we make a call to Facebook and to Twitter to get those numbers. We also have hard coded the numbers at specific dates just in case it fails so there is a number present.
For the feedburner numbers we do those server side and ping the feedburner api and cache it. So there is one unlucky sole every hour that has to ping feedburner to recache the number.

Those numbers show up in the HTML, so they're likely calculated server-side in some way.
Feedburner (RSS feed provider), Twitter, and Facebook all have an API of some sort to grab the content from. Moz appears to use bronto.com to deliver their Top 10 email, so that's probably where they're getting the email subscriber count from.
Here's a tutorial to get you started on pulling content from Facebook/Twitter/Feedburner. Since it appears that your personal website uses Wordpress, I'll use that as a reference:

In 2013 is guest blogging a worthwhile activity?
Guest blogging is one of the activities I’ve never undertaken only because I went down the avenue of thinking if you go to the time and effort of producing great content why would you want it to be on someone else’s site when it could be on yours. The only reason I’m thinking about undertaking guest blogging now is because with social media becoming more prominent and indeed I found it to be very useful, I can see the logic that if you have got a niche of expertise to write about and you find good quality websites that will accept your guest blogs maybe that is a productive thing to do by attracting relevant traffic and also producing quality links to your website Have you got any experience of Guest blogging recently? Would you spend your precious time writing for your own website or spend some of that time guest blogging on good quality related websites? And if so what you see the main advantage is being?

Why isn't SEOMoz using Wistia's social sharing feautes?
I noticed that SEOMoz does not make use of Wistia's social sharing buttons such as a Facebook Like button. Is there any disadvantage to using the like button via Wistia rather than copy/pasting it in static HTML?

B2B social share
Hello, Social sharing is a positive signal for SEO.Google told on its blog, Googlebot take car of more than 200 social websites. Sometime Twitter and Facebook aren't good marketing places because business isn't B2C but B2B. So customers doesn't use them for job, but they use Linkedin, Viadeo, Xing, and maybe some other. I can't be present onto all social website, I've to choose the most relevant.

How to get most out of viral blog traffic?
Our website has a WordPress blog, hosted at website.com/blog. I've discovered that with some hard work and a bit of luck, I can create a blog posts that will go viral - they will get about 50k readers in 1-3 days (which is a LOT for our website), and 300-1000 tweets, 100-250 Facebook shares, and anywhere from 10 to 130~ G+1s. (Unfortunately, these are for the posts, not for our website.) The posts will also get some comments. And most importantly, a few links - sometimes from very reputable domains. However, I feel that I could be doing much more here. The links go directly to the blog post, and I'm not sure how much is that helping our website overall in regards to SEO. What actions can I encourage the readers to do, and how should I prioritize them? Some of the actions are: Sharing/liking, writing a comment, checking out our products, subscribing to our Facebook/Twitter/G+ profile, subscribing to our RSS. One another possible action/opportunity that I see and which could potentially pay off is to offer some kind of PDF report to be emailed, which would initiate an autoresponder sequence. Do you think that having a clear call to action in a blog post could reduce the sharing of it ? Is it possible to encourage whoever is writing about our blog posts to use a direct link to our website, instead of linking directly to the post? If yes, how? E.g. if I included a direct link to our website in the post itself, e.g. in the most important part of the post that gets quoted, it could work - unfortunately that's usually virtually impossible. Am I sitting on a gold mine here, and should do this as much as possible? Should I consider putting this content not just onto the blog, but on our website.com/something ? I'm actually not sure how that would help though, it would simply have a shorter URL. I've discovered that it doesn't matter where I post this content, if the presentation looks decent. So it doesn't have to be posted on website.com/blog. I can even post it on other domains - should I? And the most important question: How do I get the most out of this opportunity in SEO regards? Thanks for any ideas or insights!

Custom Social Media icons: Good or bad?
Hi guys, In our never-ending search for better SEO strategies and results, our journey has led us to question the idea of creating custom social media icons for our site. We are wondering if anyone has had experience, either negative or positive, by using these icons, or if there is no difference at all? I would like to make it clear that we are only thinking about customizing the icons that lead to our Facebook page, Twitter profile, YouTube channel, etc. NOT the like/share/tweet/etc buttons. We understand the negative effects in changing those icons, but are interested in knowing if creating general icons that match our design will be a good or bad thing. Any replies are appreciated, thanks!
