Is it worth me considering a reciprocal linking request to my authority site ?
-
My web site is www.swimmer.co.uk it sells waterproof mp3 players & is the authority site in its niche
I have no out going reciprocal links
I don't have advertising or encourage reciprocal linking as I thought it may devalue the sites quality & link juice
I have had a reciprocal link request from a swim wear based website called www.onlyswim.com that has a reciprocal linking sub-page with many varied links on it that are not just on the subject of swimming
I don't think I will get any direct traffic from this website so I was wondering if ts worth me agreeing to a reciprocal link page
I think we both have a PR of 2
**Any comments would be much appreciated **
In research to try & answer my own question I have just read this on wikipedia
"Reciprocal linking between websites is no longer an important part of the search engine optimization process.Google and other search engines now do not give credit to reciprocal linking as it does not indicate genuine link popularity."

Thanks to everyone for replying to this query
Having watched Rand's video & I think I'm getting the general impression with link building that if its ethical & natural congruent with ones topic it will tend to stand the test of time
In my case for me I think I will only reciprocal link with site requests that are more closely related to my niche topic 'waterproof mp3 players' & not just generalist swim related sites
thanks again for everybody's input

In general, reciprocal links are fine if there is a good reason for them to be there. Sometimes they help, sometimes they do nothing.
But get too many off-topic reciprocal links and you will risk a penalty.
Rand did a great video awhile back that discussed this topic: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-sitewide-reciprocal-and-directory-links
So, a couple reciprocal links on your site probably wont hurt you, but I'd be extra careful about soliciting these types of links from others. In the end, it's more rewarding and less risky to gain links the hard way.
Hope this helps! Best of luck with your SEO.

It is alright to have outbound links, just make sure that they are relevant to the page it is linking from. I believe I have read that relevant outbound links are actually good for SEO. (But don't go crazy).

If it were me I would stay away. I get these requests a lot. Do your research.

You seem to have answered this all by yourself already, reciprocal links and close to useless nowadays and since you do not think you will get any direct traffic from their site I wouldn't bother if I were you.

Is a little bit of interlinking between 2 sites beneficial? When is interlinking between enough friends' sites considered reciprocal? Thanks.

LInk Building Ideas for Large Site
Hi, I have a very large sized website of about 5 Million Pages. Earlier i used to rank very well with many naturally occurred links, But now, i lost my rankings with numerous Google updates. My content is user generated content and it wont be pure original as my users will post the same on other forums too. I all of my pages rank on #1 page for their keywords. Can anyone suggest me good link building strategy for larger websites as each url will have different keyword, i want all of my urls to be ranked well. Waiting for your replies.

My best links not showing in Open Site Explorer
Why is it that OSE does not display my strongest backlinks, including those from Wikipedia, a legitamite .edu, Squidoo, etc.? Some of those links have been live for a long time, and some (not all) are "dofollow". Impossible to do a thorough backlink analysis in this situation.

Is a no-follow link/sponsored link a good editorial link?
Ok maybe this is a dumb question. I really need some better, more quality backlinks pointing to my site. There is a site that has domain authority of 72, page rank 5 that is offering me a sponsored blog post. Do sponsored posts count as a good editorial link? Also what if they are no-follow (and how would I find out ahead of time), does that still give me link juice?

Over 47.000 inbound links from one site - can it hurt my rankings?
Im currently having some banner commercials on a relatively large Danish forum. I talked the forum owner into maing the banner "dofollow" so i could get the "juice" from the site, however im in doubt if this is good or bad for my SEO. Webmaster tools is telling me that i now have over 47.000 links from this forum. it seems like a Lot of links considering that i only have external links from about 5 other sites and the fact that my site is quite new. It seems like my site is not ranked very good yet(as mentioned in another question). I hope someone has some input 🙂 Best reguards

Links from .edu sites
I have a band website and was thinking of making some link bait pages specifically designed to get links from high page rank music colleges and then funnel that page rank to my landing pages on my band site. I am planning on finding out what these colleges link to and create great information on pages on my site that the high page rank college websites will link to thereby boosting my trust and authority. How much will the trust and authority boost my site in the search engines? Because the colleges will be music colleges they should be relevant to my band site. Does this sound like a good strategy? Take care, Ron
