This is a bit of a melon-twister - Anyone have any ideas?
-
As a novice I created my main site, (waspkilluk.co.uk) and it was geo-targeted for my local City (Bristol). As I got better I created sub-domains(nailsea.waspkilluk.co.uk) for the smaller towns. Now I am suffering because I need to create a sub-domain for BristoI, allowing the main site to be free from geo-targeting and thus rank more cleanly for specific topics e.g flea control, wasp control etc, etc.
My question is simply this - How do I avoid or limit damaging my existing rankings when I swap the site content over to the sub-domain and remove the key word Bristol from the root domains pages.
Not a short question, but any thoughts would be lovely to hear.

Hello Simon, Can you fill me in on the factors that have led to you wanting to make your main pages free of geo-targeting? I ask this because, if your business serves local clientele and has a physical address and local phone number, Google is going to see you as most relevant to your city of location, making Bristol (or wherever you are located) an integral part of the SEO/Local SEO of your key pages. Secondary cities (for example, cities where you go to serve beyond your city of location) can have their own pages, but these will be secondary keywords and not your core terms which would be your services + your city of location. Am I missing something? It would help to understand why you want your content to be separate from your company's locale.

Hi Simon,
Check ou this thread from January, http://www.seomoz.org/q/best-geotargeting-strategy-subdomains-or-subfolders-or-country-specific-domain
Theres some Good and Endorsed Answers in there.
Also check out Rand Fishkins post from late 2010, a little dated but the essence remains the same. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/ranking-for-keyword-cityname-in-multiple-geographies
Hopefully these should set you in the right path.
One additional point to note is to make sure you setup Google places correctly, I feel that will benefit your site greatly.
Cheers
Aran

That makes a lot of sense, but the big question now then is simply this - how can you overcome the issues of duplication when you are targeting specific areas for a given product or even sub-category?
e.g. pest control - flea control - flea control bristol
This makes the issue of targeting local areas with out being penalized, a tricky task.
Of course I could be over-complicating things.
Do you have any ideas on work-arounds for this kind of challenge?
-
I think you are likely to have duplicate content issues. All that subdomaining with the city name being the only change - probably not a good long term strategy for you.
First, you are diluting your authority on the various subjects. The search engines will not know which pages among the many near duplicates are the important pages on a subject.
Second, you are risking future penalties from search engines. They are constantly improving the algorithms to improve user experience, and all those subdomains with duplicate content do nothing for user experience, except to perhaps confuse them.

Base copy on 1 page, then adding a bit more for another page - potential duplicate content. What to do?
Hi all, We're creating a section for a client that is based on road trips - for example, New York to Toronto. We have a 3 day trip, a 5 day trip, a 7 day trip and a 10 day trip. The 3 day trip is the base, and then for the 5 day trip, we add another couple of stops, for the 7 day trip, we add a couple more stops and then for the 10 day trip, there might be two or three times the number of stops of the initial 3 day trip. However, the base content is similar - you start at New York, you finish in Toronto, you likely go through Niagara on all trips. It's not exact duplicate content, but it's similar content. I'm not sure how to look after it? The thoughts we have are:1) Use canonical tags 3,5,7 day trips to the 10 day trip.

2) It's not exactly duplicate content, so just go with the content as it is We don't want to get hit by any penalty for duplicate content so just want to work out what you guys think is the best way to go about this. Thanks in advance!0 -

Microsite campaign good or bad idea for SERP
I have a group of microsites for renters insurance, mostly geo long-tails. I wrote some content and have a GREAT back-end through Kemper. First 4 weeks they all did great. It looks like Panda went through on June 25 and by the 27'th they got moved totally out of the SERP. I have 67 microsites. All have unique contact (about us, why us, benefits...). I post to them often; not all of them but i put up about 10 new posts / week. Havent done much SEO, no link building or anything that could be spammy or causeing trouble. I have them in webmaster tools and no messages about problems. If i've been penalized or if something is seriously wrong i'd like to know. I know that Google can see 67 websites all on 1 ip but i'm not trying to fool or trick Gbot so not interested in using proxies or specialty hosts with many ip's.If there is no critical flaw, next i'm just going to continue writing content, buy traffic, and build quality backlinks. Your comments are appreciated. Not one site is in top 1000 as far as i can see, and all were in top 30 by week 4. Banned on week 5, today is week 12.http://onlinerentersinsurance.orgIf you want to see the other 66, click on the 'renters insurance' link on the right. Its a random link through the micronetwork.

Does anyone know the rules or methods for improving SEO of forums?
After speaking with the Yoast team, they explained that their product cannot support SEO for forums as forum support within Wordpress comes via a plugin and their Wordpress SEO by Yoast plugin cannot support another program. They said that doing SEO on a forum is really hard. I believe it. The tiered hierarchy of forums would seem to make it difficult. Should I use a direct such as NOINDEX, FOLLOW for the higher level elements of the forum and index just the topic? I'm really at a loss here. My website is http://www.heartspm.com and my forum can be seen on the left menu. Press "Ask A Question." Thanks in advance. Gerry

Link Building Ideas for a health site
Hi, I am trying to rank a health related website. This is the url: www.ridpiles.com Domain age is 1 year 6 months. Done Directory submissions Blog Comments + Forum posts Done Social Bookmarks Article submissions (Not much) I have done competitor analysis. All of my competitors are just had links from directories and some link exchanges. They got links from quality sites like Yahoo dir. I know my site is far better than my competitors and has 100% unique content. I have submitted to yahoo directory inclusion, but still no luck i hadn't accepted into it. I am planning to go for a sponsered review but dont know, weather the link will be valuable for that much of money. I was left with Guest Blogging. I see this is the only option for me to build links. But i have a very tough competiton, i must compete with most reputed sites like webmd.com etc, i need to get more good links. But i cant get what other ways to get authoritative links. If Guest blogging is the only option for me, how many posts do i need to do daily? And can someone suggest me good Guest blogging sites? Anyhelp would be appreciated.

Any idea why I can't add a Panoramio image link to my Google Places page?
Hey guys & gals! Last week, I watched one of the Pro Webinars on here related to Google Places. Since then, I have begun to help one of my friends with his GP page to get my feet wet. One of the tips from the webinar was to geotag images in Panoramio to use for your images on the Places page. However, when I try to do this, I just get an error that says they can't upload it at this time. I tried searching online for answers, but the G support pages that I have found where someone asks the same question, there is no resolution. Can anyone help? PS - I would prefer not to post publicly the business name, URL, etc. So, if that info is needed, I can PM. Thanks a lot!
